I am unable to remove "read only" from the Application Data directory on my computer. I right-click on "Application Data", go to Properties, and the Read Only button is half-checked, indicating (I think) that some files or directories in that directory are set to Read Only. I uncheck it, and apply the changes to "This folder, sub-folders, and files." It then goes and appears to be applying the changes.

But when I check it again, it's the same thing. Nothing's getting changed.

Any ideas what's going on here?

I can't help you, but I've had the same problem, on other directories. I hope someone can help.

Why do you want to do this? The application data folder has some files in it that should remain read-only. I'm sure windows or whatever application needs those files to be read-only is putting them back that way.

The problem is that some of my applications (namely Firefox and Thunderbird) are unable to write to their directories, so any changes I make die when I close the application.

I believe that the subfolders option doesn't always work on hidden directories. You may need to find the appropriate directories and click on them directly.

This is based on an incident around 5 years ago, so apologies in advance if it doesn't work. But it won't hurt anything that changing all the directories wouldn't.
