KQ's Aunt and Uncle gave us a roomba vacuum...you know, the kind that does all of the work by itself!

KQ's Aunt said she wanted to sell their vacuum and I offered to buy it not knowing it was one of those robot ones. So, they just gave it to us because they had never used it.

I've seen those things advertised, and I'm curious -- where does the dirt go? The vacuums I know have these vacuum cleaner bags that fill up with dirt. The roomba is so small; how can it hold the dirt? My best guess it that it eats all the dirt it can find, then goes under the bed or lifts up the edge of the rug and vomits it all out where you can't see it.

It's not that small. More space than one of those Dirt Devil handhelds. And it just goes until the floor is clean or it's full (or it runs out of battery), then it beeps to let you know it's done, and you open it and dump it out. [Big Grin]

The Roomba is more like a Dust buster that thinks. It has enough of a dirt catcher to hold a room's worth of regular dirt and dust.

If you have long hair or have pets that shed, the Roomba is not a good idea.

I loved mine, but traded it to a friend for an old Kirby vac. His household doesn't have pets and, at least so far, they seem to like the job that the Roomba does.

I thought it did a good job too, but I didn't like having to disassemble and de-fur it after every use.

So...it got a good home and I got a Kirby with all the attachments and a 2nd Kirby without the front piece for parts....

We agreed that if they want the Kirby back someday, all they have to do is ask. But for now, I think it was a win-win trade.

By the way, It does do a much better job than a dust buster would. It has sweepers and a rotating brush to get into all the edges. It's really quite remarkable.

We just used it to clean up all the pesky loose cat litter in the bathroom, because honestly, who wants to do that?

And the fur came out all in one nice clump for me, no problems. [Dont Know]

Hmm... I had problems with it getting wound around the ends of the roller, and around the middle of the roller, and well...everywhere.

I wonder if the newer models have a redesign that deals with that.

This shows the process for cleaning the brushes and mentions the issue of hair getting wrapped around the axles.

I gather that the new models don't share this problem.

Great company, I-Robot. I really like them.

But you're right, maybe they don't like me.

I think the problem is in my being an early adopter of technology. If I'd waited, the newer Roombas would've done a better job for long-haired me, long-haired Dana, and our long-haired dog.

Kata, it's cute. But I doubt it can handle a major spill. So I'm not convinced it's all that useful.

It can mop your floor, though, to keep it clean. That is useful enough in and of itself.

Spills aren't everyday occurences, and you can clean those up with some paper towels. In any case, it can clean up the sticky mess left behind after you've soaked up all the liquid.. And maybe it CAN handle a major spill.

If it could handle major spills, it would've been in the demo. All it showed being cleaned up were dry spills.

I gotta say, those look pretty attractive. I'd want a scheduler one, so it would just do the floors twice a week. Of course, I'd have to keep the floors picked up then.

And actually, I'd need two, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Then I could be the ultimate in lazy. But in reality I'm too cheap to spend that much on a vacuum. And I don't think I could bring myself to use the scooba thing on my hardwood floors. Bleach? Nope.

Yeah... I don't have kids, so spills are rare.

A very messy apartment and dirty floors, though, are quite common. [Smile]

And we have no kids to blame it on. We're just messy. *sigh*

I thought I'd just say that we're still enjoying the Roomba. Ems just decided to play Hansel and Gretel with her crumpet on the living room carpet (apparently she was only half-a-crumpet hungry), so we sat on the couch and vaccumed by remote control. [Big Grin]
