Okay, yesterday in the RedEye, there was an article about this Brookers kid. She's 20 years old, from Massachussetts, and has been posting homemade videos to YouTube. And now she's been offered an 18 month contract by Carson Daly Productions.

They say this is the first case of an unknown getting discovered through YouTube.

I've watched some of her videos. Some of them actually made me giggle. Some of them made a good point, like the one about the news ("...and you will die.").

But there's something a little off-putting about her stuff. I'm not sure I can put my finger on it, but... maybe that it's too familiar. It's the kind of wisecracking that I do, or people I know do. I don't know, maybe it's time for that kind of thing to get into the limelight.

This is the article I read (I guess it was in the LA Times first).

Is this going to be a new fad? Are people like the "Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" guys and the guy who did "They're Sending the Hobbits to Isengard" going to wind up with contracts as well?

Good lord, they offered BROOKERS a contract?!

Eeeeechchhhhhhh.

I hope this isn't a fad. Then again, most TV is so amazingly awful that I don't think I'd notice if it does become one.

It doesn't surprise me. It's the same thinking that greenlighted most of the horrible, horrible shows and movies we've become accustomed to.

I'm actually kind of amused that you knew who she was. I'd never even heard of her.

Well, I enjoyed her My united states of...WHATEVA !!!

It's a good example of the faddish art of video lip-synching. And I wish I had some video editing software that kids like her use.

But overall, I echo the ewwwww!

This is what American entertainment has sunk to: instead of ending careers as it once did (Milli Vanilli, Ashlee Simpson, others), lip-synching is now celebrated with contracts jump-starting them.

I just spent I don't know how long watching Brookers videos. Interesting. I'd never heard of her either (but then again, I'd never heard of YouTube). I can see the appeal. But it's not what I want to watch on TV.

I like the whole microculture of fans and flamers that has mushroomed up in the comments to her videos.
