Hey.

Language.

"Hey.

Language. "

Did I miss an edit, or did I miss the insulting language?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I don't like reading that word in the title.

If you lived in Michigan you would applaud my restraint.

If you knew how much I dislike your language you'd applaud mine. [Razz]

Alright, since Ramdac is being particularly obscure... derail time.

Of the words in this thread title and original post, the one in the title isn't the one I'd thought would be controversial. So, something I've wondered for a while: Why is that word (using D*** for grins) unacceptable? It's implications aren't solely, or even predominantly, religious. There is no diety's name being taken in vain preceeding it. Is D*** word more offensive than any other run of the mill curse (from bloody or crap all the way upthrough the spectrum)?

Just a curiostiy about a random observation I've seen.

KQ cannot deem a word unacceptable, FYI. But she can deem it offensive, to herself, in the context of a thread title.

And I think that if there were another profanity in a thread title, it might get a similar reaction as well.

As for why it's offensive to some...well, profanity is arbitrary. Just like language, ultimately.

To you. It's just not nice, it's a word I was taught not to say, or even think, and I don't like to read or hear it, either.

indeed

KQ: I did not intend to offend you but it's the kind of thing no one can predict, especially with the inconsistency of being offended by the "D***" in the title but having no problem with the "Hell" I used in the first post....

Not trying to be advasarial.....

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I had a problem with the "Hell", too. But it wasn't in the title where I can read it without even opening the thread.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(And I don't think it's the kind of thing "no one can predict." I thought this was a family forum?)

Posted by tern (Member # 7429) on :

I would say that it's highly foreseeable that on a family forum on the official site of an outspokenly Mormon writer, that someone would be offended by a mild profanity.

And i thaught the offense was at the use of a Planeteer's name in a title. [Dont Know]

r u Canadian?

I don't know how to put this without it coming off like an attack but this site is not only for those with children and the extremely religious, it is also for writers and wordsmiths. the "D***" in the title was not to inflame or provoke. it was meant to show extreme displeasure with the current regime of the government of the City of Detroit. simply titling it "gosh Kwame is a meany" wouldn't accurately reflect my feelings on this. Again, I have the utmost respect for the parents that post on this site and (despite my lack of faith) for those with strong religious convictions.

Ramdac and ketchupqueen... I ran into something like this a few months ago. I made a joke that one of the members didn't like. I stood my ground because it was a joke, not real. In the end we came to agree that she would back down and I would avoid that certain joke in the future. [Smile]

Ramdac, if you want to say that in your thread, fine. I don't think it's forbidden. But if you put it in the TITLE, everyone has to read it whether they want to or not. Titles are a special case.

Rather than arguing about appropriateness of language, why don't you just tell us why you're angry. Unless this thread is supposed to be a Michigan members only club?

Right, and when I sweep the dirt under the rug its actually gone too.

(Not that I necessarily disagree with you KQ)

I just caught this, I can't believe he won!

That is friggin ridiculous! I have lost all faith, if there was any left, in the City of Detroit. What is wrong with those people?!

Their Mayor fritters away their money, cuts police and uses city funds to buy a luxury SUV for his wife and they elect him back into office over an Archer clone? Archer was great for Detroit, I can't believe they wouldn't elect someone who was practically his protege, over Kwame.

This blows my mind.

Now my family has to live up to its pledge to never go to Detroit again, unless it's to the Joe.

hey, I don't know if anyone would be interested in this, but just yesterday I passed out a survey in which I asked "Do you consider the word 'damn' offensive" (and excuse me for using it in its entirety). The survey also included questions about if the person considers him/herself religious, age, level of education, gender, and income level. If ya'll are interested in the results, let me know and I'll post them on here once I get them tallied. :-)

Seriously though, what criteria were the people of Detroit using when they went to the polls?

I'm still flabbergasted, two days later.

I think the only criteria was that they be a complete idiot with absolutely no knowledge of the political process.
