*muses* You know, when Sister Keller died, I was upset IMMEDIATELY. I cried at the funeral, and I was sad immediately. I wonder if that's because I knew what was ahead? I knew what it was like, so I knew how it was sad. With my step-brother, I don't have experience with this, so it's almost like I don't know how to be sad yet. Either that, or it's the numb thing.

With Sister Keller you also knew the outcome so you knew (emotionally, I mean, not intellectually) what the appropriate emotion was. With your step-brother it’s still at least partially up in the air. It’s possible that your emotional response is “on hold” during the we-don’t-know-for-sure-what’s-going-to-happen phase.

He woke up!! His heart is responding rapidly to treatment, and when he woke up, he could move all his limbs and recognize people. He's not reciting Shakespeare, but they think he will be okay.
He's still very sick (in the ICU and on the ventilator), but he's on the mend.
They don't know what caused it all. They now suspect that the seizures caused the heart trouble and not the other way around, but they don't know what caused the seizure. So, still, stuff to find out. But, he's alive, and it looks like he'll stay that way for a long while.
