I'm thinking about putting together a CD for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day. I have a few songs that are kind of "our songs", but I also wanted to put some really cheesy songs on it too.

Any suggestions?

Babe, I got you babe.

The Gonzo and Lily Tomlin version from SNL if you can find it.

The Rose by Bette Midler.

I don't know how they got the Napoleon Dynamite guy to do that. I was in awe.

Also, "it's all coming back to me now" by what'ser face. Celine Dion.

Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole's medley of "What a Wonderful World" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is great. Not cheesy, but good for a mix.

I'm not sure if they qualify as cheesy, but here are a few.

Bryan Adams: (Everything I Do) I Do It For You
Elton John: Your Song
Etta James: At Last
Heatwave: Always and Forever
Des'Ree: Kissing You

"Love is a river
running soul deep ..."

The Bee Gees version of "Soul Deep."

Posted by Ginol_Enam (Member # 7070) on :

Its Your Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill is kind of cheesy.

Could You, Would You, Ain't You Gonna, If I Asked You Would You Wanna Be My Baby Tonight by John Michael Montgomery is really cheesey (probabaly only called Be My Baby Tonight, but whatever).

Hmm... S'all..

"Like walking in the rain and the snow
When there's nowhere to go
And you're feelin' like a part of you is dying
And you're looking for the answer in her eyes.
You think you're gonna break up
Then she says she wants to make up"

10cc's "The Things We Do For Love"

Endless love.

I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing is a passable power ballad.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

And along those lines, these classics from Olivia Newton-John:

"I Honestly Love You"

and

"Just call me angel
of the morning, angel
Just touch my cheek
before you leave me,
baby..."

[Edit: not power ballads, more a'la "Endless Love." And twinky, you shouldn't be listening to cheesy love songs. You should be doing something nice and healthy for a young man, like eating graham crackers. And hiking up mountains.]

500 Miles by the Proclaimers.

I love it, but it is awfully cheesy.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
You'd be like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much... [Big Grin]

Also, "Can't Help Falling in Love," by Elvis.

Hmmm.... those were both on a Valentine's album I made last year...

Ben Folds' "The Luckiest" is an awesome love song. One of my favourites.

I don’t get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

...makes an interesting contrast with what I'm listening to now ("Passive," A Perfect Circle). Heh.

Posted by Uhleeuh (Member # 6803) on :

Jackie Wilson: Higher and higher

It always reminds me of Ghostbusters. [Big Grin]

The Flamingos: I Only Have Eyes For You
Lifehouse: Everything

"Magic" (Ben Folds again, but this time Ben Folds Five)... and also, "Galapagos," by the Smashing Pumpkins. Though really, the former is marginally cheesy while the latter is just plain good.

Edit: CT, I'm going back to NZ soon and will be doing plenty of hiking. Does that make you feel better? [Smile]

Cheesy, not ear-rendingly horrible. [Wink]

Dreamweaver

Doesn't get much cheesier than that. I think we've got that one on vinyl at home...

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

"You Light up My Life"

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Heh heh, that reminds me of an awesome Philosopher Kings song, "You Stepped on My Life." [Big Grin] So very good. I can hear the horns in my head now...

Okay, okay, most of my posts haven't been terribly topical. Sorry.

These all came from a disc a former flame gave me, I don't have artist info on most but I'm pretty sure they're all country or country-rock cause that's what he likes:

God Must Have Spent a Little More Time (Alabama and NSync)
Feels So Right
I'll Go On Loving You
There Is Love (Peter Paul & Mary)

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

twinky, don't forget the graham crackers. They encourage personal purity. *virtuous look

"Dreamweaver" was an awesome call, but I think Annie's "You Light Up My Life" knocked the last ball out of the park.

I'm not sure of "cheesy", but here you go : wicked game, from Chris Isaac.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

OK, Dreamweaver wins the cheasiest award. I don't know how I forgot it, but when Mike Meyers decides to use a song as the epitome of cheesy love, you've got good authority.

In Your Eyes

*Presenting CD on his driveway with boom box optional

That's a song about being dumped. Why John Hughes thought it was romantic I'll never understand.

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

There is no contest. This cheesy offering still makes me run and hide:

Muskrat, muskrat candlelight
Doin' the town and doin' it right
In the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'

Muskrat Susie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug out in muskrat land
And they shimmy
And Sammy's so skinny

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Oh, Punwit. You win. Ew. Ew. Ew. Now I not only have the song in my head, but a vision of The Captain and Tenille as well.

Posted by aspectre (Member # 2222) on :

Until now, I had never even thought of the possiblity that Dreamweaver might be a love song. And I still don't see how the either the lyrics or the music would conjure up that image.

Ever wonder what triggered the ever declining birthrate amongst American-born women?

It's not quite as bad as Muskrat Love, but what about:

My Heart Will Go On

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Isn't that Celine Dion? Cuz any song she sings turns my stomach. I am not even sure why. I have a visceral reaction to her.

Posted by amira tharani (Member # 182) on :

Not that cheesy, but Alanis Morrissette's "Head over Feet" is one of my favourites.
David Gray "This year's love" or "Please Forgive Me" are both pretty cheesy (but I like them anyway).
Oh, and anything by John Denver has just got to be cheesy (but I like many of his songs anyway, so there [Razz] )

Love (doo doot doot)
Love will keep us together
In all kinds of (something) weather

That's all I know. And it's bad enough.

How about something by Weird Al??

(just kidding)

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Ketchupqueen, that's another Captain and Tenille song. We could pretty much just list all of their songs and be pretty damn sure that they would qualify for cheesy. Here's another by C. and T.:

Do that to me one more time
Once is never enough with a man like you
Do that to me one more time
I can never get enough of a man like you
Whoa-oh-oh, kiss me like you just did
Oh, baby, do that to me once again

Why do birds suddenly appear,
Everytime you are near?
Just like me, they want to be
Close to you.

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true!
So they sprinkled goldust in your hair
And starlight to go in your eyes of blue!

And thats why
All the girls in town
follow you when your around.
Just like me
They want to be
Close to you.

Laaaaaaa ah ah ah aaaaaaaah
Close to you.

OK, the cheesiest love song, literally, is from Jimmy Buffet:

"Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin’ weight without speed, eatin’ sunflower seeds
Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays

But at night I’d had these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
Not too particular not too precise (paradise)
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise"

"Cheeseburger in Paradise"

Behold the power of cheese.

Captain & Tenille are great! They do a disco fantasy version of "Happy Together" complete with stampeding horse effects.

Actually, I once made a CD of cover versions of "Happy Together." I had a punk version, a Mel Torme lounge version, an instrumental bluegrass rendition, a jazz version, reggae, acapella, and of course Captain & Tenille. My roommates thought I was off my rocker. I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever done.

Oh yeah, also add "Happy Together" by the Turtles.

What about "My Cheeseburger" from Veggie Tales? I love that song. [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Oh, and you need "Baby Baby" by Amy Grant and "Love is a Wonderful Thing" by Michael Bolton. Actually, how about Michael Bolton's entire catalog?

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

While I have to agree that Muskrat Love is hands down the cheesiest, since you are making a compilation CD, you could also add:

Sugar, Sugar by The Archies

Posted by Jim-Me (Member # 6426) on :

"Always" by Atlantic Starr.

one 8 bar drum loop... for always

(we need a puking smiley)

How about the one that goes....
"Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful. Do Do Do doooo....."
or "Havin' my baby"....but only in the right circumstances! [Big Grin] [Wink] [Razz]

How about something by Weird Al??
I don't think he has any good love songs -- however, he has a lot of great un-love songs, like this:

quote:
That's right (that's right) you ain't gonna see me cryin'
I'm glad (I'm glad) that you found somebody new
'Cause I'd rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass
Than spend one more minute with you

I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps...
------------
I'd rather have my blood sucked out by leeches (leeches)
Shove an icepick under a toenail or two
I'd rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue
Than spend one more minute with you

Or this:
quote:

Since you've been gone
Well, I feel like I've been chewing on tinfoil
Since you've been gone
It's like I got a great big mouthful of cod liver oil
Oh well, I'm feelin like I stuck my hand
Inside a blender and turned it on
You know, I've been in a buttload of pain
Since you've been gone

(Since you've been gone)
I couldn't feel any worse if you dropped
A two-ton bowling ball on my toes
(Since you've been gone)
It couldn't hurt any more if you shoved
A red-hot cactus up my nose

Since you've been gone
Well, it feels like I'm getting tetanus shots every day
Since you've been gone
It's like I've got an ice cream headache that won't go away
Ever since that day you left me
I've been so miserable, my dear
I feel almost as bad as I did
When you were still hee-eee-eere
