Has anyone tried either of these and would like to share their opinions of them?

I played Eve Online for several months shortly after it came out of beta, and have some friends who were still playing it up until fairly recently.
Short review: Write yourself a BASIC program that displays a number slowly counting upwards on your screen, save yourself the monthly fee.
Eve was interesting for a time as I explored what's possible in it, but ultimately it's a fairly dull game. I was most into it when coming up with new ways to make money. I was on of the first to do the mass-recycling scheme which later became too popular to be as profitable. The problem was after figuring something like that out, actually executing it would always be a slow, repetitious process.
On the upside, with the long travel times between systems Eve was THE BEST game to play while reading a book, doing homework, etc.
Look up Escape Velocity. It's not an MMORPG (unless there's a new version I haven't played yet) but it has a lot of the good parts of Eve with a lot more fun.

Yeah, I played Eve for a couple months. But that was more than a year ago. I have friends who continue to play it, and they insist it's a blast. I'm not convinced. Travel times are long. Mining (if you do it) takes a long time. I tried to punctuate the tedium of travel by cleaning my apartment. I swear, my apartment was never cleaner. It was too much like having a second job, though. That's why I quit playing, actually. I figured if it was that much work, then I could devote the energy to something more productive than playing THAT game.
Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy a good computer game as much as the next person. I won't, however, spend hours upon hours every day the way Eve wanted me to. The Eve universe was spectacular. I wanted to explore, and I wanted to do all sorts of things in that game. But I've got my own universe, first.

I saw a really really hilarious story about a scam on Eve Online a little while ago. I wish I could find it again, but I can't remember where I saw it. That story alone was enough to get my buddy into the game. I haven't played it.

Actually, I am less concerned with long travel times (though that is a pain) than with whether or not I feel like I am in an alternate universe.

When I played, Storm, the best part about Eve was the people. There really seemed to be a great community in Eve, with corporations that took over wild space and things like that. The game looked incredible, too. Like most MMOs there is some tedium, though you don't have to mine much if you don't want to. I spent almost all of my time blowing stuff up, trading loot, and the like. I'd probably still be playing it but I stopped when we had Thomas.
