Hey cool! I spent last summer working on the 3D graphics for an upcoming IMAX documentary, Roving Mars, at a local studio (it's amazing that anyone in this little town is doing this stuff!), and the film opens... next week? January 26th, I think.

In the images that go along with that article, I worked on the texture maps (particularly the big crater, Endurance Crater).

Y'all should check it out! It's only 40 minutes, and our graphics are like a third of the film, and they're pretty darn cool, if I may say so. ;-)

Okay! It's out, the premiere went great (I hear, I couldn't make it this weekend), Frank Marshall said my former boss was one of the most talented people he'd ever worked with... and the reviews are mostly positive!

Here's a snippet from a subscriber-only NYT.com op-ed:

Your Ticket to Mars
By JOHN TIERNEY

There are three reasons to rush to see "Roving Mars":

1. It's the best Imax movie ever.

2. You will be one of the first humans to know exactly what you'd see
joy riding across Mars.

3. If the box-office gross per screen is high enough on this opening
weekend, you could see someone really joy riding on Mars before you
die.

...

The worst part of all this is that I got quoted in the local paper, and the reporter left enough crucial words out of it that it sounds like I had no idea what was going on with the production. And he has me working there over twice as long as I actually did. D'oh. This is why I'm afraid of reporters. [Razz]

But overall, whee! My first feature film! [Big Grin]

Now to find out if the Omnimax theater at the Museum of Science and Industry is one of the screens running this... they should be. Awesome cool news Zeugma!

I wonder if the Science Center in St. Louis will have it on the OmniMax screen..

Cool! It isn't at my IMAX theater yet, but I'm sure it will eventually as the IMAX is in a planetarium!

What did you guys use? Maya?

Thanks guys!

Human, there's a thread about the technical details over at CGTalk: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=313692

Short answer: Lightwave. I hadn't touched it before starting there, though, so I spent most of my time in Photoshop working on texture maps. Woo!

What is your name at CGTalk? I'm jamesreynolds. I never read or post though. I have a brother who lives there, and a friend who lurks heavily and they point out the cool stuff. [Big Grin]

All I can say is wow! I can't wait to see it!

I go by my real name, Aja, but I don't spend much time outside the News and Discussions threads, and usually only keep up with the thread about my school. It's a huge community, lots of really great stuff here and there, but there are other forums more suited to character animators out there. [Smile]

I just saw it and loved it. If it's still playing this Thursday at my local Imax, I plan to see it 2 or more times. [Cool]

*can't wait until it comes out on DVD*
