I hate television executives. They know I'm a sucker, and that with a cheesy gimmick they can con me into watching their stupid new sitcom. And the thing that sucks is, they're right.

So there's a new show starting Monday, September 19th. I have a terrible feeling that the only thing that will really distinguish it from every other crappy sitcom ever made is how banal and irritating it will be. But it offers the promise of a fusion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Freaks & Geeks, so I'm probably going to watch it, head hung in shame the whole time.

If you want to see what I'm talking about, GO HERE and click on "Watch the Extended Trailer. Then pity me.

It's got NPH...and NPH can do no wrong.

Yes, that includes Starship Troopers.

I've got to admit he did have some funny lines in the trailer.

Still, I have a bad feeling about this...

Was Bob Saget narrating? Anyway, if it wasn't for my committment of not watching anything on CBS, that might be pretty funny.

While I get attached to characters, I rarely get attached to actors.

Alyson Hannigan != Willow Rosenberg
Jason Segel != Nick Andopolis

I'm happy for Alyson Hannigan though - I'm glad she's working.

I'm glad she's working too. Still this kills my dream of a Buffy spin off with "Willow 'n Faith's Slayer School"

We're on a writers' forum, and I think it's safe to say that people here have more respect than the average American for a writer's contribution to a successful stage, television or film production. And that's a good thing. But you can't discount the value of a really good actor on such a production. Sure, Buffy and F&G wouldn't have been any good without Joss or Judd. But even they would admit that Alyson and Jason are amazing actors who brought bits of themselves to the roles that were written for them. Alyson Hannigan isn't Willow, but Willow would have been a very different character if she'd been played by Ashlee Simpson. Even great dialogue wouldn't have worked nearly as well in the hands of lesser actors. Really brilliant characters are nearly always collaborations between good writers, directors and actors.

If Joss Whedon wrote a movie that starred Ben Affleck and Madonna, I may not expect it to come off as well as Firefly, but I'd still want to see it. And when I hear that two actors who I respect from their previous work are going to be working together, even if they're going to be under the control of lesser writers, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to see what they do with their new roles.

If you want to see what BtVS would have been like with a very different actress playing Willow, check out the Unaired Original Pilot (1/2 hour).

Oh, and I've had my eye on "How I Met Your Mother" since it was announced. Looks great!

I had a crush on Neil Patrick Harris in kindergarten, now doctor's do little for me (at least not just being a doctor)

Wow, that pilot was fascinating. I wonder if that girl that they had playing Willow is on any psychotropic medications. Or if she has voodoo dolls of Alyson Hannigan hanging around her house on nooses. I can't imagine being the only cast member dropped before making a show that becomes such a cultural icon. I don't think I'd sleep for the rest of my life.

Sounds like a great challenge for Joss. Y'know, he's written a silent episode of Buffy, and a musical episode... now, try to write something that'd still be interesting despite having really bad actors...

HOLY CRAP!

Fox is making another show that I'm now going to have to watch for, more or less the exact same reasons.

Check out the two guys on the far left.

Buffy/F&G fusion #2, premeiring at the exact same time next monday. Smeggin' hell.

So has anyone seen How I Met Your Mother? I hate to admit it, but I've seen every episode. It's pretty dumb, but it's funny. I wish I could say I didn't like it, but I can't deny that it makes me laugh.

Please don't tell anyone. [Blushing]

I thought this was going to be some gay rights thread.

Willow! noooooo

I couldn't stay away from the first Buffy/F&G movie fusion (Linda is just so cute), so I probably will watch these as well.

Joss said he will watch one and TiVo the other. Didn't say which one, though.

BTW, anyone else excited about the big hints Joss has been dropping about a possible new movie/series set in the Buffyverse?

I haven't checked these interviews for Serenity/Buffyverse spoilers, so read at your own risk. [Smile]

quote:
Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, told SCI FI Wire that he definitely plans to revisit the "Buffyverse" in a future, unspecified TV project. "I think it's realistic," Whedon said in an interview while promoting his upcoming SF movie, Serenity. "I like my chances. But it is absolutely still too amorphous for me to make any kind of announcement about it. I'm out there trying, and there's other people trying, to put it together. But until something falls in place, I really can't say."

Whedon is especially keen on doing a movie centering on the vampire character of Spike (James Marsters). "Let's say it's a good jumping-off point," he said. As for Marsters' reported comments that he is growing too old to play the eternally youthful former bloodsucker, Whedon said: "Well, we're working. We're trying. I know. ... James is in very good shape. Keep working out, James."Scifi.com

quote:
You spoke to Tim Minear about writing and directing the Spike movie. Where do things stand?

Things stand that all of the art guys — the people who would be involved artistically — have been trading phone calls going, "Wouldn't this be cool? Wouldn't this be cool?" We don't have a paradigm set up yet. We don't have anything solid to announce. I'm just making sure that the creative people I need are in place before I set up a whole deal and then James Marsters goes, "Gosh, you know? That's kind of behind me now." Or [if] I don't have a writer I can trust, because I don't have time to do it all myself; I need one of my peeps. And there's no greater peep for something like this than Mr. Minear. I'm optimistic that I will actually have something to say in the near future, but at this point it's still me and my buddies going, "Wouldn't it be cool?"

Can you tell us if you've spoken to anyone aside from James about appearing in the movie?
Yes, I have.

Amy Acker?

Yes, I have. Well, you know, I see Amy a lot, I see Alyson [Hannigan] a lot and Alexis [Denisof]. I've spoken to a couple of people just because we're making conversation, and they don't hate the idea. The worst thing that could happen is that somebody would be too busy because, as we know, all of my alumni are taking over the world.

Do you see Alyson/Willow being a part of it?

You know, if I get a chance to use Alyson, I'll use Alyson. That's a given. There's no maybe about that. The maybe is, does she have time? And if she does have time, shouldn't she be busy doing Veronica Mars, where we need to know more about her character?
