I have a laptop that I used for less than 2 years before it broke. Basically, the thing the power cord plugs into in the back came loose, and when I had is soldered back on, soldering material got on the motherboard. I've been told it's pretty much hopeless to fix, and have since gotten a new computer.

Now it's sitting taking up space in my closet. I am wondering if it would be worth the trouble to see if there is part of it that could be easily salvaged and sold. Should I just suck up the loss and throw it out? Any input would be appreciated. [Smile]

ebay ebay ebay.

If the virgin mary on burnt toast can sell, i'm sure someone will want to salvage the parts that are in good working order. at the very least, it's worth a shot. even if it only goes for $50, lets say, that's more than you'd have throwing it out.

Lissande and Dagonee, I hate you.

I came in this thread just to sing. [Razz]

I don't get the song reference.

Anyway, who told you it's basically unfixable? Solder on the motherboard is not necessarily a fatal problem unless in the process you shorted something really expensive like the processor or the entire power supply. In which case, yeah, it'd cost more to fix than it's worth. At least for you, who don't have spare parts lying around.

My personal preference for things like this is to donate them to the local High School. They can learn how to fix them, or cannibalize for parts. If you want to, and itemize already, you can take a tax deduction. But really, if it's worthless to you, donate it.

But first thing to try. Open it, clean up the solder, and see what happens.

And please, people! It's not "early" (ur-LEE)! It's ur-LIE!

My favorite version by Great Big Sea.

Of course.

Huh. I don't care for that version at all. But then, I grew up with an old recording of it. Guthrie, maybe?
