I'm entering new territory here. I mean, my hair has been this long before, but it has been a very long while. It's long enough to get pinched in my arm pits when I work out, and long enough to get zipped in my jackets or for my husband to roll over on it in bed.

It keeps getting pulled. I can't really reach the ends in the back to style it. I like it long, and gosh knows Ron does. I like to use hair sticks and do the French Twists and all that mess, but I have questions.

I still want to grow it, but should I have it trimmed? How often, since I do still want it longer (just to see how long I can stand it)?
Should I treat the ends with something to reduce splits and breakage?

I'm getting my first stray grey hairs, does that make me too old for the long hair look? I'm not going to pluck/color them - I earned every one, let me tell you!

Should I do a loose braid at night to keep down the snarles? I don't have a big problem with tangles, but I wonder if it's bad for my hair to sleep with it down. Ron likes it down, but it sometimes ends up under him and being awakened by a hard yank to the hair is not really my idea of fun.

Lovely Ladies of Hatrack, Adivise Me!

I have very long hair, and the only problems I really have are with it clogging up the bathroom drain! [Big Grin]

Do you pull it back and tie it for workouts? I often braid mine at night, especially during the summer, just for coolness -- get it up off my neck makes for less sweat.

Oh - and I MUST comment on this:
quote:

I'm beginning to get a few white hairs (redheads usually go white instead of grey). So I said to my teenage kids "guess when it all goes white I will have to get it cut into the "old ladies" cut. And my kids had an absolute FIT!
"You will NOT cut your hair mom!
You've always had long hair!
It is okay to have long hair that is white!" etc. etc.

So I guess it must be okay [Wink]

I usually braid it or something, unless I have a breakout and want to hide (gray hair and pimples, I am so lucky).

I'll comment more later on the rest (my hair is only 3-4 inches past my shoulders right now, but it's been to my waist before), but I have to say that I love it when gray (and white) haired ladies have long hair. To me, it's a sign of a free spirit. My friend Amy says, "Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional."

I would need some advice too. My hair are long, but for years I did cut the little locks around my face, because, well, I liked it. Then I decided to let them grow and attach them with the other hair whan they are long enough, but it seems to take sooo much time and now they are always annoying me in my face, I wonder if I should cut them again.

I sometimes roll over on my own hair and pull it. What I usually do if it's not braided is to grab it and twist it up on top of my head (while laying down, so it's really beside rather than on top) and just leave it there without fastening it. It comes untwisted, but it normally stays out of the way for the rest of the night.

Be patient Anna. I just went through that stage and it took forever to grow my bangs back out to the length of my other hair so they could be tied back, but after almost two years, it is doable. But it is an annoying process.

I often wear my hair "up" -- meaning pull it back or braid up and then clip it up in a bun. That is great for workouts. Or for windy days.

I've had long hair pretty much my entire life, with varying degrees of care for it, so I'll share what I've gotten out of the experiences thus far:

quote:
I still want to grow it, but should I have it trimmed? How often, since I do still want it longer (just to see how long I can stand it)?
Absolutely! This is very nearly a must-do. When hair is that long, 3 or 4 inches (the normal amount to clip to make it look good again) is barely noticeable, and it'll do wonders for styling and the general look. As for how often... I normally go a bit longer between trims, especially since they're more functional than cosmetic. I'll give it anywhere from 3 months to a year, but I'm not always the best at keeping up my hair

quote:
Should I do a loose braid at night to keep down the snarles?
If your hair is pretty curly, then this wouldn't be a terrible idea. My hair is wavy-curly and I don't braid it, so I sometimes have troubles brushing it in the morning. Maybe I'll try it, but if you don't have problems, don't worry about it.

My hair currently reaches to my low back, as a point of reference. At its longest, it was slightly past my bum, but I chopped a bunch off and donated it to Locks of Love.

I'm growing mine out again, it's just barely past my shoulders now. I know that long isn't really the best style for thin, fine hair, which mine is, but I can't think of anything else to do with it. A few years ago I had a buzz-cut with spiky bangs, which looked really good with my face, but alas, I fear I'm too old for that now. And I got tired of the near-constant maintenance of keeping it that short. Now I just trim my bangs (Vulcan bangs! yay!) every couple weeks, which is manageable. I guess there's one good thing about it being so thin; even once it gets long again, I'll still be able to stuff it all under my swimming cap [Razz]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I would definately braid the hair at night; I did all the time when mine was long. (It's still past shoulder length, just not halfway down my back like I kept it before baby.) And as for greys, I think there is nothing cooler than a grey-haired lady with a full, long head of hair. You used to see it all the time, but the ladies who are currently "old" are the ones who grew up in the 30s and early 40s when short hair was in. So feel free to keep your hair long; you're a different generation, you know.

I put my hair into two braids most nights. I hate rolling over on to it, and it tickles me when I wear it down.

During the day, my hair usually looks like the link Ketch posted. I do it with little clips, and my hair is wavy enough that I can put it up wet and it looks fine. It takes me about 30 seconds. Yay!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Hmph. *is jealous of Katie* I agree on hating to roll over onto braided hair, though. I usually braided it and then clipped it on top of my head to avoid that problem. Now that it's shorter (and before when I was really, really tired) I just put it up on top of my head in a bun or something similar with a scrunchie, to keep it out of the way.

I had to cut my hair for the production of Harvey--where is the support group for me? [Cry]

My hair was well past my shoulder blades. I cut it back to shoulder length hoping that would be enough, but it wasn't, so now it's barely neck length.

When it was really long I would mostly get it caught by chairbacks when I was sitting down. It didn't really cause any issues while sleeping. I also was starting to find it hard to reach the ends when brushing. While I was growing it, the period waiting for the bangs to get long enough to stay back out of my face was the worst thing, but I think men look pretty stupid with short bangs and long hair, so there wasn't really a choice.

*sigh*

I second what Carrie said - trimming it is neccessary, but you don't have to do it too often. I trim mine every 6 months, and I just have my sister do it - she cuts it straight along the bottom, and I save myself 20 bucks. (hairstylists hate it when you show up with long hair and want it dried anyway.)

If your hair's naturally curly, long hair is all kinds of fun. I wash mine and either braid it or twist it and secure it with bobby pins. Then, I wear down it that night or the next day without combing or brushing it at all - you just let it do its thing. Sometimes, I wash it at night and sleep on it and wake up the next morning and go. Ever since the long, wavy, free look got cool I haven't touched a blow dryer or a brush in years. [Smile]

I, too, have long hair and usually it does not pose much of a problem. It has been this way for close to 20 years though, so maybe I'm just used to dealing with it. For sleeping, usually I do as described by dkw above, twist it a little and throw it up behind my head and it doesn't seem to get in the way. If I try to sleep with a braid, even a loose one, I usually wake up with a headache.

As far as growing it out from bangs, hang in there. I've found that once you hit one of those weird times where it drives you crazy and all you want to do is cut it, if you can hold out for about a week, the urge will go away and all will be good again... until the next one, of course. I say this because, even now, sometimes it will make me crazy and I'll get a thought to cut it, but if I can make it a few days, it will go away.

Also, the best thing I have ever found for holding my hair up (and one of my jobs is in a bakery - I don't want to eat my hair and I'm certain no one else does either) is a three pronged hair stick that I got at the Renaissance Festival a few years ago. I use it all the time and it is fantastic. In fact, I need to make it to this year's faire so that I can buy several more to have backups in case I lose or break this one.

Lastly, to Farmgirl - [Big Grin] cheers!! for fellow readheads!!

I am also growing my hair out again. Since I only get it cut, like, twice a year, hopefully it won't take too long. I never get split ends anymore, and a few ideas as to why: I almost never brush my hair. (I do blow dry it, but not completely dry.) It's curly, so I use a pick, but for straight hair a comb would probably do. In order to do this without pain, I condition every time I wash my hair, which is at least every day. The only time I have issues untangling it is when I go to bed with it wet (rarely). I always sleep with it loose because I had a bad experience after having it in a bun for several days straight (I still washed it every day, but it never had a chance to dry fully which led to a mildew smell. Yucky.).

Um, I am too young to accept my gray hairs, so I dye regularly. Pomegranate is my color of choice.

For curly hair, long or not-so-long, this stuff is fantastic. Walmart or Target has it for $4, but this was the first link that worked.

My sister has told me I am never allowed to grow my hair out. As she is the cosmetologist, I don't get to decide what happens to my hair. My sister also informed Nathan of this before we got married, that upon marrying into the family, he surrendered all rights to his hair to her.

I have reddish hair naturally, and red red hair with help of a bottle, which I use to deny all existence of the plethora of white hair that's mounting its own war in my head. Sigh. I'll probably be all white at 45. And mine is wavy, which is odd because that didn't happen until my early twenties. And mine is just below shoulder length at the moment. I try to not do longer because it's too heavy and I can't do anything with it anyway. Buns don't work because of the weight/volume issues and my general lack of anything even resembling knowledge. Luckily, with the wave, I just let it do what it wants and it generally works out okay.

Olivia - A half an inch every month is a good length to trim. I'm going grey, also, and I've taken to dying my hair black. But I actually really like the look of grey-on-dark hair, especially with a youthful face. It's nicely dramatic.

I have red highlights in my hair (natural) and 3 of my five daughters have red hair.

My daughters and I all used to have long hair... mine was almost to my waist. I braided and twisted and curled and ponytailed all the time back then (about 6 years ago). I made fancy hair doo-dahs to put in our hair and spent a small fortune every month on conditioners and such. It took me years before I was able to braid my own hair, but I finally got it down. I found I could do it better without a mirror FWIW.

My two youngest daughters that still live with me have long hair again, after cutting it short a few years ago. These two don't like to be fussed over though, and only want to have pony tails usually. Kind of a pity really, but I don't have the time to fuss with hair like I used to anyway.

Actually, in some ways, I think that having long hair can be less work than short hair. I never had to "style" my hair when it was long. In the summer, I kept it braided because of the heat, and in the winter, I just pulled it into a barrette usually. No bad hair days then. [Big Grin]

maui, I'm with you on long hair being easier. I let mine grow to where it's about middle of the way down my back. I'll probably let it grow to my waist again then trim to keep it that length. My concession to vanity is that I dye parts of it bright blue every 8 weeks or so. And every three months or so I get it trimmed. Otherwise, I do nothing to it except wash and blowdry. I almost always wear it down, as putting it up is too much of a hassle.

At night, I twist it up on the top of my head as I lay down and generally it stays there. I've tried braiding it to sleep, but it feels too weird.

And I too am getting the occasional gray hair. I pluck them when I find them. Go figure I can deal with bright blue, but not gray.

I have been growing my hair long, but since I have been sick, it is falling out! The doc tested my blood, and it seemed OK. He said sometimes the timing goes off, and hair sheds all at once, rather than a bit at a time. I keep cutting it shorter, though, because it gets really stringy at the end of the day. I do not like it! I want my hair back.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Long hair was hard for me. That's why I cut it when I was about 7 months pregnant, and have been keeping it barely longer than shoulder length since. I have hair that tends to snarl and tangle and knot and rat. It's a pain even at this length. I did like the way it looked long, though.

Mack looks great with short hair. Not everyone can pull itb off, but she looks great.

I used to have a short cut I liked, but long is better for me, I think.

My hair isn't really curly but it isn't straight either. I use that Redken glass stuff to get it to lay flat. That's the stuff for ethnic hair. [Big Grin]

My gray hairs are actually very white, too, though the rest is very dark, especially in winter.

I like using hair sticks - especially the ones that look like chopsticks. Got into them because CT uses them and I would emulate her in almost every way if I could. [Smile]

Elizabeth- mine fell out after I lost the weight I gained with Robert. Then I had all this baby-curly short hair growing in all over, and had to cut off much of my hair. I donated it, too. Eventually the new hair got long enough to not be stading up all over like a two year olds'.

When I sleep, I usually just part the hair down the middle and have it out to the sides of my head (I sleep on my back). I think it would probably be uncomfortable to lie on a braid that goes all the way down my back.

I actually have a lot of problems with my hair when I'm doing Aikido. I definitely can't have it down, but the bunch created where the scrunchie is gets in the way when I roll backwards. Also, when I fall backwards I slide for a good half foot because my hair reduces friction with the mat.

I, too, have begun going grey at one patch on top of my head. I'm 19. Grrr.

Uh Raia - that is so absolutely not true in my family. All of us who were redheads or are redheads turn white. My grandmother had exactly the same color hair I do now, and she turned all white (except for eyebrows and eyelashes *grin*) on her head fairly early in life. And I've begun to have white.

raia, my grandma's hair used to be almost the exact color yours is now, but curlier (yeah I know it's hard to imagine, I have some pics somewhere), but now it's almost entirely white, except she dyes it to be a really light strawberry blonde, just so she feels sort of redheaded.

I have long hair, but because it is curly, it looks like it is shoulder length. I sleep with it in a ponytail. I do not blow dry it, that would make it frizzy. Sometimes my hair looks red, depends on the light, but in reality it is blond.

It'll be interesting to see what hair color mine and Nathan's kids will have. He has blonde hair, but his family has blonde and red hair--his older sister's hair is this awesome coppery color. SO cool. My family is blonde and strawberry blonde.

I've known several redheads who went blonde when they aged. It's not at all uncommon.

Olivetta, the weird thing is that my hair feels ultra healthy. What there is left of it! (I have a lot of hair) I am waiting for the all-at-once-grow-back. Instead, it is more hair in the drain every day.

The only other people in my family with red hair, my great-grandmother and great-aunt, both had very dark auburn (and very long) hair. Both also ended up with white streaks before they died. As mine is much lighter to start with, it's anyone's guess as to how it's going to end up. Color-wise, at any rate. I can (almost) certainly say that it will stay long - security blanket, of sorts, I suppose.

Long-haired redhead here [Big Grin] .

(Edit to say that that T-shirt is great! We should get a Hatrack ladies redhead Tshirt started!)

I used to have short, pixie-cut hair but I've been growing it out for about a year and half now and it's presently about an inch or so below my shoulder blades. I have very frizzy and curly hair which is straight only when very short or the day after it's been washed. It turns out that it's not so "puffy" when long, though, and my fiance adores it so I figure I'll keep it longat least until after our wedding [Big Grin] . Thank you all for the reminder to get it trimmed, though. I have far too many split ends at the moment and would like to get it restyled so that it's layered again and falls in my face a bit differently. I'd like something that makes me look "spunky" and a bit more my age [Smile] .

Elizabeth, my hair did this several years ago - one day it started to fall out noticeably more than usual and I ended up losing quite a bit. It went on for about three months and then stopped. While it was happening, the docs were at a loss as to what it could be. All of it did grow back, though. A couple of years later I was diagnosed with low thyroid and the docs seemed to think that the hair loss could've been the onset of the symptoms. Who knows - hindsight, you know??

That happened to me when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. They decided it was stress. It stopped eventually.

Wait, wait, redheads go white? Everyone in my family goes very platinum blond - ie so blond it's almost white but still has that yellowish sheen.

AntiCool, Aikido's going pretty well. I've been doing it since last September, and I finally feel like I'm getting the hang of most of the techniques. When the spring semester started, we had an influx of new students, so I'm now sometimes in the position of being partners with someone who is less experienced. It's great for learning, but a bit uncomfortable at the same time. I feel like I'm not qualified. I've had some problems with falling too hard, too. No serious injuries, but my back hurts a lot. My instructor says that practice will help, and he will try to make sure that the others are more gentle.

Olivetta [Kiss]

Stray, you vixen! Great look.

Long hair is way easier for me than short. Plus, there's the Mrs. Potatohead look I get going. Short hair totally nixes my mojo. On Jamie, it's hot. On me, well, I look like something dug up in Idaho.

I don't blowdry my hair, so it takes forever to dry. That's the only drawback. Pretty much by the time it is fully dry, I'm ready to wash it again. The best way I've found to handle this is to do a French braid down each side and then join them, weaving the long tail back up and through them. A coronet of braids, and it stays up well. dries faster, too, and when I take it down, I have lots of waves for at least a few hours.

Sticks are defintitely the easiest, though, and quite interesting from a physics point of view. I'm often asked if it's really just the sticks that holds the French twist up (yes, it is -- and done carefully, you only need one to do it).

The easiest of all, though, is just rolling it up and knotting it on the top of my head. That will sometimes stay for hours.

*Joins support group

I have long hair (it's almost 1/2 way down my back, and I'm tall)

It only annoys me when I'm putting down my backpack, and it is caught underneath the strap. And pulls. I have a sensitive scalp.

I am not really sure what colour it its, though... It's all natural, so it gets sun highlights in the summer, and becomes blonde, but in the winter, it kind of goes a reddish-brown. It's also naturally bone-straight, and it is really hard to do anything with. I usually just put it up in a high ponytail.

I have shorter pieces at the front, not because I cut them that way, but because I chew on them. And they break.

See for yourself

When I was a kid, about 6 or so, I had REALLY long hair. Well past my butt. But it had a horrible tendancy to snarl. My mom would actually pay a friend of hers to come over and brush my hair, cause she couldnt stand to do it herself. Apparently, I would sit in front of the mirror, with silent tears streaming down my face, and make her feel horribly guilty. But I wouldnt let them cut it. I'd freak out every time she tried to talk to me about it. The final straw came when, one day, my moms friend was particularly rough with my hair(she was of the rip and pull school of thought), and I turned around, grabbed the brush, and hit her as hard as I could with it. In my mind, she totally deserved it. But the woman convinced my mom to force me to cut my hair. They put it in a ponytail, chopped it off, and handed it to me. It was the equivilant of killing a pet rabbit and serving it for dinner, with a special present made of the tail, in my mind. I never really forgave that poor woman. She was the mother of my best friend, and everytime I went to her house, I'd eye her warily, looking for a hairbrush or scissors.
Anyways, I've never cut my hair since then, except for the occasional trim. It's now past my butt, and still has that wonderful tendancy to snarl. It takes forever to brush out, and I swear at my hair alot, but it's worth it. 2 of my girlfriends have bright red hair of the same length(mines black), and we have fun with it when we bellydance to Irish music [Wink] .

And Jeniwren, is your hair blond? If not, then what do you use for your blue streaks? I was told I would have to bleach some streaks if I wanted to get a true blue color, which I dont want to do.

I've had short hair and long hair - right now it's in-between as I'm growing it out.

My daughter, who turns 7 on Monday (!!) has never had a hair cut. She has movie star hair. It's a beautiful mix of light and dark brown. Though it's fine, it's incredibly wavy and often curls up into little tiny ringlets on the ends. I loooove her hair.

And she wants it cut. [Frown]

I was just flipping through a hair style magazine this morning trying to decide what to do with my hair. I should have known to check Hatrack first!! My hair is long (about to the small of my back), thick, wavy and FRIZZY. I have started using Garnia Fructis shampoo which seems to have helped a bit with the frizzies. When I want that "sleek" look I try all those tips from the magazines...blow drying with a large round brush or a large paddle brush, using straighting balms ect. I can never really get it to look right though.

I have really thought about getting a total "new look" when I reach my weight goal.. new clothes, new hair style ect. Right now my idea of fashion is jeans, t-shirts and pony tails!!

Wow, Foundling, the same thing happened to me when I was six. I refuse to let anyone cut my hair anymore. Unfortunately, my hair's maximum length is getting shorter as I get older, so while it used to grow past my waist, right now it is only to the middle of my back.

(Everyone, please don't try to tell me that trimming my hair will make it grow longer. I let my cousin cut off six inches and it has not gotten any longer in the two years since I allowed her to do that.)

Space Opera, at four years old, my sister's hair was longer than mine at 11 (I had never cut it). It was GORGEOUS. She was too little to be able to take care of it properly.

I cried when she got it cut.

Now, though, I think short hair suits her better. Of course, now, she's grown it out again. She's twelve. [Razz]

I'm maybe joining the support group and maybe leaving...

In short, I'm considering cutting my hair again. Short, that is.

[Smile]

I have very curly (ringlet-y curly) very dark hair. I had it long all through high school and first year uni, flirted with various shortish cuts second and third year and then fourth year had it cut pixie-short

I grew it out for my wedding - after a bit over a year of growing out it is on my shoulders dry (and curly) and halfway down my shoulderblades wet/straight. Pinned up here, but the general idea is there.

Thing is, though I like being able to play with it (as Katie said, styling is easy with curly hair) I am sick of the maintainence. Conditioner. Hair masks. Just the hot icky feeling on the back of your neck.

So... I'm considering going short again.

Advice? Opinions? Anything?

Like imogen, I have also been considering cutting my hair. It's currently a bit past shoulder length when wet (considerably shorter when dry), and very thick. It's actually easier to put up and under (snood, hat, wig, whatever) when it's long-ish.

But I'm getting tired of dealing with it, and it's not like I have anyone to keep it long for. And there are a couple hats I have that I can only wear when my hair is shorter.

Then again, I do like it long. I have really great hair, and I do hope to have someone who will appreciate it before it would have next grown out if I were to cut it short now.

But it was really easy when I cut it all off . . .

Same here, Rivka.

Plus pixiing my hair was something I'd been planning on doing since junior year in high school, but I wanted to do it when I was Ready. And boy, am I.

I had pixie cuts (or slightly longer bobs) most of the way through junior high and high school. Then I grew it long in 11th and 12th.

The year after that, I asked someone to trim my split ends. She talked me into 2-3 inches . . . and cut off EIGHT. It's been 13 years, and I still haven't entirely forgiven her.

Before she cut it, it was midway down my back (and longer when wet). It hasn't been that long since, and while short tempts me, so does growing it that long again.
