........the mindset of people who would decide on some mass suicide pact..

Valentine's Mass Suicide Pact Foiled

I mean -- why would anyone agree with a bunch of people over the internet to all commit suicide together? How would you know it wasn't all just a hoax? What would it prove? Why would people do this?

I just don't understand..............

(I love Hatrackers, but if any of you ever try to talk me into committing suicide -- you can forget it!)

I am guessing they had to be suicidal in the first place. That's very very odd.

Internet suicide clubs and pacts are common enough in Japan to be viewed by the government as a serious problem.

It's appearance in the US is just another case of monkey see, monkey do.

...good... question, that.

Well, I can't remember which country it is, but the teenage population views suicide as something cool to do. I don't see the point, they're going to be dead, how will they live in the glory of their coolness? I'll just never understand people.

Suicide is complex. I've never felt a serious urge to do it, to tell the truth, not even an inkling, but in a way, I think it's because I'm too callous. Some people want to die doing something cool. Some people are sensitive to the evil in the world and just want to end it. Think about it, how many Christians would kill themselves if they didn't believe that Jesus wants them to live and if they just keep making it one more day, they'll get to go to the kingdom of heaven? How many people would rather kill themselves than try to make sense of this difficult world? It's almost like a severe form of agoraphobia. I imagine some people in the armed forces are similarly blessed. Hell, if you are taking those 20,000 dollars a month jobs driving trucks in Iraq, there is a little bit of me that thinks they are gambling their life against a big payoff.

If you don't have busy work and you are faced with the reality and the inevitability of your own death, suicide is at least a way to take control over it. I'm just riffing, but there are real reasons.
