possible explanations for the sex scene:

-Balian felt it was his duty to serve the princess of Jerusalem in ALL ways.

-Balian hated Guy from the moment they met, so he thought he would shame him by nailing Guy's wife.

-Balian willingly gave in to lust for revenge on God for not speaking to him on Calvary hill.

-Balian was reconsidering the Church's teachings in light of what the priest did to his wife, and decided sex out of marriage was okay.

-Balian was overcome with lust and his adherence to knightly virtue later was an attempt to make up for it.

-Balian was regaled with tales of courtly love during his travels, so that he felt sex with Sybilla would not only not be wrong, but would be expected of him as a knight in that situation.

-Balian figured he was going to die soon and wanted to get laid one last time.

Um, how about this one, Eva Green was hot, and Balian was lonely.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

- the producers just threw it in there gratuitously because they thought it would please more viewers.

- sex sells, everything else be damned

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

That and in Hollywood gratuitous sex never has any consequences.

Posted by Olivetta (Member # 6456) on :

Yeah. That made no sense, other than maybe the hot/lonely thing. Either way it would have been better without it, I think. It would have made Balian's refusal to marry her more moving, if their attraction had never been consumated.

On the other hand, Oliver Stone is cutting The Gay out of his horrible Alexander movie on the DVD release.

Because the movie tanked because of the gay overtones. Sure. It had nothing to do with it totally sucking wind in every other way. [Roll Eyes]

It's no more patently absurd than the rest of the quirks and Olive's friend did get to see Balian's back. [Big Grin]

Yeah. I love the woman, but I just don't GET the Orlando Bloom thing. *shrug*

What can I say, Olive? Flower power! [Big Grin]

Considering that's the ONLY reason I'd every buy the thing, He's probably lost most of his potential customers by that move. [Roll Eyes]

Really? Casue that was was drove me away from it, it didnt bother me at first, but it just got so overplayed.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Well . . . I'm not quite as concerned with the artistic merit of the movie as I am with seeing Colin Farrell's naughty bits. [Blushing]

LOL! The reviews I read said that the movie really failed to lend any of the guy's relationships any believability. Roger Ebert even said the movie seemed ashamed of the character's historically accurate manlove relationships.

When Roger Ebert says a movie needs more heat in a gay relationship, you know the movie has serious problems.

I think the only part that interested me was the Persian dancer scene, mostly because I think Colin Farrell looks weird blond. Actually, I think he's kind of fugly. But that's beside the point.

*grins* At least you're honest about it Karl. [Big Grin]

I just didn't see Colin Farrell as Alexander.

Well, to be honest, I can't picture Farrell in any role - although that might be because I keep mentally mixing him with Will Ferrell.

Colin in an elf hat, anyone?

Only an elf hat? [Party]

Only if it's pulled down low enough to cover those enormous caterpillars growing on his forehead.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Colin Farrell is one of the most heart-breakingly beautiful men alive, caterpillars and all!

(Though I'll agree blond hair doesn't suit him)

We seem to have widely- divergent taste in men, Karl.

Which is probably good, come to think of it. [Wink]

Ya know, far be it from me to begrudge you Adonis, Karl. [Big Grin]

Actually I have wildly divergent tastes in men. My taste in just about everything is pretty eclectic.

I HAVE seen pictures of the persian dancing boy in Alexander. He's fairly popular among LiveJournalers. I think he's really Spanish or Basque.

All I know is that he's reeeeeeeeally ... bendy.

Well, Balian was more of a combination of the real Balian and Guy of Lusignan, and Guy was the real lover/husband of Sybella, so, it's not THAT far off.

The real Balian

Yes, and if you combine that with Guy of Lusignan, you get the love interest with Sybella and the King of Jerusalem bit.

This seems like a pretty good article on the actual history of the events in Kindom of Heaven

I have to agree with Olivetta, Colin Farrell is weird to look at. The strange thing is he does look like a relative to Val Kilmer, who I find very hot. I dunno.

That's a more drawn out explanation of what I said at length in the other Kingdom of Heaven thread.

THe weirdest thing about Colin Farrell to me now is his accent. It rings wrong to me, now that I've heard actual Irish accents. Maybe he just comes from a part of Ireland I didn't spend a lot of time in.
But he has beautiful eyes.

Ni!

oh, come on... Colin Farrell is a twit, and his soon-2-be-gone career is good evidence of that.

Posted by Olivetta (Member # 6456) on :

His eyes may be lovely, but those furry things hanging over them frighten me.

Honestly, though, I think he's attractive in a neck-down sort of way. I have not been impressed with his acting, but I haven't seen most of his movies (see openning sentence of this post).
