Finding Serenity, edited by Jane Espenson.

Haven't started reading it yet, just now got it. But I can give you the back cover description.

"Firefly's early demise left fans with a deep sense of loss and plenty of unanswered questions. From what was wrong with the pilot to what was right with the Reavers, from the use of Chinese to how correspondence between Joss and network executives might have gone, from a philosopher's pespective on 'Objects in Space' to a sex therapist's analysis of Inara, 'Finding Serenity' is filled with writing as exciting, funny, and enthralling as the the show itself."

240 pages, Benbella Books. $17.95, currently $12.21 at Amazon.

I'll be in my bunk...

[Big Grin]

My bank account is dwindling. I think I better buy the DVDs first...

Amazon.ca seems uninterested...

So far (I'm halfway through) the essays are very hit or miss. I really like Larry Dixon's analysis of the show; he pointed out subtleties I was never consciously aware of, like character clothing color palettes.
However, John C. Wright's article on the role of chivalry in Firefly annoyed me, and one or two other ones seemed (to me) to have missed the point entirely.

Liking the book overall so far. I'll keep checking back as I go... [Smile]

There's an essay explaining why, if the crews were swapped, the crew of Serenity could take over the Enterprise universe while Captain Archer and pals would have a tough time of it in the Whedonverse...

This is worth the price of the book.

I really wish you'd told me about this a week ago, so that I could already have my copy of the book. Seriously Chris, you've got to stop with the slacking off! [No No]

W00t! I can always use good news that concerns Firefly.

You know I was actually wondering the other day if, in a fight between the crew of the Enterprise from 'Enterprise' and Serenity, who would win. I came to the conclusion that in space it would probably be the Enterprise, due to superior fire power. I say "probably" because if the crew of Serenity could board the Enterprise it would Mal and co. hands down.

I would like to have seen that [Smile] .

But... but... Veera!

If Serenity and Enterprise got in a fight then River would kill everyone on Enterprise with her brain.

Yeah, Serenity is a cargo ship, not designed for combat and completely devoid of any external weaponry. Also, Enterprise has the transporter, and Serenity doesn't have any shielding to protect it from Enterprise beaming a bomb or something on board.

That said, Firefly is much more wiley, so they'd proably come up with something and win the day anyway.

Mal would kick Riker through Serenity's engine. Jayne would finally get an ear, only this one would belong to a french captain instead of an alliance agent. River would close her eyes and many many red shirted extras would fall. (No power in the 'verse can stop her.) Kaylee would hide. Inara would sit in her shuttle and roll her eyes. Zoe would get shot by Worf, but not as fatally as Worf got shot by her. Wash would complain that Zoe was always off doing things with the Captain and Book would be left behind at a monestery to gather more Strawberrys for Kaylee.

Oh, and Simon would get to fix multiple phasor burns from all involved, especially Jayne.

And all this would be made possible because the Enterprise pulled Saffron out of a trash bin.

darn...I was hoping that it was a book in the firefly/serenity world (maybe based on the screenplay). Though...that book does look interesting.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Well, the screenplay is slated for release, so you'll be able to get a bit of a fix there.

I meant on the ships, not the weaponry on board the ships. Veera is of course superior [Wink] , and its owner far more indiscriminate.

Hey, Teshi, did you see the link I posted the other day to the Firefly script that didn't get filmed?

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Yes I did, and now I keep getting confused that it's not a real episode! Even in that draft it was very good.

I keep thinking, "That's like the fair episode!" and then remembering that it only exists in script form. My memory of it is very vivid. [Smile]

I did the exact same thing! Reading it I could see the show unfoldinging in my head, and it was so vivid that I was actually surprised when I rewatched the DVD set and it wasn't on there.

I watched the making of today. It was very sad. You can see how much everyone loved the show- how much everyone cared to make it so groundbreaking. It must be so painful to everyone involved.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Yeah. There was talk for some time about releasing episodes in a straight to DVD format, with the DVDs available by subscription, which I personally would have thought was great, but I doubt it'll ever materialize. Still, I wouldn't have thougth that a movie would have materialized either if it weren't for the fact that it was in production by the time I discovered the show.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I assume you've watched the deleted scenes?

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Yes. [Smile]

I love the one for Our Mrs. Reynolds, and I thought that the second one for Serenity, where Zoe provides a bit of exposition, would have actually improved the pilot, had it been left in.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Yes; when I saw Our Mrs. Reynolds I was wondering why River did not comment upon Saffron- this is the scene in which she does. It was a very good scene- they should have put it back in for the DVD.
