I don't really know, but my Korean roommates cooked and ate it tonight. I almost threw up from the smell.

Sounds mighty tasty. Dried fish/squid/eel toasted over an open flame and kimchee* would be my first guess.
* brined cabbage fermented with lots of hot chile and lots of garlic

The dead fish is probably dead fish. I'd guess that what you're calling an "unwashed gym shorts" smell is some sort of fermented cabbage.

Mmmm.... Kim Chee. *drools*
I had a friend who went on a mission to Korea, and he got me hooked on the stuff. It's an acquired taste, but delicious.

Agreed, sarcasticmuppet. In fact, that's how I feel about kim chee, too. Fresh, it's wonderful. Canned, I tend to puke.

Kimchi I can handle. This stuff...*cringe* It left me and my other american roommate struggling for ways to escape the stench. I think it was squid or something like that.

A college friend of mine had a Korean room-mate. One day while walking on the campus they came upon a (perfecly healthy) black Labrador.
"Umm!" his Korean friend responded, "Black dog...good food!"
He was kidding, of course. We hope.

I asked them. Freeze Dried Squid...and they have more
