Cheap in the pejorative sense. Fanta is not the best soda on earth, even though it isn't the worst.

There are indeed expensive brands of soda. I don't know about the "masses" but sometimes there is a substantial taste difference -- depends on the flavor/style of soda actually.
My old favorite is Sarsparilla made by Sioux City soda company.
Sadly, I can no longer have their sodas because of sugar content, but back in the day, this was a real treat!
