I leave for a little while and look what you guys have done to this place.

Dobies are the DEVIL!
Posted by Parsimony (Member # 8140) on :
There are far too many bad dobies on the front page. If you are going to attempt a dobie, at least make it funny.

I think they are responding to Telp's "Dobie Day" thread.

Doesn't matter. They still suck. There have been, since the dawn of time, four funny Dobies. The rest have been a complete waste of space.

I'm reasonably sure that at least one of those words is being used in a way that I'm unfamiliar with.

Aww, Tom, I never knew that you noticed

True. But for the life of me, I can't even remember what they were.... Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :
Tom, dobie-ing Princess Bride. So sweet.
Posted by Crotalus (Member # 7339) on :
Okay I'm ignorant, what does dobie even mean?
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
This thread contained a working definition, kinda.
Posted by Ela (Member # 1365) on :
I agree with Tom. I think most dobies are pretty dumb and a waste of space and time.
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
I think most are, too, though I think there have been more than four that were funny.
Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :
I open dobie threads once every never, on average. Just not worth the energy, and I find them annoying.

Yes, I agree with that part. But in general, dobie irritate me, especially when they are dobies of a serious thread - it's as though the person making the dobie is making fun of the serious thread, and it strikes me as disrespectful - though I know most dobiers (is that a word? ) don't intend disrespect.
I have to say, though, I don't mind dobies half as much if they are dobies of a thread that I thought was rude in the first place.
Guess I'm a hypocrite. Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
A Dobie ought to be quick, clever, unexpected, and most importantly, infrequent. Most fail on all four counts (IMHYESCO).
Posted by Ela (Member # 1365) on :
I agree, Moose. Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

I remember, a long time ago, when Pops was just an arrogant noob. Now he's the boss, and I'm just a forgotten name.

For the life of me, I think he's being far too generous! I've yet to laugh at one. :-P However, keep trying, who knows, anything can happen. Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :
I'm guessing the four funny ones were before your time, Tatiana. (Unless, of course, you're an alternate name of an old timer... I can never keep up with that).
They were possibly written by Dobie himself.

Tatiana, aka aka aka ak et al, is one of the oldest-timers Hatrack has.

The real crime, I think, is that the people who make them *think* they're funny. How can someone be so out of touch with what humour really is?
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
Was that supposed to be funny, Bob?

Parsing that sentence was a delight! Thank you for that!
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
I hoped you would like it. Thought about throwing in ana kata, but that would've been overkill.
Not that that has ever stopped me from doing things before, of course....
Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :
ack! ak! I didn't know.

See, this is what happens when you don't follow along closely enough.
