Hmm... Poster #209...

I'm not validating anything for certain, but it seems a little interesting to develop a hurmoristic thread regarding this.

For a start off, it's #209. Being OSC, you'd expect a 1-10 number of a member. To think that OSC is later than Tom Davidson is a little weird.

More so, the unusual sense of humour not found in the books ("Jetlag") is more than enough to change the known character.

I can't think of more right now, anyone cares to join and try to unvalidate OSC's identity?

This is a humour thread, #209! Please do not get angry or contact yourself in order to kick me out, OK? Thanks in advance - if request accepted.

"Being OSC, you'd expect a 1-10 number of a member."

Well, you would, if you didn't know how they initially created all the members on this site. [Smile]

Speak to us, Speaker, how did they?

Alphabetically ordered transfer of usernams from the old forum to the new one (there were many forums before this one, by my count, there were 6 "ones" before this [Wink] ).

And Tom took out the Holy Book and spake to the crowds.

In the begining there was AOHell and God saw that it sucked. But it was all he could get at the moment. And at the AOHell, God created Hatrack River. And a bunch of fanboys signed up. And then Card signed up.

Or something like that. [Smile]

Still, Tom is after Orson, and Davidson is after Card.

Moreover, look at the join-dates!

Also, he's written down as a member, not an admin!

But if he's not running this place, then who is?

maybe because he doesn't want to admin the boards?

Do not question who is running the conspiracy, er, um boards.

They do not like to be questioned.

OSC needs a member title like "Da Man" or something, just so he's set apart from the rest of us mere mortals.

How 'bout "Benevolent Dictator"?

No, no, "Beloved Dictator". Yeah.

No, wait, after reading the other side, it must be "The Dude". [Big Grin]

Here's a ponderance:

I was a registered member of The Olde Forum, but delayed coming here for a few months because I didn't want to have to get used to a new setup and thought I could overcome my hatcrack addiction anyway.

I wonder if my old name got transferred and I never even knew it!

I believe there was indeed a Morgan Majors transferred. [Smile]

And they were not transferred in strict alphabetical order, but rather in -- I believe -- four batches. OSC was in the third batch, and I was in the second. I have no idea how the batches were derived. *grin*

lol, this thread reminds me of something one of my old professors used to say when reminding us to bubble our SSN on our scantron tests.

Okay. So I remember that when I first start lurking, you could still read one of the older forums -- the one that had threaded conversations and featured many posts by D. Michael and John Keats and Darlene and others. Anybody remember when that was?

I know I lurked as far back as late 1999, but it may have been even farther back than that.

I don't have an opinion about OSC and his member number but I do think that Annie is very cool for using the word antediluvian. It's one of my favorite words. [Smile]

What I want to know is why he is registered in 1999 and not "A long time ago!" That just doesn't make sense to me.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

It doesn't make sense to me, either, since as far as I know most of the people who joined "A Long Time Ago!" were imported with the rest of us into the new system.

My theory is that the first two batches imported didn't automatically create a registration date in the database, and that the admin noticed this and set the field default to Current for the other two batches. In this way, the early batches got fairly unique start dates. [Smile] But I could be wrong.

I remember back in...1998 or was it 1999. I know I was on the internet (undoubtedly using Netscape) at my highschool library (which actually burnt down in flames in 2002) and I remember I had signed up as unicornwhisperer but there was some maintenance on the website or something so I had to sign up again, so I might as well be member #114 for all I know. [Smile] So OSC could actually be Member #1.

Posted by Ela (Member # 1365) on :

Yeah, Tom, for that matter, how come your registration date isn't "A long time ago!"? Doesn't your membership predate this particular site?

fairly unique
You can't say that, Tom. You cant adverbise "unique", "perfect", "empty" and so on. Like you can't say "very dead", you can't say "fairly unique". Sorry, but it's colloquialism! One can't give amounts to absolute things.

But still - no-one is admin, except Kristine, to the best of our knowledge! No ownership has been detected, and I'm sincerely worrying [Angst] !

One could learn something from OSC's ("Obviously Suggesting (a) Conpiracy", said SteveRogers) absence!

"Yeah, Tom, for that matter, how come your registration date isn't 'A long time ago!'? Doesn't your membership predate this particular site?"

As I said, I was not in the first batch of alphabetical names imported. *grin* I think that error was only perpetuated in the early batches, AFAIK.

Pish posh. He just did say it, so that proves that you can. And obviously, if he quantified something absolute, then it wasn't really being used in an absolute manner.

Here you will find a list of the first 209 members of the forum, along with registration date (it is password-protected: user hatrack, password osc209). (Mods, if you'd rather me not post such things, I'll gladly take it down.)

As you can see, the first 121 names are in case-sensitive alphabetical order, with [A-Z] being listed before [a-z]. Only 13 of these have registration dates that are not "A Long Time Ago!" (myself included). Tod OConnell (82) has the earliest actual registration date, of September 15, 1998. Yozh (88) has the latest registration date of these first 13: April 23, 1999. Clearly the "new forum" got off to a slow start. Note that these first 13 are not in order by registration date, but are mixed in with the import. After this, additional registrations are in order by registration date as far as I can tell.

It is possible that there were multiple imports, but the most recent one would have reordered everyone alphabetically. The last one (if there were more than one) presumably happened some time between April 23 and May 14, 1999.
