The d*mn stuff is killing me. It makes me crabby. I am gaining more than I should, from a food I don't need. PLus the whole thrush thing. White sugar is about the only refined carb I eat, but this winter I eat chocolate every day (Brian found a great new brownie recipe...my goodness),plus my afternoon cuppa, which I stir about two spoonfuls of sugar into. Oh, and btw, I do not, ever, consume artificial sweeteners.

It will take awhile for sugar to get out of your system, and you will feel horrible during that time.

When my grandma did some alternative-type treatments for her health when she had cancer, one step was to eliminate ALL refined sugars. She actually had the shakes and was ill for days while her system adjusted to that.

(Same thing happened to me when I once thought of turning LDS, and went off all my coffee, hot cocoa and everything cold turkey. I thought I was going to die...)

I thought that was gonna be a Guess Who thread.

Sugar... Well, I hate (HATE) arsepartame. I probably eat waaay too much refined sugar. In my baking, if nothing else. Either that, or in juice concentrates.

Way to go, dpr. It can be done. I've heard detox is about 5 days. I've never had a bad detox experience, though I still get cravings with PMS.

This last month there was a bowl of cookie dough in the fridge and I'd find myself looking at it a little longer than I otherwise would.

I've pulled out most refined sugar from my diet, too. Like you, I refuse to use artificial sweetner replacements, except I did try powdered organic stevia root from the local Whole Foods Market. There is a long history of use in Europe, but I found the taste a little off. Better for me to do the cold turkey thing.

Good luck!

I had to change the teas I drank for awhile in order to tolerate the unsweetened aspect. Mint (herbal) and Twinings Lady Grey (black) both taste naturally sweet to me.

Good luck! Sugar is not my thing, really. What I need to and can't give up is salt.

"I ain't gonna hurt nobody,
I ain't gonna cause a scene,
I just need to admit that I want sugar in my tea,
Hear me? Hear me? I want sugar in my tea"

I was listening to those lines when I read the thread title. It was sort of creepy.

Actually, I have taken the fact that that song is one the radio every time I'm in the car as a "sign". (mostly kidding)

CT, I don't like stevia either. I will check out the Lady Grey..mmmmm. Right now I'm making a big pitcher of raspberry leaf, strawberry leaf, and lemon balm tea with some fruit in it.

The chocolate, though, is a different matter.

Lady Grey is really good. A little lighter on the bergamot and with added elements of citrus. For the longest time, it was the only tea that didn't automatically have me reaching for the sugarpot. Mmmm, indeed.

Yours sounds most nummy, too. [Smile]

I don't use artificial sweetners but I've heard some people rave about Spenda, which apparently is like neutered sugar or something. [Big Grin]

Can you still use honey?
Tea is better without sugar anyway. Bleck. Sugar in tea... It's all about milk.

DPR,
If you are really "jonesin'" for something sweet, try Creamsavers. They always hit the spot for me, and they last a while.

I can't imagine my life without sugar. I cook with it, I put it in drinks, I eat it with a spoon. Yum. [Evil Laugh]

PSI, I like Splenda and have cooked with it. (You apparently aren't supposed to cook wih the other sugar substitutes.) Cooked, it tastes just like sugar, though it doesn't have the same consistency.

My guilty pleasure is cinammon toast for breakfast. To make it a little less guilty, I only do it on 100% stone ground whole wheat (without high fructose corn syrup). I used to make it with Splenda, but...well, honestly, I don't drink coffee, so the sugar kick in the morning was my breakfast boost. So I went back to using regular sugar.

*reads thread while eating some milk chocolate Bordeaux*

I'd recommend taking the sugar and the chocolate separated, but if you're still having coffee maybe that can serve as a chocolate methadone for you.

You can bake some things with Splenda, and it works well. For other things there is a baking mix of Splenda and sugar, less than half the arbs, for those must-have-sugar items.

I have had it, and let me tell you I was really skeptical, but it reallys is very good....I couldn't taste a difference.

Splenda is the only sugar substitute that I can tolerate Try dark chocolate in small bites.

Vitamin B complex is wonderful for an energy boost, and a friend of mine just recommended grapefruit as a natural energy booster as well.

As for cravings -- try to take just a small piece and put it back in the cupboard. I have to do this with many of my favorite foods because there is definitely the tendency to go back and have one more nibble until it is gone.

I am proud to say, though, that there is still a half eaten container of cheese curds in my fridge from two days ago. [Smile] Some progress.

Cheese curds! Did they squeak?

Well, I did not put sugar in my tea yesterday [Smile]

Did put maple syrup on my pancakes this AM [Roll Eyes]

I am unsure about Splenda. I just find myself wondering what they will tell us in 10 years it causes?

But small amount of dark chocolate is a good idea. My favorite bar (Terra Nostra Organic Dark Truffle) can be broken into 9 (I think) squares.

Oh, and I am on a B complex in addition to my regular multi, for the seasonal depression.

dpr, should you want some tea samples, just email me your address. I can send a few bags of everything I can tolerate without sugar. [Smile]

Do you like Irish Breakfast? [Big Grin]

I have heard that some people lack certain taste buds for “bitter” flavors, which allows them to not notice the difference between Splenda and sugar. To me, Splenda (even cooked) has a nasty, horrible, hideous aftertaste. I mean, spit it out, wipe off my tongue with a napkin and wash my mouth out hideous. But Bob can’t taste any aftertaste at all.

dkw, it tastes like that to me, too! It's like eating burnt plastic.

I also smell arsenic.

I do, I do!

I can taste Splenda, too. [Razz]

How is it? I adore Earl Grey and English Breakfast but it has to be loose twinings tea for some reason...
Jasmine tea is not so bad, but I made it too strong so I put it in the bathtub.
I haven't tried splenda, but I think I should cut down on sugar even though it tastes really good but I am wary of fake sugar.

This is the hardest thing ever. I'm in the midst of TRYING to cut out the sugar and I just don't know if I can do it. [Frown] I know it'll help me a lot...but that knowledge just doesn't seem to be enough to keep me 'clean and sober' from the stuff.

Do you guys do the squares of dark chocolate just to give you your chocolate fix without all the sugar? I do find that chocolate is the most difficult thing to kick. Doesn't it have addictive ingredients in it besides sugar? It must, and I'm addicted. For real.

I broke my 2 day clean streak with semi-sweet chocolate chips last night. *bangs head on desk*
