Here's how it goes: From one Wikipedia article, using the links supplied in the main body* of that article, hop to a different article, preferably one as unrelated to the first article as possible. Please quote the sentence that your link appears in. Hopefully, we see how long it can go, how varied it can get, and learn something along the way!
*That means no external links, pictures, or references.
For example in the first sentence on the article on Beef there's a link to an article on Bovinae.
I thought I'd start it off with the article on OSC, in honor of our host.

I think it might be fun to try and go from one topic to another, sort of like a "six degrees of Kevin Bacon" sort of game.
Like go from Julius Caesar's entry to Orson Scott Card's in as short a link as you can.
Of course, never having tried it, it may not be very fun after all...
Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :
Okay, here's an example:
Orson Scott Card --> New Testament --> Greek Language --> Italy --> Rome --> Roman Kingdom --> Julius Caesar.
I'll bet there are shorter links though.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
From OSC, we hop over to Greensboro, NC.
Posted by Baron Samedi (Member # 9175) on :
OSC->New Testament->Epistle to the Romans->Ancient Rome->Julius Caesar
If you want a real challenge, go from Caesar to OSC.
Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :
Hmm...Actually, I like the idea of a goal, Xavier. What say we try to hit...oh..."Dinosaur" exactly on the tenth hop. Whoever gets that one gets to choose the next goal. Sound good?
So, OSC would be #1 and Greensboro #2
Posted by Demonstrocity (Member # 9579) on :

Posted by happymann (Member # 9559) on :
If we're trying to get to Dinosaur, couldn't #5 be History? Sentence: Oral history is considered by some historians to be an unreliable source for the study of history.
EDIT: to contain sentence as stated by Juxtapose

Wasn't easy.
Julius Caesar --> Masters of Rome --> Novel --> Literary genre --> Science Fiction --> Hugo Award --> Hugo Award for Best Novel --> Orson Scott Card
Can anyone do better?
Edit: I was able to get from Caesar to Mormonism pretty quickly, but went down several false leads trying to get to some sort of list of notable Mormons. I didn't find any.
Edit2: I think I will throw out another challenge, link Photophosphorylation to Ace Ventura. I'll try and resist the temptation to try and find my own link if someone gives me a different challenge
Oh and if you are annoyed that I am derailing your thread, I would gladly make a different one for these sorts of purposes.

Yikes! That is one crazy chain Baron. If I'd known it would be that cruel, I never would have assigned it .
I might sheepishly point out that the challenge was to connect Photophosphorylation, not simply Phosphorylation. I'll just go ahead and assume that you can get from the former to the latter in a couple of steps or less (though surprisingly it does not appear to be a direct link).
I'll probably try yours out now .
Edit: Wow, nice Demonstrocity.

Idaho Falls, Idaho-->laboratory-->centrifuge-->rotation around a fixed axis-->gyration-->gyroscope-->yo-yo
Posted by Baron Samedi (Member # 9175) on :
Nicely done. I've been working at that one like crazy, and haven't come up with a sufficiently elegant solution.
One thing, though. I thought we were only to use links in the main body of the article, and the "see also" section (where "gyration" was located) was off limits.
"...rotation around a fixed axis-->rotation-->gyroscope..." would solve that problem with no extra steps, though, so no harm done.
Nice work.
