Well, look. I think I made my feelings on pirating Paradox games quite abundantly clear in the HoI2 thread. And then he has the sheer, unmitigated gall to send me a PM, requesting that I give him Vicky and CK for free! Smileys cannot express how pissed I am! Not only is he a thief, he wants me to be his accomplice in stealing from the games company I revere above all others? Well, sod that!

I own Sinopec. And, I aim to capture more. You could start with a trade deficit.

Well, he is a Commie. He probably figures that he is liberating the games for the people. You know, 'cause theft isn't theft, property is theft.

Wait. Now Blayne=clod? [Confused]

I need a scorecard.

And clod, I kind of think that that response and that language was uncalled for. Twice. I am never stiff-necked about apologising when I've given offense, but your "get off my ass, Tante! you ARE NOT welcome" does not make me feel moved to make amends. It makes me want to avoid you in the future.

And if you would just clue me in to your alternative screen names, I'd be glad to do just that.

I seriously doubt it. I think clod sprouts mischief when his mind gets bored - kind of like fertile land left unseeded during a growing season sprouts weeds.

Blayne. Please do us all a favor and hush. Your response is not appropriate for this forum. If you wish KOM would not make his grievance public, then perhaps you should not make your response public. Send him an email next time instead of cluttering hatrack with your foul language and ridiculous capital letters.

This is not how Hatrack is meant to operate. Everyone but you seems to realize this.

*Steps onto soapbox*

It is hard to get mad when we know Blayne is what, 12 years old, and we have already established that he does little in life other than sit in front of a computer playing games and griping about his lousy home life.

KoM doesn't like anyone so why are we surprised by his rant here? (but in your defense, unwanted spam is certainly something to rant about)

So the only thing new here is that clod went off on Tante. Did anyone see why? I missed it. Either way the response was inappropriate, clod, and you should stop acting like your username.

I'm 18...

I went to school in the town next to Rigaud, Hudson, Mount Pleasant Hitler Youth Camp and Westwood Senior High (whoops I meant Hudson High).

Dont you mean steps ON the soup box?

But ya a testimount of the failures of the Modern school system, I haven't learned barely a single word of french and they passed me through a french emmersion school.

What are you planning to do? I doubt you'll be able to make it through college in French if your French is as bad as you say. You've graduated high school. You say it's hard to find a job in a remote village where you don't speak the language. So are you going to learn French or move? Or just keep living off your parents?

I've already passed my first french semester, I only have 1 more to go and its easy. Level 1 Immigrant french, the work matters more then the listening.

Im in compsci, I'm going to be a game designer unless I switch to Liberal Arts, I've been second geussing myself alot lately. Originally I wanted to be an historian, but I got nagged out of it. Should never listen to parents ever again.

The difference was two hours; some of us do not check email every five minutes. And you knew perfectly well from earlier threads how I feel about Paradox and pirating. Moreover, this :

quote:
However... would you be able to send me Vicky/Crusadaer King? I promise to buy the strategy sixpack as soon as I get the money, I've never downloaded a game if I had the money for it instead as with X3, Bf2, Bf1942 etc etc all were bought with my own money.
looks very much like a response to that thread, and a particularly stupid one at that.

But that is in any case irrelevant. I do not think you have quite grasped how pissed I am at you. Johan and Paradox are the finest game copmpany ever to walk the Earth; they patch their products, listen to their fans, and make frocking excellent games. And you steal from them! You say you hate EA, and yet you do your best to undermine the good guys, who try to take gaming away from all that!

As an aside, my girlfriend has serious doubts about your manhood.

(As an aside to the aside, I wish she would log in herself and post from her own account, but I'm afraid she will beat me up if I don't let her write this. You should have seen what she started out with. Ai! Back off! I'm not getting myself banned over this, no matter how much you laugh!)

Think of all the great things that could happen! For example, look at Daniel Jackson.

That was completely unnessasary. Downloading a game one can't afford and able to do well in the sack are two completely different things, now I AM PISSED OFF AT YOU not ONCE IN THE ENTIRE TIME I'VE BEEN HERE have I seen such a low and deliberate insult to another forum member, you should've had the decency to NOT write it, let your gf write it so that Papa can ban her ass or if its with your account ban you. Now I do not wish to apologize for asking for it or to play with you which is a shame for we would've undoubtably had fun.

I demand that you recant or I will complain to Papa Janitor.

Blayne, this issue strikes me as black and white every time it arises:

Theft is theft. It doesn't matter what the reasoning is. I don't care if it's groceries to feed your starving family; if you take it without paying for it, especially when you KNOW you're supposed to, it's wrong. Laws exist for a reason. If you honestly intend to pursue a career as a game designer, you of all people should be hesitant to pirate the product of someone's blood, sweat and tears.

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

Well Blayne, if you really, really want to bring your use of forum PMs for purposes of pirating, to the attention of the mod - please do feel free. You might not like the results, but I really do hope you'll try it.

As for playing MP with you, I'd sooner invite Mishka. At least he pays for his games.

Look, Hoi2 I got from a friend we play LAN games, infact now that I think of it I probly only got 2 maybe 3 AT MOST from bittorrent and only to play their singple player. Multiplayer I go out and buy it. I bought BF Vietnam, CoD, CODUO, COD2, Starcraft I bought several times, Diablo, Diablo 2, Civilization II, ibid, III, etc etc.

I only downloaded Lineage II and stopped when I realized it was a cracked server. I bought a month subscription of WoW, I had everquest.

The only things I didnt flinch in DL are books because their hardcover is too expensive but I have bought the softcovers.

I download music but the kind I like is free anyways.

I have downloaded Civilization IV but only so I could play with my friends. And I will buy it when I get a partime weekend job.

I had downloaded EU2 but only to try it out I only played 3 games of it and never uninstalled it and never played it after.

I can't even remember the last game I downloaded that I still play. The games that I didn't buy I got from friends which I think is not the same thing as downloading, and according to the Piracy laws in Canada it is NOT ILLEGAL WHAT ONE DOES WIHT THEIR OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY!

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. There is a fundamental difference between copying something so that there are more in the world than there were before and stealing something so that you can have it but somebody else loses is.

Whether it's wrong or not is a different question, but saying that "theft is theft", meaning that copying software or music is exactly the same as stealing a stereo, is blatantly false.

The only difference I see is that when you steal from someone (e.g. a stereo), your theft has one victim; when you copy something without paying for it so that there are more than the world, your list of victims includes everyone who had a hand in creating (or supporting the creation of) the product in question, every legal user of the product, every future user of the product, and every future user of every subsequent version of the product.

You're right; this has nothing to do with your manhood. (though here KoM, my boyfriend, adds that "Yes it does -- he's not man enough to do without things he can't pay for!")But anyway, I personally apologize for what you have now convinced me is a misfire.

However, you also called my boyfriend a newb. If you lived with him, and saw how often he goes on this darn forum, you would see that, if anything, he is not a newb! If you don't recant that, I won't recant having serious doubts about your intelligence and perceptual abilities.

As I understand it, the only way to get on better terms with KoM would be to stop distributing pirated copies of those games, and perhaps to even convince those who have already downloaded your copy to delete it.

Personally, I don't play these games so I could care less. I only know that this bothers KoM, and if he's going to be bothered, it should be of my own doing, gosh-darnit!

I'm confident that I know more history then most people, I'm confident in my ability to argue test wise (my verbal ir horrible), and I'm confident in my ability to shoot down a F-35B in a J-10 [Big Grin]

I'm confident in video games but once I start losing sometimes it hits me psycologically and I give up once I start really losing and I feel there is no way to win.

However, I've been thinking of some things recently, helping people with their problems has finally rubbed off on me, I just... I can't explain it. I remember back in elementary school I was on good terms with everyone, there were no nerds or jocks, just us vs them (boys vs girls lol [Big Grin] )

But, throughout high school everything changed, I became a loner, I didn't like hanging out wiht people except Chris, Tiff, James and a few others playign Magic and 1 failed attampted at D&D. But things polarized all the people I could've hung out with became hostile and cruel, and my circle of close friends shrunk.

I graduated not going to any event, field trip or prom/dance. I tried to ask one girl but I was too shy.

Grade 9 was probly my peak of academic performance since i had a friend to compete with.

Then I graduated, Abbott barely accepted me due to many mishaps and confusion.

And now here I am, failed 4 course in total for the first time, 1 french, 1 gym, 1 linux, and 1 Visual Basic 6.0.

I wanted to go into History but was nagged out of it, I was told by my parents that there's no demand and my mom later on goes "you gave up too easily" and said something that pissed me off right afterwards.

I made some friends, mostly friends I could play games with, I joined a Student Newspaper and I review games (Halo was a disappointment btw). And I met some christians who are nice and are fun to hang out with.

I'm just feeling depressed these days. I'll move out probly after summer. Get rid of the distractions and try to focus on academia.

I have never Pirated Paradox games (except EU2 but I deleted it) and I am sorry for asking you for them. I am currently buying at GREAT AND TERRIBLE price Victoria and Crusader King.

EA is unpiratable they're... just evil.

As for Hoi2 I got that from a friend which he bought that is not pirating under Canadian law.

Is that okay?

If their laws still resemble Russia's, then copyright infringement may not be persecuted much. I mean, gee whiz, if it wasn't for bootlegs, who in the USSR would have heard of the Beatles?

I'm not awful, many people said that they think I'm not a malicious person, I just get paranoid sometimes. Sometimes as I look back, I wonder what I lost.
And your paranoia, that's what's ruining you!Attracting a member of the opposite gender is something that if you try too hard at, you'll fail. As Yoda once said, "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'." Nothing creeps us girls out more than a guy who's obviously desperate!

Don't focus on trying to date a girl or get her in bed. If you're chatting with her, just enjoy the chat itself. Girls like a good listener.

However, I do think that you'd do well to get a job. You'll get out of the house on a more frequent basis, meet new people, and have something to chat about besides whatever you're doing on your computer. Girls like a guy who has a rich, well-rounded life... But, don't let your lack of a job hold you back from flirting with a girl in the first place. Some of us modern women can pay for our own dinners, ya know.

Also, renew your efforts to learn la francais or stop whining and move to a town where people know English (yes, it can be done). Alternately, try online long-distance "dating". I don't consider it a real relationship if you've never met the person physically, but online dating might be good practice for (or actually turn into) the real thing. If anything it's low-pressure, which might combat some of your paranoia, ease you into things a little.

Calm down. Breath deeply. It may not seem like it now, but your time will come. (if it can come for me, it can come for anyone)

Do you go to any church, perhaps the one your christian friends go to (and may have invited you to already)? This makes me think of an article from The Onion .

If you make an honest effort to expand yourself socially, and thus improve your life in general, the dating thing may take care of itself.

Excuse me, but that is pirating. And I very, very much doubt that Canadian law differs so much from the rest of the world. Your friend bought the right to play the game, he did not buy the right to copy it out to all and sundry.

KoM is the only exception to that for me trust me. They're are many people whom I know are a88h0l3$ and aren't worth my time, trust me I don't beg for friends and no I am not christian I believe they're MIGHT be a God not I do not believe there is enough evidence to prove or disprove.

And also I do enjoy chatting with girls they're are some 2 dozen girls I consider from acquaintances to close friends. 2 in the latter most in the former.

I don't translate I just give them the english game because they cant get it period, they're own language would be comvenient, I'm learning Mandarin. Hi hao, Ni shunti hao ma?

As for "trying" that is the problem I try too little only twice I have made any significant attempts, both failed and were several years apart. One was because I was too shy and the second time I think I already explained a while back, she just wasn't interested.

I'll move out, I'll get a job and save up and move out. I'll move to Ste Annes where my college is. The only thing that might keep though is my computer I've heard somewhat to the effect that gift or not I don't think my parents will let me bring my OWN computer out of the house. I'm just going to have to save up extra money and buy a new one probly that will be my personal property.

King of Men, I did indeed look this up a while back it is not infringing on Canadian Copyright laws to give a copy of a game to a friend.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Here: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-42/

I can't find where it says the lawful owner of a game cannot make a copy or give away private property. So far everything mentioned applies only to music.

You couldn't have been looking very hard, then. Canada is a signatory to the WIPO Copyright Treaty, which protects computer programs as literary works. Can you copy a book and give it to a friend? I think not.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

And that means? Almosts sounds like that a company can't sell the game they themsleves made, I looked but it doesn't make sense.

Also what about the section about copying for private use? There's a certain lack of comprehension here.

What about copying pages of a book and distributing it to a class? Nearly all ym teachers do it. I got his game his ORIGINAL CD, where does it say its illegal to give away private possessions? Otherwise it'ld be illegal to giveaway gifts.

First, your "company can't sell the game they themsleves made" thing" is obviously nonsensical; since they hold the copyright, they're the ones with the right to produce or reproduce the work reserved to them.

There are significant exceptions for educational use, they're on the following page. That page also has an appropriate quotation, which constitutes almost all the fair use available in Canada wrt a computer program.

http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-42/179333.html#rid-179345

quote:
30.6 It is not an infringement of copyright in a computer program for a person who owns a copy of the computer program that is authorized by the owner of the copyright to
(a) make a single reproduction of the copy by adapting, modifying or converting the computer program or translating it into another computer language if the person proves that the reproduced copy is
(i) essential for the compatibility of the computer program with a particular computer,
(ii) solely for the person’s own use, and
(iii) destroyed immediately after the person ceases to be the owner of the copy; or
(b) make a single reproduction for backup purposes of the copy or of a reproduced copy referred to in paragraph (a) if the person proves that the reproduction for backup purposes is destroyed immediately when the person ceases to be the owner of the copy of the computer program.

The copyright doesn't just apply to the disc, that's just the medium. The copyright is on the work, the game itself. To keep an installed copy while giving away the game cd for someone else to install a copy with constitutes infringement of that copyright.

If he gave you his original disc, and didn't keep a copy for himself, that should be alright, right? (I'm no legal expert). From my limited understanding, you buy one copy of the game, you have a right to one copy of the game. You can do whatever you want with that one copy. Again, I'm speaking from no experience, but that's always been my understanding and I'd be interested if it turns out I'm mistaken.

EDIT: I just now really read fugus post, which I think says basically the same thing. [Confused] I'm no good at lawyer speak.

I read that part, it says one is allowed to make a copy for private use, to give away the original bought cd is not copyright infringement. I've only copied it to give to East Europeans and Chinese persons (there is no good plural).

And the interpretation is meant with music in mind.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

In fact I think it is perfectly legal (from my undertsanding taking a Intro to Law class) that keeping a copy for oneself yet giving away the original is perfectly okay and depends on intentions, I could take a Yu-Gi-Oh card copy it give it away and keep the copy for myself for sentimental value and that would not be considered fraud or conterfeit to KEEP it, to trade away that copy however would be (if its fake).

This is from 3 years of YuGiOh addiction.

No wonder you are failing your courses, if you can't read basic English. It says you are allowed to make a single copy for personal use, if you can prove that you destroy it as soon as you don't own it anymore. In this case, when he gives you the CD. Now, if he didn't keep a copy, that's different, although you might have said so in the first place and saved a lot of trouble.

Holy cow... are we actually looking up copyright laws? This is getting a little ridiculous. If the kid's friend bought the game and then make a copy for him, so what!? Lets all get off our high horses here please, there are far worse things in the world than copying a game for a friend. This seems like a "lets all smugly rag on a kid who writes english at a grade 2 level" thread, which really isn't all that nice (though I do admit it is midly entertaining). Too many boring people out there. Not really sure why I'm adding this in here. Just for the heck of it I suppose. If nothing else, you have my respect for putting up with all this. Not that I'm saying you're in the right, but that you haven't stormed off and made one of those annoying "Goodbye for now Hatrack" threads impresses me.

I can't think of a thread on Hatrack that has annoyed me more than this one. In the first place, it should have never existed. A personal beef af an individual nature shouldn't be aired in public, particularly while insulting the other party. Second, clod's insult to Tante was out of the blue, uncalled for and, frankly, puzzling. It also is the only direct insult that hasn't been apologized for, and I would add my voice to those demanding an apology. Third, it has been a long time since I've seen piling on of such magnitude. Geez, you think the guy had just posted about how he beat his wife, robbed a church, then ran over his puppy with a lawnmower. I mean, I deplore game piracy as much as the next person, but I don't think it's a capital offense. Talk about a dogpile! I admire Blayne for handling it so well.

Finally, I want to address the issue of low self-esteem and depression. It seems to me that there are those here on the board who have absolutely no clue whatsoever as to how difficult it is to live with a poor self-image. This response is coming from someone who has dealt with problems of depression and low self-esteem for a long time, and thanks to the help of my friends, is succeeding. Even admitting that you have bad self-esteem is incredibly difficult. To all those who find Blayne's lack of self-esteem repulsive, I say this: Before you judge, take a second to walk a mile in the other person's shoes. You have no idea what it's like to live with depression.

Your advice to "suck it up and quit whining" isn't helpful; it's as ludicrous as telling an alcoholic that the solution to their problem is simply not drinking. It may be true, but the alcoholic aready knows it's true--their problem is in implementing it. So you with the condescending "don't waste my precious time with your bad self-image" attitude aren't helping.

Everyone here at Hatrack has their own set of problems. Blayne has said that one of his is low self-esteem. Why don't we, as a community, focus on actually trying to help each other find solutions to their problems rather than telling them how juvenile and silly they are?

Even after Brian's well-written post, I can't just let this one go. Software copying isn't a "so what?" issue, for a lot of reasons. As someone who's made money from software development and sales, I can tell you that it is a serious issue that affects the livelihood of a lot of people.

It's precisely the "so what?" attitude that many people find incredibly disturbing, and not just because it's about software copying. "So what?" in many areas is a serious problem.

On this point, we agree. My previous post did little to address my feelings on the issue of software piracy. If this thread were solely a discussion of software piracy, then I would've posted something along the lines of Dagonee's post. But this thread encompasses something more serious than software piracy.

It started out as an uncalled-for attack (with a justifiable premise, but inappropriate on a public forum) on one of our members, followed by more and more insults being heaped upon this person by our fellow citizens of Hatrack. When you add into the mix a total lack of understanding of depresssion and low self-esteem, an issue that I am closely connected to, I had to respond, not necessarily in defense of Blayne's attitude concerning piracy, but in defense of the decorum that makes me continue to visit and love Hatrack, albeit mostly as a lurker.

I should've stopped this thread long ago. I apologize for not doing so. I let it go because there still seemed a hope of some reconciliation, and there was interspersed a fairly legitimate discussion of copyright, but that was a mistake. The original argument does not belong here (nor do several of the later comments).
