My aunt has been putting my name around the office of the Catholic school we both used to work at, and I just picked up a tutoring client! He's a 5th grader (much easier to work with), and his mom wants me through the end of the year! He will come to my place instead of me having to go to him, so I can do it right after school and still have my evening hours free, and his mom has no problem with the baby because "he loves babies and babies love him." He mostly needs reading and writing help, and except for math that's what I'm most comfortable tutoring in. She wants me several times a week for a few hours, and will pay me $15 an hour instead of my usual $12 (I offered the usual rate, she didn't think it was fair), which is what I normally charge for kids his age who will be with me long-term.

It's the perfect job, the mother is nice, the kid is eager to do well, just needs a little catch-up and some study skills (he switched from an Armenian school to a much more rigorous Catholic school), and it will even leave my evenings free for other kids. Well, heck, yeah. Even here in Fresno, the going rate for private tutoring is $15 to $20 per hour now, and everything (except maybe gasoline) is cheaper here than it is in your area.

Well, lma, I'm cheap. I usually charge $15 to $20 an hour for my shorter-term clients, but like to give my long term clients (over age 10) a discount. (Younger kids I charge more for, because they usually can't focus as well.)

I never heard of an Armenian school, and since it was in the same sentence as Catholic I made the leap it must have to do with theology, not nationality.
I'm sure everyone else knows what an Armenian school is and I look like a huge fool.

It does actually have to do somewhat with theology-- the school he was actually in was run by Armenian Brothers-- [edit: got it-- Mekhitarist Fathers' School] (There's one run by Armenian Brothers and one by Armenian Sisters in the area, although they're both co-ed-- go figure. ) In any case, Armenian Catholic (which is slightly different and separate from Roman Catholic, although I believe they take guidance from the Pope.) Most Armenian schools in this area go either up to 3rd grade, 4th grade, 6th grade, or 8th grade, and most students transfer to parochial schools after that. Some of the primary instruction in the early grades especially is in Armenian, which makes for a very interesting switch when they go to mainstream Catholic schools. So while you were partially wrong, you were partially right.
Oh, and there's no way you would have known that I happen to live in an area that's the relocation center for Armenians in America. I only worked 3.4 hours this week over three days, and made $51-- enough for haircuts for both of us and Serenity tomorrow night.
Next week I will probably work more, but even as it is (they skipped two days), I'm still bringing in more than I have in a LONG time and feel like I'm contributing.
My husband made me a handy Excel timesheet that I plug times and hours into, and it calculates my total hours and the charge per day and the total charge. It's teh awesome. I just printed it up and handed it to the mother, no problems, no hassle (except for finding change.)
