Tonight I get to do just about the coolest thing anyone has ever done. Ever. I get to sing Stormy Weather in a bar/lounge accompanied by an awesome jazz trio.
Tomorrow night I get to sing it at the concert. Every year they do a jazz solo night with the chamber group at the high school where I student teach. The teacher and student teacher get to sing a solo too! And the jazz trio invited a few of us to appear with them tonight during their weekly gig at this place.
FUN! I don't get to wear red sequins, but I do get to wear sparkles. And no. They won't let me [drape myself] on the piano. Or even sit on it.
(edit= Here it is! Stormy Weather Listen to the end if you listen to anything...the first verse is rather crappy on my part.)

You should totally get to lay on the piano. But it still sounds like fun.

Isn't it great when that sort of opportunity presents itself? I got to lounge on the piano during our school musical and I nearly fainted with delight. I didn't get as cool a song, though... *jealous*
Yay! Sparkles! Have a great time!

Not let you lay on the piano? What gives! Jeesh - the nerve of some people! Good luck!

Well, you could always snuggle up to the drummer. I bet he'd let you perch on his snare if you smiled nicely.
Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :
Not the snare, Bob - goodness! That'd muffle the rattling sound!

From the drummer, or Narnia?

That's awesome. Make sure you growl a little here and there-- it's that kind of song, you know.

Maybe if you used the right word? You want to lie on the piano. Laying is for hens.
Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :
Eh, humans can lay too, just in the past.

And if they're using the transitive verb.
And by the way, Narnia, that sounds like something you need to have pictures of. Ask a friend to come and bring a camera.

Tonight was a total blast! So fun to be backed up by such wonderful musicians.
I'll try to get pics of tomorrow night, but there's definitely going to be a recording.

I love how the aspect of lounge singing is synonymous to draping ones self over a piano. I honestly have no idea why that amuses me so much. My mind thinks of it as some sort of parody but I can't think of why.
Anyway, I can't wait to hear the recording!

Ooh, sounds like fun. I'm sure you were scorchin'!
Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :
Glad to hear it was fun! And it made me giggle to see how you edited the thread title.

Disclaimer: Listen to it to the end. The beginning stinks on my part. But isn't the jazz combo great?
I contemplate my jazz abilities and realize...they're very few. But I'm learning. I just can't escape the fact that I'm a classically trained singer...I end up not sounding as jazzy as I thought.
Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :
Ugh. On second thought, don't listen to the first verse at all.

*wolf whistle*
You definitely hit your stride about halfway through. You have a beautiful, pure voice. You'd have to undo some of the work you put into getting that voice - carve in some rough edges - to really do the jazz thing. But the song was beautiful, and the combo was great.
Try smoking a cigarette right before you go onstage.

Wow. Awesome.
*steals to add to music collection*

Thanks you guys. (You're totally right Dag. I think I should have done it in a lower key too, don't you? That might have made it a little more....belty.)

This is great, Cecily.
*takes it, too*
Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :
Beeeeeyoootiful. I'd take it if I could.
Posted by hansenj (Member # 4034) on :
SO cool, Cecily! You sounded beautiful.

Woohoo!!!
*cheers*

You were great, Cecily! That must have been so much fun to do!
Posted by JemmyGrove (Member # 6707) on :
I think you sound great. I like the cigarette idea, though. And the first verst isn't bad -- it's really pretty clean. If anything it's just too straight.
I know this was just for the combo . . .
Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :
Lovely! *steals too*
(edit: I just showed you off to my entire family, proudly going "I know her! That's Cecily!" They were very impressed. )

I love this song ! Narnia, i hope heard your mp3 in my home tonight.

Thanks you guys for all the compliments, they make me blush.
It was a lot of fun and I hope I can arrange it so my high school kids get a chance to do something like it with this combo. They're called Tall Jazz (www.talljazz.com) and they come in and work with the kids...it's so cool.
(Farmgirl, the pianist is a he. He's an extremely tall, very attractive 40 something that I rather liked....
Ahem! Yeah, he's talented, isn't he?)
