I just have to vent off steam here for a minute...bear with me.

I belong to a forum started by some friends of mine, technically admin-ed by my best friend. He and the moderators are being really tough on stuff that kind of makes me mad.

Anytime a topic gets off-topic, it gets locked. They never give it a chance, or do the Hatrack thing and change the title. They also ban people for the strangest reasons. A good new friend of mine got banned just because the mods disagreed with what he did, and none of it violated the TOS.

Also, some people there think I'm being really pompous and stuck up about things...I don't think I am. I'm a logical, analyzing person, so if I see like a typo in an otherwise great post, I might say something about it. I'm a perfectionist, I guess you could say, and I just want things to be right. They also don't think I'm being sensitive to other people's emotions. I always try to see both sides of the issue and they're expecting me to always agree with them.

Thanks for listening, Hatrack. You guys are really great people and know how to run my kind of forum.

I come from the other extreme. The forum I frequent is basically unmoderated. It's almost anarchy. There is one moderator, and in the six years of the forum's existence, the only things that he has done are delete the two furry threads (thankfully) and create a couple of stickies.

It's both a decently sized forum and a close knit community, so we end up moderating ourselves. Spammers get flamed. If that's ineffective, they get ignored. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. I can see why a slightly more moderated system would be valuable, but I kind of like the freedom we have.

The prevailing sentiment is: You chose to be here; if you're offended, leave. Mods won't fight your battles for you.

I don't even count forums that are not on my 10 day list.

Wait. Are you telling me that there are OTHER forums out there?

Yikes! I'm going to be busy!

Bob! How could you?!

I am so offended by that kind of holier-than-thou-ness. [Mad]

I have another forum that I am a mod for but I wasn't always. The forum is for a Star Wars Galaxies fansite, it was (and I think it may still be) the best fansite for SWG. We had some good moderators, they closed topics when they needed and banned those that needed to be banned (It didn't happen too often) but as the game started to slow down and the devs did quite a few things that the public didn't care for, people began to leave. And while the moderators were there for a long time, slowly they started to leave, along with a good amount of the active members. The forum finally got down to maybe 10-20 we moderated ourselves qutie well. We still talked about the game and helped people that stopped in and asked for help but it wasn't nearly as big as it had been. Well then with different expantions people would come back for a little bit or to stay and new people would come too. We had new member join who has rather annoying and posted sometimes just for his post count, he would post in long dead threads for no other reason to increase his post count. With no moderators left, I emailed the webmaster and asked him to make me and another member that I held in high respect, moderators. He did but the other member, decided not to use his moderating powers much, (since he didn't come to the forum more then once a day or so) so now I am the only moderator at a forum.

Sorry, I just was kind of venting, I am sad that one of my favorite forums is slowly dieing.
