I want one. An old one. A friend of mine has her ex-boyfriend's boyscout handbook. It seems to be one of the most useful things ever.
Plus I forgot what to do when a person gets shock.

What you really want is a Boy Scout Fieldbook. About half the handbook is taken up with BSA-specific stuff that you probably wouldn't be interested in.

That sounds fascinating and nessasary....

As I recall, keep them warm, elevate the feet, call for assistance - and from too many novels - give them hot sweet tea.

I feel sure you can get one on ebay. I would check but my distict firewall bans ebay. [Frown]

Cool
Maybe I'll start a collection.

You can access most of it online, as well - at usscouts.org. I have to print off things from there every once in awhile for scout leaders I know.

another link although this one is a bit more expensive and is out of stock in this store [Smile]

Still, it may be back in stock later, and it at least shows you what you are looking for. There is probably some store near where you live that carries scouting supplies, but I'm not sure how to go about finding it, sorry.

The fieldbook: http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?ctlg=05NDC&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=BOOKS_LIT&C3=BOYSCOUTS&C4=&LV=3&item=32067

For my tiny moment of glory, I helped with the design of that site. I didn't do the logo (I apologize for the drop shadow.) It's been up for less than a year, so it's still a bit of a work in progress.

What you really want is the Army infantry handbook. I remember learning many important things from my dad's copy when I was young, and it encompasses all aspects of outdoors survival (including a useful section on ambushes [Smile] )

But did it tell you about knots?

Posted by TheHumanTarget (Member # 7129) on :

Yes it did...but I think it was in the context of securing a prisoner...

That would be so useful in my life as an elementary school teacher.

At least link to the other thread so that this one doesn't go totally off track...

I can understand how it would. All joking aside, it was probably the most comprehensive survival guide I've ever seen. If you can think of something that would be useful to know, chances are it was contained in the book.

[ROFL]

Where would i get an Army Infantry book? That sounds utterly fascinating.
I also will need a survival knife. or at least a swiss army knife.

Don't go get a big survival knife as your first camp/field knife. A swiss army knife is a good choice. I really like my leatherman.

Check a local Army surplus store. They typically will have random field guides. Or, if you have a friend or family in the Armed Forces, then they could probably purchase whatever the equivalent is today.

Synesthesia,
If you really do want a scout field book, Shoot me an email and I will send you one of my old (last edition, not the current one) ones. It's probably newer than your boyfriend.
