A teacher put a transparency in a HP 4050 LaserJet Printer. The transparency melted in the printer and ruined the fuser main kit.
To get it replaced, GovConnection has quoted $224 as the price to fix the printer. The school told me that they cost about $500-700 to buy new and they are not interested in fixing it.
The gave me the printer. It is off of the school inventory. I can do with it as I please.
I am thinking of taking it apart for fun, having an Office Space moment, fixing it for personal use, or donating it to an organization that will fix it and give it to an underprivileged school.
It seems like such a waste to throw it away.
Is there anyone who would have interest in this printer? Is there anyone who thinks it could be salvaged to help someone?
Or shall I pull out my gangsta rap?

Doh! Transparencies and laser printers definitely don't mix. If they are lucky all the screwed up was the fuser, which can be replaced fairly easy. It's a pretty old model which is why they say $500 to $700 to replace - they are all old refurbished. Should be salvagable, I'd probably donate it somewhere that could use it.

You should definitely be able to fix that for less than what they quoted you. You could probably replace it yourself as they are designed to be replaced. We have a lot of those printers in our school district. Check your yellow pages for places that fix HP and ask how much a fuser is

If you search on that part number (C4118-69011, I think that is right, you might want to doublecheck) you can find it even cheaper, like $80 on exchange.

If your old laser printer is like my old laser printer, you could use it to dim the lights ever time you want to print.
