I went to the eye doctor yesterday for the first time in six years.
I have been wearing the same contact lenses for the same six years, I am ashamed to confess.
My eyes developed an allergy to the contacts which, if it went on any longer, would result in my eyes permanently rejecting contacts, leaving me with fogged up glasses when I exercise.
I have to take steroid eye drops for two weeks, and may not wear my contacts for at least that long, maybe longer.
So when they say change you contacts every six months, change them.
When they tell you to lose some weight because your heart is under too much strain, (try your hardest to) lose it.
They do actually know what they are talking about, it turns out.

O_o Wearing the same contacts for six years?! Shame on you! When I wore regular daily wear contacts, I didn't wear them more than 1 year. When I wore the monthly lenses, I never wore them longer than 2 months.

I get to go see my ob/gyn again today -- to discuss "test results" and possible surgery. I really don't want to have this conversation at all. I feel fine. Maybe if I just ignore it.......

Oh yeah, and those eyedrops I have to use? Not covered by my insurance. 65 bucks. Ouch.

Ouch, Liz! I use the planned replacement lenses. I can't imagine wearing the same contacts for 6 months, let alone years!

Ouch indeed! I'm really sorry your insurance doesn't cover your eyedrops. That's a bummer. At least you don't have to use them forever.
Farmgirl, good luck with youre appointment today. Just remind yourself that, when it comes to your health, ignorance is never a good idea.

Oh, I survived the appointment. Spent 45 minutes in a waiting room to talk with my doc for 10 minutes about test results.
He and I have decided to take a "wait and see" approach. Take another sonogram in six weeks and see if the mass has grown (in which case we will look at surgery) or if it is smaller (in which case it is probably just endrometriosis bleeding back into the ovary.)
So that gives me six more weeks for prayers for it to go away...

Elizabeth, that happened to my husband. He got contacts at a very early age, when he was really too young to be responsible for them. He did not take care of them properly, his eyes became so infected that he cannot wear contacts at all now as an adult.
I'm glad you caught it before it got as bad as that!

I read the info sheet. Along with not being able to wear contacts for a while, paying big bucks for the eye drops, and having one of the pads on my glasses broken and digging into my nose, what I have is called:
Giant Papllary Conjunctivitis.

Elizabeth, dear Elizabeth. I'm glad the doc gave you a spanking. For shame!
For anyone who knows the numbers behind glasses prescriptions, I used to need -2.75 in both eyes. And I used to wear contacts. But the contacts gave me headaches and I couldn't read with them in, or with my glasses either, so I stopped wearing contacts and started wearing my glasses only when I absolutely needed them because I got headaches so bad. I couldn't afford new lenses at the time, so this was a reasonable compromise.
I move to Sri Lanka, go to the eye doctor, tell him my eyes improved and the lenses were too strong. He laughs at me. Not possible. Not possible at all. He tests my eyes. I walk away with -0.75 prescriptions on the lenses.
He then lectures me about wearing glasses all the time because that's better for my eyes. Whatever. I don't. I frequently have days when I don't need glasses at all and can see everything in focus. Now, it's only when I'm tired that I need them. *stabs eye doctor* Fie on you! Wear them all the time my foot! Fie!

People who are nearsighted wil have improved eyesight as the shape of their eye changes with age. This helpful event will backfire on those people who never had glasses, who will need reading glasses in their elder years.
Maybe that actually happened to you, Quid.
I have an astigmatism, and my eyes are not going anywhere but further into Monet's impressionistic world.

I actually have a theory on what happened with my eyes. See, the helpful bits of info are these:
When I'm tired, I need my glasses much more than when I sleep well.
And piece of info number 2:
My eyes started improving after I started on CPAP to treat my obstructive sleep apnea.
It appears, in my case, that my vision problems are entirely related to sleep and sleep deprivation. And before anyone tells me it's impossible, let me stress that I am a walking anomaly. The rules seldom apply to me the same way they do to everyone else. Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Ah, the pain continues. One of the nose pads of my glasses has been mmissing for ages. Now that it is hpt, and I cannot wear glasses, and the little pads from the eyeglass repair kit fell off, I have a nice little ggouge in my nose. With the sunglasses-over-glasses approach, the weight of the glasses is even heavier, making more of a gouge.
But I have an appointment for next week to get contacts! And one of these days I will fill the prescription for new glasses.
Until then, my pennance continues.

I have to get Toric lenses. Any deals appreciated. Once I figure out what kind they are I will check Walmart, and the Internet. I have heard good things about getting contacts online.

I've gotten contacts at 1800contacts (it's online). But my eye doctor's place meets their price, so it's no real advantage for me. It might be for you, Liz. I also wear torics.

I've bought contacts from a half-dozen different online contacts sites -- whoever has them cheapest each time I need new ones. Cheaper than anywhere near here, and they deliver to my door -- with delivery either free or still cheaper than getting them elsewhere.

I just put a piece of white medical tape over the missing eye pad of my glasses, which has gouged a little hole in my nose. As I was taping it, I though, oh heck, the other pad has fallen off as well! I am a real looker, let me tell you!

Do you have a Target or Wal-mart with a place that sells glasses near you? I know Target's glasses place will replace the eye pads for free. (I know this because my son's have been replaced twice - so far - in the last 6 months and mine have also, but I've had these glasses 8 years. No wonder I'm blind.)

Well, Kayla, I tend to "make do," and I will be getting the new glasses soon. I will check that out if i am in the store. What burns my biscuits is that I have to buy a whole eyeglass repair kit just for those little sticky pad covers. I wish they sold them separately.
Amyone need any teeny tiny screws and a teeny tiny screwdriver?
