I just discovered today that one of the local school districts has taken the entire week of for Thanksgiving. I've never heard of such a thing before - when I was in school we got Thursday and Friday off, and that was it. I was wondering, then, if I've just been off on another planet somewhere and school kids getting a whole week off for Thanksgiving is a common thing.

Kids here get Wednesday, too, but not the whole week.

My kids get Wednesday as well (first time I think they have got that) -- but I hear another local school district is also taking off MONDAY -- so they get Wednesday through Monday.

I think they are lining up teacher in-service days and such with holidays to make breaks in a stretch.

lma, that hasn't made it here yet, but it wouldn't surprise me to see. Public schools have an awful lot of off days for the kids.

We get Wed-Fri here.

Every school system is different, usually the state mandates how many total days they have to be in session but each district can set its own calendar. For example, the Jefferson County system had a whole week for fall break this year. My kids school system only took 3 days for fall break, but has a longer Christmas break.

We get the whole week. There is also a week off in late September and one in the Spring. School started August first, though, and no one got veteran's day. It's an extended school year, with slightly longer breaks.

We get Wednesday through Friday off here. I wish we got the whole week. As a teacher, Monday and Tuesday are a waste anyway. Parents start pulling their kids out of school the friday before Thanksgiving as it is. By Tuesday, I have maybe 2/3 of a class and they are acting like vacation is already started. Most teachers show a movie anyway (including me since we had just finished the book I showed the movie of).

We get Thurs-Fri. Some holidays depend on the weather. At Christmas, the number of days we get off is dependent on how many hurricane days we've missed. We've been lucky this year, so we'll get the whole week before Christmas off. *knock wood*

I nanny two kids who go to a public elementary school in Boulder, and they got the whole week off.

Our school district (in Iowa) has Wednesday through Monday off. I think Monday is a teacher inservice day or something.
