That Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a remake of an old Hitchcock movie from 1941 with Carole Lombard? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033922/

I had no idea!

This has been your useless fact for the day. Anyone got any more?

quote:
Sophisticated New York couple David and Annie Smith have an unusual marriage with an inordinate number of rules and regulations. One rule entitles them to ask each other one question per month which the other must answer completely honestly. Annie asks David if he would marry her again if he could have the time over again and David confides that he misses his freedom and so probably wouldn't. Later that day, an official from the town where they got married calls to see David. He explains that owing to a state boundary dispute, all couples married between 1936 and 1939 in the county where not legally married. David decides to have fun with this fact, but unbeknown to him, the county official calls to see Annie too and disaster results.
It's the same name, but it doesn't sound like it's a remake.

Useless information:

Curiosity killed the cat. And I just filled all my tires with curiosity.

I thought Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a TV show back in the day...

Ok, useless fact:
Charlemegne is French for Charles the Great.

That doesn't seem to make sense to me. It did last night, but now it doesn't.

Curiosity killed the cat.

I'm with you so far.

I just filled all my tires with curiosity.

Doesn't this say you filled your tires with whatever killed the cat? Like in Air or something? Shouldn't it be that your tires killed the cat for the joke to be correct? Or that your tires or car are "curiosity"? Basically, what's curiosity in the statement?

Anyways....

[derail off]

Did you know that the city name of Montreal came from the fact that the mountain in the city was names Mount Royal?

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

No. Didn't know that.

And I didn't read as complete of a synopsis of the old movie as Amanacer did, so I didn't even know the answer to my useless question!

Imagine that!

Did you know that the other half of the battle is violence?

And now you know!

Did you know that "Vermont" means "Green Mountain"?

Of course you did.

Did you know that "Boca Raton" means "Rat Mouth"?

Now why would anyone decide that is a good name for a town?

Did you know that "Flushing Queens" is the name of a neighborhood in New York and not the name of a gay plumbing company?

Sure you did.

Did you know that there are four chemical elements named after the small Swedish village of Ytterby? They are erbium, terbium, yttrium, and ytterbium.

Did you know that, aside from a five-year period of Nazi occupation, the Dutch throne has been held continuously by women since 1890? They are Queen Wilhelmina (1890-1940, 1945-48), Queen Juliana (1948-80), and Queen Beatrix (1980-present).

Did you know that Rio de Janeiro was once the capital of Portugal? It happened in 1808 when the Portuguese royal court fled Portugal for fear of invasion by Napoleon, and remained there for thirteen years. This period marks the only time in history when a European nation was ruled from a city in the Americas.

No it doesn't, although this piece of urban lore is often repeated. Ratón does not mean "rat"; it is a false cognate. Ratón means "mouse"; rata means "rat".

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Oh! Mouse Mouth. Well, that's very different.

Never mind.

It is! Mice are little and cute. Rats are large turds with feet.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*dryly* Clearly you have never lived in a place infested with mice. Mice are only cute when in a cage. [Razz]

Posted by Amanecer (Member # 4068) on :

Rats can also be quite cute when in a cage. And they're much smarter than mice. [Smile]

Rats make very friendly, intelligent, cuddly pets. If you can get over the tails. I didn't think I would be able to, but I fell in love with my family's first pet rat.
