What do you think of when you hear about Apocalypse? Help me think here. I have an assignment for my Typography class in which we have to design four mail stamps using type and graphics. I'm done with War, and I'm working on Pestilence. I'm using all my skills on Adobe Bridge and Google to find images that portray my theme, any suggestions or images that you guys have may be very useful in making me think and be creative with the material I receive from you guys. As always, I'm not asking for you guys to do my hmk, I'm just asking for help in finding materials to do it. My main task is designing the stamps and that is what I am doing. Please help me turn on the light in my head.

For banging my head? That's how I got war done.

Have you considered looking at the original description in the Bible? "And behold, I saw a white horse", and so on. Considerable power in that imagery.

I'm looking more into the actual meaning of the word.

Pestilence done!
Next up is Famine.

And yes, I did pick the theme myself. I find it pretty morbid but I believe it to be a very good theme.

Splendid! For Famine, perhaps you could go with some of those images of starving POWs from WWII? Or more recent famine victims in Africa, if you prefer.

Africa would get the point across more effectively me thinks, but looking at those images makes me cry. I'll just have to bite the bullet for picking such a morbid theme, I guess.

Wow, this sounds like a really cool assignment. Good luck!

Help me please! I'm having a hard time with death! I don't want to go into Rotten.com for pictures of dead people and such!

Good Omens.

Actually, I think of the picture of the child from the Vietnam War.

Edit:

The picture in this link is graphic: child fleeing napalm

I'd go subtle with death. Do a pic of a doorway.

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

My thoughts turn to those old dancing skeletons that were so popular during the Black Death. With maybe a tasteful banner reading "Memento mori". How big are these stamps?

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Mexican Day of the Dead imagery might be fun, as well. On a good day, Death wears a sombrero.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Stamps are 6 x 7.5 inches. I'll use that day of the dead thing too, thanks Tom!

Death is the last one! Come on, inspire me!

Angel with metal wings.

Done!! Thanks Tern!

Alt, any chance you'll be posting these? I'd love to see what you've put together.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Sure Noemon, I was going to do it last night but I was on the urge to get these done so I didn't post them here. Sorry, anyhoot here they are:

http://www.etemenanki.info/apocalypse.html

EDIT: For some reason I cannot access the site, maybe because I'm at my school's computer and not my lappy? Can anyone access the main site, http://www.etemenanki.info ?

War: Picture Geaorge W. Bush in military gear, on aircraft carrier, with big words on banner behind him--"Mission Accomplished"

Famine: Picture of runway with thin models crossing it.

Pestilence: Flock of chickens

Death: Picture of the New Orleans Convention Center, or Brown--ex-head of Fema.

Armagedon America Style.

How are the chickens America's fault, Dan?

[Razz]

(Incidentally, I'd put a picture of the Olsen twins in for pestilence. Them, or maybe Hilary Duff.)

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

I get the chickens and all, but can you guys access the site?

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

It redirects me to: http://www.etemenanki.info/angel/ but then there's almost nothing on the front page except for a couple of link in the bottom right hand corner. Uh, most of them don't work either. And the "apocalypse" page shows up with "404 Error" in very nice fonts.

Posted by SenojRetep (Member # 8614) on :

I get the 404 Error with this directive:
"You entered a wrong URL or that page no longer exists. There's also the possibility that Altariel of Dorthonion ate it. You can go back to Etemenanki or you can drop and die. "

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Oh, the 404 error wasn't the Pestilence or Death one?

(Chickens==modern mania for bird flu. We could replace with a picture of Viagra. That is America's Pestilence)

Oh Corwin, you have to click on the graphic at the bottom right in order to access the site. I'll fix the images now. Thanks.

I'm getting red x's for the pictures. [Frown]

I'm noticing that its telling me that the pictures are corrupt...that's odd. I printed them out of a friend's printer yesterday and he didn't get any error messeges when he tried to print them from the site. I'll look into it when I get home around two hours from now.

Those are the image URLs, I'll disable hotlink protection from Hatrack so you guys can see them.

That's weird though, I had never had this problem before.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

I like them a lot, but they'd all be a lot better if you significantly toned down your use of drop shadow (for instance using local, feathered lightness/tone alteration beneath the letters instead to make the letters stand out).

The links don't work for me...

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Whoa, Fugu! How could you view the images? I just got home on my Lappy where they were created and uploaded and I still cannot see them! I'll reupload them and maybe they'll work now.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Well, I have reuploaded death and it still doesn't work. I'll just have to re-optimize it.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Death works. I re-optimized it in PS CS2 and it did the trick. I'll be working on the others and I'll post when I'm done uploading.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Done. You guys should be able to view them now.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Cool stuff Alt. I think that Death is my favorite of them.

I bet some utter bastard of an atheist would be up in arms about the crosses on them, though. OMG state-supported Christianity! [Big Grin]

For myself, I rather like the association of the biggest religious symbol around with the saddest fact of life. Makes you think, eh?

I can't get any of those pages to load. IE keeps saying that "The page cannot be displayed" after trying for about 30 seconds.

In fact, I can't get any part of your site to load.

Oh, I didn't do it because of the crosses. It's a graveyard. And I'm not in state university which I think was implied; I attend a private art college.

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

I meant, if these were really to be used as stamps, then the motif would evidently have state sanction. And I don't see where the crosses being from a graveyard is relevant : they are the main religious symbol of a large, even dominant sect; therefore they do not belong on a government publication. Or so my hypothetical atheist would argue.

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Ah, that's true. I forgot theses were itty bitty stamps.

Posted by theCrowsWife (Member # 8302) on :

I had a very sarcastic reply to KoM, but the internet ate it. Probably just as well.

May your heart be filled with peace and joy!

I think this idea is just too cool! I want to see real stamps made like that! Why are stamps always so happy, anyway? Why can't we acknowledge that darker side of existence in a stamp sometimes?

For pestilence I totally would have done bird flu, of course, but I like your images. I would have had all the concepts relate to things in the future. It's scarier that way. [Big Grin]

Mel, KOM always reminds me of the story about the devotee of Krishna who was such an atheist. He was shocked when he landed in heaven (okay Vrndavana, I think it was called) with Krishna after he died. But Krishna explained that he (the atheist) was there because he thought about Krshna constantly since he was denying his existence with such vehemence all the time. To be so against a thing is the same as to worship it, because you give it such a central position in your life and thoughts. So maybe KOM will be there to greet us when we arrive. :-P
