really - it's a blessing, right . . . ? to be awake when the rest of your neighborhood sleeps? to have all the quiet time you could hope for?

Hi Shan,
I have been an insomniac the last few weeks too. I'm thinking of going back to school and taking a cobal theory class- the reading in computer science always put me to sleep.

Jonny! What are you doing up? Studying for finals, I trow! *waves back*

Heh, I would *so* be tempted to come over just to surprise you, but 3 other people are counting on me to synthesize their parts together for a 10 page paper that's due tomorrow.
Stupid schoolwork!

So, crazy question for all you night owls. Do you think I should wash the dirty dishes now or wait until tomorrow when I am actually - hopefully - able to sleep? (Which means of course then they would be put off for another day . . . *grin*)

Silly, silly woman, never work when you can't sleep in the wee hours of the morning!
You are morally obligated to watch old movies, worry over problems that are beyond your control and come to brilliant conclusions that will be completely forgotten by morning. If you must "work", I suggest baking an apple pancake then inviting the rest of us sleep deprived folks over to share it with you.
Posted by Tater (Member # 7035) on :
You guys have got a real problem here. One of my friends suffered from insomnia for a little while, and he didn't take it seriously.
We don't like to talk about it, but let's just say things didn't turn out very good for him.

LadyDove, an apple pancake sounds delightful! I happen to have all the fixin's - however, in order to make one in my cast iron pan, I would need to wash some dishes and clean the kithen a bit . . . hmmm - this must be the sort of predicament you referred to.
Actually, I solved a work-related conundrum last night when the insomnia grabbed me for a couple of hours after a three hour nap. That was rather fun.

Tater, I refuse to look at those links in case I actually do get some sleep this evening and then have a nightmare. Hmphh. (grin)

Moby Dick? Hmmm . . . I think I may have at one point. Let's see - what Hemingway do I have on my shelves -
A Farewell to Arms The Sun Also Rises For whom the Bell Tolls
Which do you suggest, AJ?
Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :
grin, I haven't read any of the three. I guess the question is whether you want to go to sleep or stay awake... The problem is that you can't acutally read a good author, because you'll start enjoying it too much and not be able to put the book down. I've heard Billy Budd is also good for insomnia therapy... especially according to my roommate who had to write a paper on it.

It should be an insomniac council. It's like the Jedi council, with all of us in a room, or in a room with monitors each with one of our faces on it and a moveable webcam so we can see the other monitors...of course we'd have to have a webcam in our homes, too.
Then we could have MEC come in and we'd tell him that he can be on the council, but we would not grant him the rank of master because he doesn't know how to use lowercase letters...

It's three a.m. here and I'm so sleepy I could die. But I'm trying to solve a computer problem before I leave for New York, so I'm kind of trapped ...
Got to go to bed ... sleep ... sleep ...
I did watch Hero tonight, though, so maybe I'm unconsciously refusing to sleep in order to avoid dreams of people flying at me with swords.
Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :
I've watched Sin City yesterday and this is - I think - only the second time that a movie that I just saw made it to my dreams the night after it. I mean, usually I can go through horror movies and sleep like a baby, but this one... Probably because it got me all excited?! That's scary too, that such a film could get me in the state I was yesterday... And no, I don't remember exactly what the dream was about.

Basically you lie still and allow a soothing voice to guide your mind through a tour of your body. It is very relaxing.
I use this CD which can be purchased from Amazon. Or, you can try a free sample from Tim Rowe.
Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :
Interesting.
Last night, at the same time Orson Scott Card was posting in this very thread, I was silenting grumbling about him.
Tired beyond belief, I had a short section left in Homebody and I could not put it down. Then, when I did finish it, I was up for another hour thinkng about it.
I would curse him in a pretend way, but after reading that book, I can't joke around about that stuff. (shudder)
Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :
Scott, what did you think of Hero? I have it now, and will probably watch it in the next few days. I haev heard mixed reviews . . .
BTW, I have a question . . is it OK to call you Scott? OSC seems too bulky if I am asking you a question, and I have heard/seen others call you that, but I don't recall if it was a discussion about you, or including you... I have never asked before.
I hate it when people call me Bob rather than Rob, so I thought I would ask.

Seriously, have any of you tried this stuff? I might've actually had a normal teenagehood if I had this drug then. I might not of gotten addicted to late night episodes of Star Trek:TNG and M*A*S*H.
But thanks to insomnia, I got to experience the greatest invention ever-the Rotato (as seen on T.V.).
Posted by alluvion (Member # 7462) on :
insomnia sucks.
sure, waking up as a kid to stare at the ceiling and wonder about the connections of all the things you've learned about is... well like putting a puzzle together, and you do, and it all makes sense, and you go to sleep.
as an adult, that confounding puzzle is like sailing between the... (line? greek reference to twin debacles?) <- precisely like that.
Posted by Theca (Member # 1629) on :
I don't remember putting that particular puzzle together very well as either a child or an adult. There were always more pieces getting added all the time.
Posted by Tater (Member # 7035) on :
What's wrong with M*A*S*H?
Posted by carolan (Member # 2106) on :
I'm carolan and I'm not an insomniac. My only excuse is that I work nights so I'm in a constant state of sleep debt.
I needed to mention that I'm slightly horrified at the thought of 'canned chrysallis'.
Let's leave it at that...
Posted by Exploding Monkey (Member # 7612) on :

Yuo aren't on strong cough syrup or steroids for the pneumonia, are you, Shan? They can keep people awake.
Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :
I think the initial "drying out" phase after two weeks of usage from the codeine/guiefnessan(sp?) cough syrup kicked off the insomnia, Theca. That ole "ker-boioioing" reaction.
The flovent and albuterol inhalant at full-dose give bad jitters and racing heart, so I take them at half-dose.
No caffeine products right now, in deference to the flovent/alb reaction.
However, it is definitely hard to sleep. Once I'm there, I definitely don't want to get up, though . . .
I figure at least part of it is due to the fact that my lungs aren't working well enough yet to let me get in my daily required dose of aerobic activity.
I think the answer is it will just take time, and getting weaned off the inhalants - my system is just super sensitive to chemicals . . . and needs strenuous physical activity on a daily basis in order to relax and sleep.
Posted by Exploding Monkey (Member # 7612) on :
Well, at least you're not a cronic like me.
Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :
Well, I don't know about that, EM. I had to work hard over the first 34 years of my life to learn how to sleep - I've had insomnia since I was a kid. But about 2 years ago, it finally started leveling off, and I could be guaranteed decent sleep at least 4 out of 7 days. So this slide back is a little disturbing and frustrating. I'm sure it'll all resolve in time . . .
Posted by Exploding Monkey (Member # 7612) on :
Oh shoot. I take that back then! LOL

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :
Okay, well I don' wanna do the reverse and only get a few tonight, so I am holding on to those good sleep vibes . . .
In case I can't though, I have the old Narnia series to watch while I do laundry and other household chores.
But, no! Positive sleep vibes - that's the ticket!

ARRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
