So here's the football version, just like our baseball one which seems to be going well: http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/52986

I’ve set up a Hatrack Fantasy Football league on Yahoo. It’s free. It’s fun. If you’ve never played it’s very easy and you really don’t have to do much if you don’t want to. Basically there is a draft and all the people in the league divide up NFL players onto teams of their own and score points based on their performance. First game is Sept 6th, so there is plenty of time to get in, set up your pre-rankings of your players if you like, have the draft, and do any trading before the season starts. I left the league settings to the same as the public leagues.
So here’s the email Yahoo usually sends out with an invite:

You have been invited to join jaytrek25's Custom League in Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football.
In order to join the league, follow the link above or go to game front page , click the "Sign Up Now" or "Get Another Team" button and follow the links to "Join a Custom League". When prompted, enter the League ID# and password below.

I'm 1 for 4 at the Hatrack Football Championship.

I'm going to see about making that 2 for 5.

Micheal Vick sure sunk me last season.

Like five games out fo the gate he won but had me in negative points.

This is my season.

I'm coming prepared and ready.

So this is going to be our official league?

Provided the answer is "Yes, of course!" I will be back to defend my title [Big Grin]

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

I'm in. Shlo never made a league last year...if he is around to make one, I'll just join both.

Posted by Ryoko (Member # 4947) on :

I'm in.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Well, me being the forever OSC defender, I would have to say that the "official" one would have to be made by OSC himself! But I'm happy to say that this is a Hatrack league and will be people who sign up from our little piece of paradise of the internet.

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

I'm in. Ryoko looks like we're going against each other first round.
Wait, it's an autopick? Meaning our players will be picked at random?

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Not random. You pre-rank your players in the order you would draft them, and then the draft is run at a date in the future based on the orders from all the teams.

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

I'll happily join in again!

Go Camels!!!!!!!!!

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

Oh I get it. I'm used to live drafts. I wish I could know the order of drafting though so I won't end up picking two quarterbacks or something like that.

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

I really prefer a live draft also. For the same reason as Jaime.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

It's usually randomly chosen. The algorithm is smart enough to not overfill you at a certain position. I prefer autopick, as getting everyone online for a live draft is like herding cats. It makes it much more fun after the draft, where you have to trade/waiver wire pick to get the best players.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

I had a lot of fun with last year's live draft, but it was a hassle getting everyone in front of their computers at the same time. AutoPick drafts are infinitely more convenient, but the tension just isn't there.

A couple years ago, the draft order was determined by the order in which people signed up. But then it changed to random. Then we did the live draft. Not that I've been playing every year or anything... [Smile]

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

If we do a live draft we could just do what seems to be the most convenient time and everyone who can't make it can just pre rank. Live draft leaves it more up to the user and less up to luck, I think.

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

Would be nice to make sure it happens before the first week of the season. Last year, we were a wee bit late in starting up.

Posted by The Silverblue Sun (Member # 1630) on :

How are we going to determine draft order?

Posted by UofUlawguy (Member # 5492) on :

Just checking in. It looks like there are only nine people signed up, and the system won't let the draft take place when there are an odd number of teams. We need at least one more person, but preferably three or five more.

I'm game.

Okay, when is the draft set to occur? A few days ago, it was warning us that we could have no draft while we still had an odd number of teams. Now that we have ten, what's the holdup?

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

We’ll have to set it to ready. But drafting now isn’t really a good idea since pre-season hasn’t even started. It’s still very early. Should we wait till next month to draft?

Posted by UofUlawguy (Member # 5492) on :

It doesn't matter to me, as long as it happens. The way the announcement was worded earlier (i.e. that we couldn't have a draft with an odd number) made it sound like the draft was imminent, or that the date had already passed. I just wanted to make sure we're set up to draft sometime.

I see no reason to wait for the preseason, but I see no reason not to, either.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

If we draft now we’re basically going off of nothing. Where as if we have a few preseason games in we’ll know a little more info about who will be playing. Like for example Ricky Williams, who knows what he’ll do. This also gives us a chance to get our pre rankings in some sort of order.

Posted by UofUlawguy (Member # 5492) on :

I don't think the preseason tells you squat about any of the teams or players. In fact, it can be downright misleading.

I think last year tells you much more. As for rookies, or players who were injured or AWOL/high last year, you take your chances.

And I never touch my pre-rankings. I think it's pretty futile.

Posted by NinjaBirdman (Member # 7114) on :

I'm in. I'll be following this much more than I've been following the baseball one. I like the head to head matchups.

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

Hope you'll be able to make it Brettly, we need an even number for the draft...

And I sure don't want to have a bye for the first week.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

I've got it set to 14. 10 is the normal public league, so we might be streached.

Brettly, where is it stopping you? You have a Yahoo ID? Are you in other leasgues? I think Yahoo has a 4 league limit

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

How are the playoffs going to be? Is it going to be last two games? I'm not very fond of that method considering last year I went undefeated the whole year until the last week in the championship where I suffered my first loss. I took second place for losing once when the champion had about 5 losses throughout the season...

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

And I still wish we had a live draft going...

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Public is set to 4 teams for week 15 and 16. So nothing in week 17.

Posted by graywolfe (Member # 3852) on :

3 Time playoff choker (graywolfe) joined in the last slot, so it should be locked in now. Any idea when the draft is? I'm still working on my rankings.

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

Heheh graywolfe, read what I said a few posts up. Talk about choking in the playoffs. Undefeated the whole year! First loss came in the championship!

Jay.
Will you open up the league some more, I've got one friend who wants to play, he's never played fantasy football, but he loves football, and the other guy played in the league last year, so should be grand fathered in.

The more people the more fun the more challengeing

please boost the rosters up by 6 spots
at least 4

Guy? I beg to differ [Big Grin] I'm back with my usual team of "The Bombs."

This is, what, our fifth year doing this? I've not failed to miss the playoffs, but last year was the first year I wasn't in the consolation bracket. Terribly exciting.

But I do have to second (third, fourth, whatever) the question: when is the draft?

Yo Jay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When do we draft?????

Posted by The Silverblue Sun (Member # 1630) on :

Jay.

you're turning out to be a crappy comissioner.

Hatrack Fantasy Football has been a Hatrack tradition here for a while, and usually it's a come all affair, one year I think we had 20 teams.

To cap it at 10 or 12 or whatever knocks out people who would like to play, and deserve to play.

I've written on here several times, and you've yet to respond.

The season is almost here.

Please, do a better job.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Were there really 20 teams? Man, that seems like a lot - I'll give you 16, but I'm not sure if we ever had 20. We've had odd numbers, and I think we had one year with 10 or some ridiculously small number...

We're currently at 14, which is a decent-sized league, IMHO. I'm rather ambivalent as to how many (if any) more teams get in, though Jay, if you're reading this, I would personally like to draft within two weeks, to allow maximum time for roster shifts and trades.

Is anyone thinking of doing another Pick'Em this year? And if so, can we not use ESPN? Last year they stopped recording picks the last few weeks.

Sorry I’ve been AWOL. Had a crazy couple of weeks. I promise I wasn’t ignoring you all, just really didn’t see the posts. Please feel free to email me anytime though. That gets in no matter what! Again, sorry….

Just bumped it up to 20 people, by popular demand. So get on in and keep’em coming. That gives us 6 spots if we want them, but we have to have an even number to draft.

Also, what does everyone think of setting the draft to ready on the 25th? Gives us one more week of pre season to let some dork break their legs and get our pre rankings ready. Plus we’ll have over a week to trade and what not before the actual draft.

This might just be one of the lowest-scoring years in Hatrack Fantasy Football history - for how many starting running backs are there? 32. The odds of anyone getting a major points-caliber QB and RB? Slim to none.

How exciting [Smile]

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Yeah, for sure. And think about off weeks. It’ll be impossible to have back ups. Someone is going to have to have an awesome draft or be really lucky with some rookies.

In Year 2, the first year I played, we had 20 players and two QB spots, two RB spots, two WR spots, a TE spot, a K spot, and a D spot. That was deep. Trying to get even a starting QB was ridiculous.

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

Whoever gets Manning this year is taking it. I feel very bad for whoever gets the #20 draft position.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Yeah, but they'll get picks 20 and 21 - doesn't the league rotate like that? So whoever gets #1 would then get #40.

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

True, but I'd rather get a huge star and a bunch of dregs then get a bunch of mid-level dregs. Actually if you get like #7ish that's also pretty bad since all the top stars are taken but you're still going to be getting the dregs like #1. I'm so negative [Smile] ...

So I have Donovan McNabb at starting QB (finally, I've had him as my top pick every single year). I have Eli Manning as a backup QB, not too shabby.

I have a wide reciever that got 980 yards last year, along with one who got 800. Pretty nice. My starting TE also had 980 yards last year [Cool] .

At running back, my guy got almost 1500 yards and 12 TDs last year. Yikes. If he's even half that productive this year he was a steal.

I would say I am very pleased with my draft results [Smile] .

I went with a really different draft strategy and my plan held through it appears until about the sixth round. Not too bad.

I've got some fair players and a few sleepers that I'm happy with, but those last two drafts left me scratching my head. Akili Smith (who won't make the team at TB) and the New Orleans defense?? Both of those lame-os have been released back into the wild.

Posted by newfoundlogic (Member # 3907) on :

My draft strategy fell through after the first round. The New York Giant defense?!

Posted by Sopwith (Member # 4640) on :

NFL, don't feel too bad about that defense. They were ball-hawks against Carolina last week. They might not be able to post any shut outs, but you're going to get some points from interceptions.

They've got a fair pair of DBs and their safeties are much better than I expected.

HA HA HA HA HA HA!

That's the thing about auto-draft.
You don't know when what and where you're drafting.

HA HA HA HA HA HA!

My strategy this year was to go running back heavy. I didn't get any running backs. HA HA HA.

BUT I did get the BEST recieving core in the League.

Randy Moss (he rules, I moon those who say other wise)

Andre Johnson (my faveorite player in the league)

Laverneous Coles (will do good if pennington holds up)

Jeremy Shockey (will do good if NYG have a qb)

My running backs are pooh and crap.

That's my weakness.

And my QB is Leftwich who can put up big numbers.

If anyone needs a WR let me know, I need an RB.

I ain't parting with Moss or Johnson, Coles and Shockey are on the table.

Woot!

Let's do this!

Brettly I'm kicking your ass!

Jay I'm kicking your ass!

and NewFoundLogic you Loon,
I'm stomping you into dust!!!!!

Let the games begin!!!

Posted by newfoundlogic (Member # 3907) on :

I don't see myself capable of making a trade, unless someone is really high on Ronnie Brown...

I can't afford to give up my decent receivers or LT. I have feeling no one going to be as high on Drew Brees as I am so that doesn't leave me with much. I openly admit my bench players are garbage.

Championships for Dolfansnlions-1.
Championships for Supermen-0.

I thought he was runner up the first two years. Then in year three it was the 7 seed vs the 8 seed (me) for the championship. Last year I can't remember who won because I was eliminated from playoff contention pretty early.

I won last year! I feel so... unremembered. [Frown]

But I am back and mostly ready to try to make the playoffs this year - I'm at least 4-4 on making the playoffs, even if last year was the first I landed on the top side of the brackets...

I will just say that the waiver game is going to be ridiculous this year. Talk about no chance for mid-season pickups.

I hope just to be a .500 team.

Although, I had already signed up for 1 team before this and that draft went pretty well. How I ever ended up with this lineup is beyond me:

Manning (QB), Martin and Westbrook (RB), An. Johnson WR, Baltimore and Pitsburgh (DEF), Stover and Reed (K).

Some of my backups can be starters on other teams! I guess that is a big difference between 10 and 20 teams.

Hickory Huskers really got lucky when they drew me in week 10, I'll have four starters on a bye week. [Grumble]

Also I made an offer to CM5. Basically I want Harrington as a backup and you need a TE. I'm willing to negotiate, but I can't claim to have much leeway, I have no depth at any position except possibly TE.

Posted by newfoundlogic (Member # 3907) on :

Actually if anyone is interested in either Pollard or Graham I'd be willing to deal for a defense, a better kicker, or real depth at WR or RB.

Posted by GaalD (Member # 6222) on :

I have Patrick Ramsey to trade away if you want him Brettly.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Evryone must like their teams! No trades yet.

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Its just that nobody really has much to give up! We can trade our third string guys till we are blue in the face, but every starter for starter trade which doesn't involve the same position leaves a hole somewhere methinks.

But with that said, I happen to have two starting quarterbacks on my team, and I would be willing to let go of Eli Manning if anyone has a decent running back or defense to trade me (or wide reciever I suppose, though I am relatively deep at that position). He may not have done very well last year, but a lot of experts are listing him as a "sleeper" pick at QB. Let me know if you are interested.

My plan was simple, in my prerankings, my top 25 players would all be running backs, mostly running backs who catch passes too. Then I'd rank them according to skill. It paid off handsomely, I'm strong at running back (#2 and #17 ranked RB's in Alexander and Lamont Jordan), strong at WR (DJACK, Jimmy Smith and Larry Fitz, three WR's ranked in the top 25 at WR), and I have a very nice high upside TE in Troupe, to go with another high upside TE in Courtney Anderson who stole Doug Jolley's gig last year. I've got decent depth with Mewelde Moore (likely to start week one in Minny and maybe steal the RB job from lacklustre Michael Bennett), K. Curtis (Martz expects him to have Bruce-like #'s this year), and Bobby Engram (caught 8 TD's as a 3rd WR for Seattle last year)to go with newly annoited starter Tim Ratay.

Indeed my only weakness is at QB and Kicker. Rackers was terrible in Cincy before finally getting his head straight in Arizona, and at QB Rattay and Carr don't strike me as world beaters, but I'm set at RB, set at WR with great depth, and set at Defense too with two excellent defenses.

Not to be disrespectful, but it looked like some of you guys and ladies either didn't edit the prerankings, or the computer really screwed you (I tend to think the former as I've never had a bad draft as long as I edited the crazy stupid prerankings in four years of doing this)over. Good luck all. Even though I believe I have the best or second best squad, I never fail to lose in the playoffs so I believe I'll live up to my name, "The Choking Paradigm".

QB: Carr
RB: Alexander
RB: Jordan
WR: DJack
WR: J. Smith
WR: L. Fitz
TE: Anderson/Troupe
K: Rackers
D: Pittsburgh.

Won't be very easy beating that lineup this year in a 20 team league (5 players ranked in the consensus top 72, not bad for a 20 team league). Btw, I'm in the market for a QB, Engram, K. Curtis and the like are available. Will consider moving starters but only for elite talent/combo trades.

Okay, this is really oddd....
I joined a second league that a friend is running. Guess who got Manning in that one, too? Also got 3 other players and a defense that I have on Hatrack. And that one had a live draft with me absent!

Either it's finally my year to do well or something is going to happen to Manning this season... (knocking on wood that it's the former)

Cool feature in our league - when you click on matchup, there's a poll at the bottom that you can vote on who'll win. Might be cool to play around with it. The button to click to vote for a manager didn't show up on my screen, but it's just below the helmet in case anyone else has this problem.

Velly intellestink... I saw the vote links at the bottom of the active roster listings, in case you're still looking for it, Jay. And now I see what the Edit Smack thing is about, we didn't have that in my league last year.

Its not hopeless for me yet, I just need McNabb to have a 33 point night... Its possible, right?

about 400 yards and 4 touchdowns should do the trick I think...

Heh, I expected to go into tonight trailing(since I have TO, Reggie Brown, David Akers, and the eagles' defense playing tonight), but I'm already ahead. [Smile] My team rocks.

Tonight is exciting for me for both of my leagues. In Hatrack league I'm trailing four points with Duckett and L Smith (TE for Philly) left to play with no one playing tonight from my opponent. In my other league I'm up 14 and my opponent has Philly's D and Akers left to play. If Duckett runs in a TD I'll be set in both.

I also feel kind of bad for the Supermen. It must suck scoring 73 points, but getting beaten by 1 point. He would've beaten anyone else by alot.

So who's the Blue Knights? It's a big game next week between us two, #4 vs. #6.

Ha! Can't keep me down for long!

(And for the first time in recent history, I'm cheering for the Bears this weekend - I need Orton to have a big day! It's really hard to do, however, and goes against everything I've ever been taught.)

NFL moved the Miami Dolphin game to Friday, 7 PM due to Wilma. Plan accordingly

I've got to say that it's pretty rough being in a 20-team league. If you end up with a couple of clunkers on your team, the pickings are mighty slim in free agency.

But heck, I'm having a great time trying to find some diamonds in the rough. (I'm finding mainly gravel in the rough, though.)

Carrie: Orton better do bad or I'm going to be very fed up with Baltimore's defense (although they did have a great week last week...which doubled their total points for the entire year...)

I've been going crazy in the free agency for recievers. I started the year with such a great recieving core. Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, and Braylon Edwards (who was doing great before missing the last 3 weeks because of a bye and then injury). Now I'm picking up recievers and dropping them non-stop. I found a good second rb in Baltimore's second-string rb, who has been doing extremely solid the past few weeks. And hopefully T.J Duckett will start getting those TDs again that gave me so much hope. And Eli Manning better have a bounce-back week this week.

I realize that most everybody lost interest in this league a long time ago, but I just wanted to mention that it's now over, and that I won. Yay me.

yep, yay you! It was a great season!

Hey, do you advertise that you're going to have a league? If possible, I'd like to get in next year.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Good job! It was a tough league to do anything in with so many in. But that kind of made it fun.

With Defensive players in the mix next year we could do better with 20 people.
