I know we have several experienced sewers here. I'm brand-new, but need to make a simple curtain/cover for a skylight in our bedroom. During the day it casts a hellish square of sunlight on the bed that makes it impossible to nap and heats the room up. Anyway, I know how to design and sew the curtain in a simple manner, but what kind of material would be best? Thanks!

If you can get the kind of fabric that has an insulated (a thin layer of foam, I think) backing, that should help with keeping out the heat.

Ack! Sunlight! If it were MY bedroom, I'd just paint the skylight black and be done with it.
Horrible things, skylights.
Oh, and I send my sewing out to the seamstress, so I am of absolutely no help at all. At this point, I'm posting reflexively.

There's a material that blocks UV rays. You can use that to dim the light, and choose whatever pretty fabric you like for decorative purposes. Just "flatline" it together before you sew (meaning, sew the layer pieces individually together before you sew the curtain seams.)

Yeah the foam fabric stuff would be good, or maybe something think and appolstry like (it's usually on big rolls instead of on bolts).

Is this kind of material going to be available at someplace like Wal-Mart, or will I need to go to a fabric store you think? Sorry for more questions, but I honestly don't have much of a clue here.

Since I never shop at Wal-Mart if I have any alternative at all, I wouldn't know. I always get fabric at fabric stores or online (except when I get it at yard sales.)

You know, I would love to not shop at Wal-Mart. That place makes me angry every time I go and I loathe everyone there. Mr. Opera and I have brainstormed to think of where else we would get everything, but sadly around here it's about our only option unless I drive over 30 minutes. Lack of variety in stores is one of the few things I dislike about living out here.

Wow, our nearest Wal-Mart is very far away-- because people don't want them in communities here. They're trying to build one in Tujunga, but latest polling numbers show that if voters have their way, Wal-Mart will be blocked 78% to 22%.

If it were me, I'd take some styrofoam panels, cut them to size, and prop them up in the opening on push-pins. Then I'd cover it all up with something pretty, and it wouldn't matter much what it was made of.
It'd be easy to take back down if I wanted to open it back up again, too.
