Has anyone here donated large items to the Salvation Army in the past? Because I have some furniture and a whole bunch of housewares and stuff that I want to give to them, except that there is no way that I can fit a sofa into my Volkswagen. I just would feel really bad throwing all this stuff away, and for some reason, no one at the Salvation Army will answer the phone.

Is this normal, or have I just caught them at a bad time or something?

I tried to give them a car but they never got back to me.

Have you tried calling Goodwill?

I would try some local resale/charity organizations. They tend to be both more in need of donations and more receptive to helping you get those donations to them. [/$.02]

St. Vincent de Palma does pick ups. At least here they do.

I don't want to sell it, though, and I don't want freaky Internet people knowing where I live. Sorry KoM, you'll have to find some other way to stalk me. [Razz]

Given the number of Hatrackers you consort with...you lose. ^_^

Out here, the Salvation army has an 800 number just for setting up pick up times (It's different then the individual store numbers. You may want to check the yellow pages (or call information) for that number (I don't think the number I got was nation wide). The Goodwills in my area do not do pick ups anymore, but they may still do them where you live. The only reason I know this is because I just scheduled a pick-up for my old fridge.

When my parents split and we had to move, everything we wanted to get rid of but didn't want to throw away we put on the front lawn. Most of it was gone in less than twelve hours. This, of course, depends on where you live, what the weather is like, and whether or not you want people to see a sofa on your lawn.

But if you don't mind any of that, just put it on the curb with a sign that says "FREE!" and it should take care of itself.

I don't have a lawn. I have a condo. [Razz] And I can't get the couch out of the condo to begin with, much less down the stairs.

The Salvation Army isn't listed in our phone book...they had an 800 number on their website, but I called it, and it said Tampa. Maybe they redirected me because my cell has a Tampa area code. I dunno, should I just leave them a message anyway?

I'll check out Goodwill too, thanks. Bwar, I can't find my yellow pages. I was just going to look up "charities" and call a bunch today.

Um...then how did you get it in the condo in the first place? [Confused]

The woman who sold us the place left it here. And besides, I had help moving my things in (even though all I had to move was my television), and the other furniture I have (a bed and two tables) came in boxes, and the furniture men were nice enough to put the boxes in the bedroom for me because yeah, that was not happening.

The new couch that I'm getting is also coming in a box.

Ah...see, I pictured the couch sitting there as the construction team built the condo around it. [Wink] Now I understand.

I've moved furniture where I was convinced that was what happened. Since it didn't fit through the *&$@-ing door.
