How can I find out every book that a specific short story has been published in?

Ask the author. They usually know.

No luck with the particular anthology of the chess story?

What if the author is dead?

The chess story is part of why I want to this, but there are other reasons.

What story are we talking about?

The more academically inclined members may have a better idea, but find out who has the rights to a story and they should be able to give you a comprehensive list of every instance that story was published legally.

One of my favorite short stories is a chess story... and it was in at least three books, I'm fairly sure.

It's not just one specific story. I want to do this with a few dozen short stories/novellas.

What was the information on the chess story again?

Title and author?

The chess story is Quarantine by Arthur C. Clarke.

My source only returns the two books I'd listed in your previous thread. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Try calling your local library and see if there is a central means of researching the publication history of a short story.

My library was no help.

The only other option I can think of is tracking down the owner of the publishing rights - which is a lot of legwork since you have a number of stories to research.

Wait...isn't Clarke still alive?

Posted by Portabello (Member # 7710) on :

Yes, but many of the short stories I want to locate are written by other authors.

Again, I'm not trying to do this with just one short story. I have dozens of short stories that I want to do this with.

Short Story Index

I'm fairly confident I used a hardcopy of this resource when I was in college. I don't know if it could find every printing of a particular story, but it might help locate some.

See if Quidscribis will jaunt down the road and ask old Arthur what's up.

*whew*

I thought I might have missed something.

From xerna's link:

Retrospective coverage back to 1984.
That doesn't go back far enough, I'm afraid.

Quarantine

If the story is scifi/fantasy, ya use the InternetScienceFictionDataBase.

BTW: Name refers to the author. Scroll the searchengine list for the Title.
