Apparently, the Republican part (parts of it, anyway) in Georgia wants to force businesses to make donations to the Boy Scouts. Or else, no state business. Fascinating! Linky.

They didn't say they would force businesses to donate to the Boy Scouts. They said they would not do state business with an organization that discriminated in its charitable donations.

Not that I agree with what they're doing, I don't but you should state the situation accurately. Personally, I don't think it should be the state's business what charitable contributions any organization does or doesn't make. And I do find them as hypocritical as the minority leader does when he says this:

quote:
Senate Minority Leader Robert Brown, D-Macon, said any move by lawmakers to dictate how a private business should spend its money flies in the face of what Republicans always have claimed to stand for.

either way, it is a dumb law. You can't punish someone for not giving to a particular charity.

I don't understand how you can discriminate in your charitable donations. I mean, every day I do not make a donation to the Boy Scouts. Am I discriminating?

Do you go on record for stating WHY you don't?

Not that I agree with this....I bet BoA wins in court if this law passes, eventually. [Big Grin]

So Bank of America is discriminating by not giving money to an organization that is discriminating?

I think I have found my new bank.

BoA is evil in general but this law is even more evil.

Discriminate in charity???

What happened to smaller government? Less interferance in the market?

Maybe the Republicans will vote this down, despite what the article says, and ultimately this will just a few crackpots...

Or maybe the Klan's Hitler's(*) Youth Outreach program will come with their hands out and sue when the state still does business with anyone (everyone) who turned them down.

Pix

(*) I claim immunity from godwin's law. I'm not comparing someone to hitler I'm giving a possible example of a youth group no one wants to support.

I am so glad I went to Boy Scouts in Hong Kong instead of the US. In Hong Kong there is more talk about fire safety and how to treat a broken leg rather than "Did you hear Scout Master Bob is gay?!' or "Company X refuses to donate to the Boy Scouts because of their stance on homosexuality."

I am not too sure how I feel about this legislation sufficeth me to say, if you state "I will NOT donate to the BSA because of their stance on XY and Z." I really don't see why you should be made to donate without discrimination.

In my 6 years as a Boy Scout in this country, I did not once hear the mention of homosexuality. I learned lifesaving, knot tying, survival skills, camping, etc. I love the Boy Scout program.

That being said, my first thought upon reading that was the same thought that Stephan expressed.
