Exhausted, I lay on the bed, waiting. The stale turkey sandwich the nurse brought tasted like heaven, my stomach's reward for being so patient.

Yours was not an easy birth. Your heartbeat was compromised by the cord wrapped around your neck. My belly would tighten with the effort to bring you to our arms, and your tiny heart would beat slower, and slower, until the release of pressure brought back the incessant gallop.

The doctor was worried. He wanted to take me to the operating room, but you were too impatient, too anxious for life. I couldn't wait; there was too much pressure. And there you were, crying lustily, screaming at the shock of the open air and rough towels.

They took you immediately to another room. I was assured that you were fine, but the nurses couldn't hide the concern behind their eyes. I insisted that Daddy go with you, so I waited alone.

He came back, smiling. You were safe. My heart sang.

I ate that heavenly sandwich, and waited. I still hadn't held you.

The nurse brought you to my room. She put your bundled little body in my arms. I looked into your beautiful blue eyes, and I wept.
