I told Emma that if she could go the whole afternoon without hurting the kitties, I'd give her a cookie with her juice for her snack, instead of bread.
I forgot, when I said this, that we are out of baby cookies, and even graham crackers.
She's now got her face and hands covered with chocolate from the Milano I gave her.

*laugh* Definitely not a horrible mother. She's over a year, so the occasional bit of chocolate isn't a big deal.
And it's very good that you followed through on what you promised.
I trust you got pictures of your chocolate-covered daughter.

That's what I thought. I debated; will she forget what I told her, even though I had to remind her twice to keep her from pulling a tail? Or will she realize that I didn't do what I said, and will that fuel her "behaviors"?
The other day, she got really mad at me for removing her from the cat's water dish for the fifth time in an hour, and stormed away (as much as you can storm when you're still crawling), looking over her shoulder at me, then went in our room and closed the door in my face. I opened it to talk to her, and she shoved hard to slam it all the way shut.
I opened it a crack so she could get out when she wanted to and left her alone. She played for a few minutes and then came out, having calmed down. I guess she needed some "time out".
1 going on 13, I swear.

I totally agree with following through on a promise.
And, next time you run out of cookies before making a cookie promise, if you have a cake mix, you can make cake mix cookies - very easy.

We don't use cake mix much; I usually bake from scratch. We do have the stuff for molasses cookies. And I can even make them with blackstrap molasses, a good source of iron and calcium. Hmmm...

Sounds like good mothering to me.
I feed my kids healthy meals, but when I give them dessert it's decadent. It all balances out.
