[Mad] [Mad] [Mad] [Mad]

I'm going to go get my first allergy shots this morning. Yes, that's plural, 'cause I'm allergic to too many things for them to put them all in one mixture, so I have to get two. One in each arm.

It's dkw's fault. I was happily ignoring the fact that the allergy clinic hadn't called me back after my disaster of a test and scheduled the shots, and she had to go and get all rational over the weekend and prod me into calling them. Now they're going to inject things that my body does not like into said body. What kind of an idiot lets people do that to them?

I'm probably going to have to pay them for the honor, too. Now that's just wack.

And then, NEXT week, I get to go back and they will do it AGAIN. Every week for 3 - 5 years. This is completely insane.

And it's snowing.

So there.

Note:

In the unlikely but very real possibility that I do in fact die from this: dkw, it's not really your fault. I went into the tests fully intending to have the shots if they thought it could help me, and I told the nurse the next day, with it fresh in my mind, to go ahead and mix it up. You merely prodded me from my normal state of procrastination, and should not take any blame on yourself. Sorry in advance for ditching the wedding, please don't scale it down. Dance for me.

Mom, you also are not allowed to feel any guilt, even though it was your nagging that pushed me over the edge to actually make the appointment. I'm a big girl and all that drek, I wouldn't have done it if I didn't actually want to. Offer Claudia first refusal at my shoes, we're the same size. [Smile]

If I make it to work alive, I'm deleting this post.

Now back to your normally scheduled grumpiness.

Don't stress about it, the shots will really help in the long run, and because of them you will be safer in the long run.

What are you allergic to? Wasn't there a thread about that once?

If she's like me they won't hurt at all, but over the next few hours a hard knot will slowly develop under the skin of her arm until it's the size of a softball and radiating heat like a small sun.

Stupid needles with their stupid contents that cause you to not have stupid allergies.

Have you snapped at someone irrationally yet? How about leaning on the horn in response to another vehicles minor traffic snafu? If not, you must do so immediately.

My dad gave me my allergy shots at home. He was always terrified something would happen and we kept epinphrine in the fridge in case something happened but nothing ever did. I recall being a bit disappointed. Getting the shot was so ...boring.

I remember when I discovered that the more I moved the arm around after the shot the less it hurt. The first few times I would favor the arm and let it hang limp and then it would hurt all day long.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I really need to do this. Allergists are so hard to get appointments with, though, and I never think of it when I have time.

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

If your arm starts to be hot and to hurt, put some alcohol on a compress on it, it will ease the pain and make your arm colder. It works on Hubby, at last. Of course you need to put some plastc sheet on it if you don't want to be drunk from the smell of it.

I3: Yes, I could die. Haven't you been paying attention?

Palimpsest: That is indeed a great start at Hatrack.

IdI: Yes, I've snapped irrationally at all of Hatrack, haven't you noticed? But I can't lean on the horn, I don't have one. It's very handy, as whenever I'm mad in traffic I pound on the middle of my steering wheel, where it's supposed to be, and get to feel better without contributing to road rage. It's also illegal, but meh. How are they gonna catch me?

KrabbyPatty: You're not supposed to tell them that! I'm still grumpy, darn it. I have to host a recognition luncheon this afternoon and I hate doing that, and it's tournament time so my downtown is stuffed with high school kids and and parents. I probably won't leave the building on a Thursday or Friday for the rest of Spring, except I have to today to go to the stupid lunch.

Theca: Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to move my arms. So far they just itch, no softball sized lump yet.

My friend went through a year or more of allergy shots so he wouldn't be so allergic to his new wife's cats. I always thought that if we was that allergic, she should get rid of the cats, but he was really whipped...uhm, in love with her, so he got the shots.

Anna: That method would, of course, only work if you weren't allergic to alcohol...

[Blushing] I had a hard time keeping everyone at the hospital reminded of that when I had the baby. Apparently, "it's like being allergic to water" and "it never happens". [Grumble]

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

The first few shots don't hurt. They're giving you a very watered down version of the serum to get your body used to it. So enjoy it while it lasts =)

Later though your arm DOES swell. And by the time the swelling goes down it's time for another shot. I took them for a year when I was 12ish and we (My mom and I) decided eventually that the cure was worse than the disease.

Now I live in a dryer climate and only suffer a coupla times a year, or if I go back to Arkansas. My teen years though... I can't help but wonder if they would have been better if I had just suffered through the shots.

An excellent question. Whoever it was, I'm sure I didn't do enough to make it worth this, and if I ever figure it out I intend to make up the difference.

Theoretically after they pump me full of stuff I'm allergic to for long enough my body will get used to it and won't notice it in day-to-day life. But I probably won't notice any improvement for 6 months to a year.

Hey, I'm sorry I'm not being negative enough, but it's early.

It really sucks, having to get 5 years of allergy shots. Question: what happens should you want to go on vacation or out of town or something? Carry the shots with you and get a doc wherever you are do them for you? My brother had to do that. Took a cooler bag filled iwth ice and the serum with him wherever he went. But he only had to get shots for close to a year.

quids and rivka, you're so sweet! [Mad] I think if I go on vacation I just kinda adjust the shots around it, get one before I leave and one when I get back. I don't usually go on vacation for longer than a week - 10 days. Although I suppose I might sometime in the next five years. If so, I think we just kinda drop back a little in the shot "intensity" and work back up. [Mad] [Mad]

Hobbes and I were wondering...(ok, ok, I was wondering and he told me he had no idea), if you're allergic (as I am) to house cats, would you also be allergic to big cats, like lions, tigers, pumsa, cougars, etc?

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

Lisha, I'm allergic to house cats. By experience, I know that I'm also allergic to the bigger cats, only worse. Years ago, I worked for a small UHF station. We had a late night talk show. One night, the guests were from a circus that had come to town. They brought their black panther. It was a small studio and I was running cameras.

I thought I was going to die in about 3 minutes of being in close proximity to the cat. It was by far the worst allergic reaction I've ever had.

Posted by Lisha-princess (Member # 6966) on :

Wow, that's scary. I guess it stands to reason that if the little ones get to you, the bigger ones would be worse. I wasn't sure if the dander would be the same or not though.

And quids, it's going alright, I guess. I'm still at a low enough dose that I just get itchy for awhile... the itchy eyes are the worst. The last time I went in the shots really hurt, but I think that's more what nurse is giving them than anything else. Oh, and I got a little swelling last time, but nothing like dkw talks about with her arm swelling to the size of a softball and radiating heat. Oh, and I moved up from 1:1,000,000 to 1:100,000 two shots ago. So I guess that's progress. I still haven't noticed any difference as far as my actual allergies are concerned, but they said that would take awhile.

I hope Laurie's back. I like her best. She's the nurse who was there when I had my test.

The last one I saw twice. The one before that, once. The one before that, who was my favorite, twice.

They keep leaving.

I call up for an appointment and get told they've left the practice. The first two, actually, I got nice letters from telling me they were leaving, one to spend more time with her family, I don't remember what the other one said. But still, it was considerate.

It makes me wonder if turnover at my clinic is unusually high or what. But it bugs me.

Anyway, the point is that I'm probably going to be stuck with needles at two different places this morning, and I'm less than thrilled about it.

Well, maybe you wouldn't induce high turnover in all the establishments you frequent if you weren't oozing so much negativity!

I'm sorry about the doctor leaving (again), ElJay. Mine did that last year, and it messed up all sorts of things.

Stupid people driving overly-beefed Jeeps (I mean honestly, who needs to be driving a Jeep with a pusher bar on it in town) smashing into people. [Mad]

Okay, I'm officially having my first site specific reaction to the shots. Before I just had general itchiness. Today the itching has been much worse, so I took off my sweater and checked. Both arms are swollen, red, and very warm at the injection site. Tender to the touch, too. And I checked at lunch, and that combined with the fact that I'm getting a lovely bruise where they drew blood made me a bit nausious. I'm such a wuss.

In a way, I'm glad I'm finally reacting, because it means I'm up to a level where the shots are engaging my immune system. But it's not exactly pleasant.

[Mad]

Sorry about your accident, ludosti. That bites.

It does bite. My poor husband, in our newer, nicer, paid-off, good gas mileage fun to drive car was smashed today. I wish it had been me in my old pickup (that's been giving me fits lately and I want to replace anyway). Smashy, smashy At least the lady was insured and her insurance company seems to be being reasonable thus far (adjuster will be out today or tomorrow to look at it and we can get quotes from 2 different shops).

I'm glad your shots are at the point where you will hopefully benefit from them, but reacting does suck.

Good Lord. That will be expensive to fix, won't it? It looks like they'll have to replace about 1/2 of the exterior of the car.

How hard was he hit? Do you think it bent the frame? That sucks.

ElJay, what are you trying to get over being allergic to, again? And why? I'm allergic to September. But I'm not sure it would be worth what you're going through.

Can you take benedryl or anything? I'd think they wouldn't want you to take allergy meds. [Wink]

Yeah, we're both pretty worried about that ripple appearing under the window. It does not bode well. Since it's a little unibody car, they could possibly correct it on a frame stretcher thingy, but we won't know for sure until a shop looks at it. We'll be seeing about getting quotes as soon as we can.

He said he was hit "pretty hard", though what that means in terms of speed I'm not sure (he stopped and the Jeep accelerated into the back of him - I'd imagine that she was going 30+).

I'm hoping it's not as bad as I fear it may be, because I don't know that we want to go car shopping this weekend (with a husband that works nights on the weekend that'd be entertaining). We'd wanted to replace my truck this year, not his car. We were going to drive it forever. [Frown]

I'm not sure if I'd rather go car shopping or have the frame straightened. Do you know the Blue Book value of your car? And do you know at what percent Arizona requires the car to be totaled? (Some states have different percentages. Like if the repairs were going to cost 6,000 and the car is worth 10,000, some states would let them repair it, others require totaling the car.)

I don't like the idea of straightening a bent frame. Have they gotten better at it? For me, it just seems like the car is weaker if there's another accident. And it seems like they never do it right and there is always a window that leaks. But, trying to find a car as well cared for as the old one with the pittance they are willing to give you is impossible, too.

It's worth about 9-10k (looking at KBB and Edmunds). I'm not sure what the % is to total it. I'm hoping that the frame won't have been badly damaged, but we won't know till taking it in. The adjuster is supposed to come out today or tomorrow to look at it and they want us to get 2 quotes before they start work (which I'll try to do either today or tomorrow, depending on when the adjuster comes). *sigh*

Here's the original thread, Kayla, the whole list of allergies is about half-way down the page. I'm not gonna read it, I try not to think about it.

I can't take any sort of medication the day of the shots because it would disguise the reaction, and they have to know how strong the reaction is so they know if they should up the dose the enxt week or not.

As for why, the answer seems to be 'cause dkw and Mom guilted me into it. I'm having a hard time coming up with anything else at the moment. [Wink] Ooops, I mean [Mad]

So, I'm assuming that you rescheduled the other doctor that you had to miss that day. How'd that go?

I don't have cancer. So it went pretty well.

O_o Well, that's good.

[Mad] I thought so.

The other appointment was for a biopsy. Not a huge deal, just a little worrying. But everything's fine.

ludosti, sorry bout the accident.

If it helps any, I've seen (and in fact been in) much worse. My most recent incident, I was a passenger in a rental van with my mother, and a hotshot Mexicano teenager in a lowryder Olds decided to convert a marked turn lane into a high-speed bypass-the-red-light lane - right into the front door where I was sitting. We were hit hard enough where Mom was thrown into my lap. The guy left skidmarks long enough and dark enough that the police estimate he was doing about 60 in a 30 zone and in a turn lane designed to push people into the grocery store that was our intended destination. Yet the arbitration panel decided that it was Mom's fault for turning left across two lanes of fully stopped traffic and not assuming that a little <bleep> playing showoff to his girlfriend would come blasting out of practically nowhere.

My mother is blind. One of her more scatterbrained friends was driving her home Tuesday and accidentally had her get out of the car right into a big fire ant hill. She didn't come over very quickly to help either. [Mad] She has about 15 bites on one foot and apparently it is hugely red and swollen. Now she's on oral steroids which isn't good for her glaucoma. O_o Wow Goody! I hope everyone was ok. I, too, know the [Mad] of "blame the person turning left" even if an airplane falls out of the sky.

[Mad] Theca, that should constitute criminal neglect. It's unfortunate that her ability to see is in no way connected to her ability to think....

I got off lucky, I *just* smashed my right wrist against the door and got bounced around, a bit of whiplash and aggravated my carpal tunnel. Mom had whiplash, a bruised rib, and they had to do a bunch of Doppler tests on her to make sure that there wasn't anything going on with her circulatory system, especially in her arms where she's prone to clotting (or catching the clots, whichever)

The hotshot driving scraped his cheek. The girl he was hotrodding for bashed against the windshield and had a nasty bruise. The two year old in the back seat of the Olds had a broken leg from being tossed out of his seat (I seriously doubt he was buckled in properly) and then landed on his leg funny from the rebound.
