SAT: 1450/1600 - I took the old SAT
GPA: 3.75
AP Courses: 4 Junior year, 2.5 this year.
Ap Tests:
Bio - 5
Calc BC - 4
US History - 4
Physics - 3
Yet to be taken: Chemistry, Euro History

Colleges:
Colby, Maine - rejected
Wesleyan University, CT - rejected 2nd round early decision
Swarthmore - rejected
Haverford - rejected
Amherst - not heard, most likely a rejection
Skidmore - accepted
IU - better get accepted... (state college rejects nearly no one).

Nothing is ever easy. *sigh* Probably the fault of my GPA (and therefore, my not working hard enough in class), so it goes. I got Swarthmore's today, Amherst is an Ivy for all practical intents and purposes. If I didn't get into all those others, I'm not gonna even be in the running for Amherst. Admittedly I'll probably be just fine in either IU or Skidmore, so I'm not that worried. Still its not fun to keep seeing rejection letters. I just wish the last one would arrive so I could open it and get it over with.

I only applied to one college, largely because I didn't want to have to deal with rejection letters. Wherever you end up is where you were meant to be for however long you're there. I know you will make the most of it.

Yikes! I know they rescaled the SATs, but 1450 is still very good, isn't it?

I'm glad I went to school when I did and my 3.4 was considered pretty good.

Good luck. You'll end up somewhere you'll learn a lot. Just hang in there.

Don't assume you are out of Amherst yet. My year, people who got flat-out rejected from Dartmouth got waitlisted at Harvard.

Is your GPA on a 4 point scale? If so I can't believe you'd be rejected for 3.75. Did you have any other things to add to your application like sports, leadership positions, band, drama, etc? I know they usually add quite a bit to an application as well. Good luck, with Amherst.

Its on a 4 point scale, with +.5 adjustment for honors classes and a +1 adjustment for AP. It was instituted my junior year, and wasn't retroactive. So I got screwed GPA wise by that cause I had almost solid honors classes.

Yes I had other stuff to add to my app. 2 and a half years of swim team, 2 years of backpacking club, 4 of chess club, 2 of academic superbowl, 4 of orchestra, 1 of exploravision, 2 of PROUD (the schools GLBT rights group), 2 of NHS. Swim team absorbed almost all my time my first two years, which is why I quit it half way through season junior year and joined a bunch of other stuff.

wow, I'm surprised you had a hard time. Both your GPA and SAT were good. A 3.75 isn't really enough for ivy league...you really need at least a weighted 4.0 for that, but with the SAT score...I would think that you would have an easier time that you would get into more schools. I guess you never know what a school is looking for.

It sucks that your school didn't start weighting honors classes until your jr year. I think that really screwed you over with your GPA.

If you mentioned all of those activities, some schools may have seen you as a "joiner", which is generally a slight downcheck.

A joiner is someone who just goes around joining lots of groups and never really getting involved with any of them (not true in your case, but impressions might be different on the apps).

My best freind went crazy and applied to about 12 schools (most of them being long shots).

I remember one day she got 4 rejection letters at the same time. She was not a happy person that day.

I got rejected from Swarthmore, too. And it was my first choice. We should start a club. [Smile]

My sister got rejected from her first choice. But she's graduating in a month, and she's loved her four years at the school she ended up in (U of Michigan). I think that within a range, your school experience is what you make it. It depends less on the school than it does on you.
