Hatrack gift exchange

Katharina emailed me a few months ago asking me to run the hatrack gift exchange this year. Everyone who signs up will be giving and receiving a gift. It’s lots of fun, last year we had over 75 entries. I’m trying to get it going earlier this year so you have two weeks to sign up and extra time to pick out and purchase gifts.

Gifts: Please spend close to $10, absolutely no more than $20. Home made gifts and gifts that are local to your area are the most fun. There will be a thread where you can say what you want, or at least your favorite colors and things you can’t have. Last year I got gorgeous yarn from Coccinelle, the year before I got nut butters from Plaid.

November 13th: Deadline to sign up
To sign up please email hatrackfestivus@gmail.com with your mailing address, intent to participate, and special requests (only from your country, no college students, allergies). If you are a college student, include both addresses just in case, or just the home one if that’s what you want. If you have some special situation like you are leaving for a mission, or traveling most of the holiday, you can still participate, just let us all know.

November 17th: Everyone will receive an email with their match. Please reply to that email as soon as possible after you get it.

December 2nd: Mail gifts to college students (yes that will be listed in your info)

December 9th: All presents must be mailed. When you have mailed your present please email hatrackfestivus@gmail.com again.

When you receive your gift, please email once more letting us know that, then post in the “what I got thread” and reveal who it was. If you haven’t received a gift by December 24th email again and the hatrack angels will be notified.

In your emails, please include your Hatrack SN, because while I may be stalking you, I don't absolutely know your name.

With moving last year and all I got a bit sidetracked, and then I for got to put postage on my package (or something like that) and it got sent back to me.....TomD got his present, but really late.

I still use the key fob I got for my gift last year, every day.

Glad to see this back, it is a great idea. Count me in! I promise to remember the postage this time. [Big Grin]

I just want to let you know that while it's wonderful that you all are posting in the thread, it'd be more wonderful if you emailed. So far only two people who posted here have emailed. I'll take questions both on here and in email.

I would like to send gifts to two people, if it's possible: my gifter last year and my giftee, if he is still hatracking. And I don't necessarily need to get a present either. I'd just like to make amends for last year when a death in the fmaily and illness made life crazy, and I couldn't hold up my end of the bargain.

Thanks breyerchic (was it you?? where's my card . . .)

It wasn't me, I do have addresses for both of yours though, shoot me an email and I'll get those to you.

I'm signing up. Also, I got a letter from Zevvy, who will be back December 22. He wants to play, too. I'll send his address in Austrailia - maybe he could be paired up and notified early?

I was still a newbie the last time the gift exchange was running, so i was wondering about a couple of the details.

Is it OK for my giftee to know who is sending them the present, or is there some sort of secret component to it?

Okay, actually just the one detail.

It's secret until the gift arrives.

So, um, when are we going to start the "read about your giftee" likes/dislikes/allergies thread? Maybe some time between the 13th adn 17th?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I was planning on starting it on the 11th or 12th, so people could get their info on the list before the 17th. Yeah, I have a list in my notebook of what posts to make when, it's a bit obbsessed.

I even have checked the email address from last year, just to make sure no one had emailed it instead.

Weird thought, but i remember last year a few people got repeats from the year before -- do we want to try to avoid that this year? We could post in this thread who we had --- although keeping track of all of that might be sort of daunting...

ok

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

breyerchic made a spreadsheet last year of who had who, so she can make sure repeats don't happen. [Smile] Amazing. So organized. [Smile]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I've already made an index card of who partisipated last year, and both people they were associated with, when I draw names, those will not be chosen.

Good idea, breyerchic--I'm impressed!

It would be a much more haphazard affair if I were running it.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

You both realize I already have last years spreadsheet, so really there are only a few people I'm collecting info from [Wink] And I don't get too much from collecting this, just towns and names. It's much better just to read the what I want thread, which as promised will be up around the 11th.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Ok I have 38 entrants and eight people who have posted in this thread but not emailed. Keep them coming people. Wouldn't it be great to break last years record?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I e-mailed me, but not Zev because I forgot his letter again. I'll e-mail that tomorrow.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Does anyone want to volunteer to do Zevlag because his needs to go out earlier. I don't see a problem posting here because he won't see it until he gets back, but you could just email me if you do.

Posted by hansenj (Member # 4034) on :

I'm trying to see if it will fit in our tight (newlywed/student) budget...I really want to participate, but I don't know if I can convince my husband it's a worthwhile expense. [Wink] We'll see what happens. I want to join every year, but something always stops me. Maybe this will be the year it happens!

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Hopefully you can, lots of fun.

Posted by Theca (Member # 1629) on :

Wouldn't it be easier for Zevlag to get his when he gets back? There isn't a whole lot he can accept while he's down there except food, right? And a care package recieved his final two weeks seems a bit useless. But when he gets home he can have all sorts of material things he hasn't been allowed to touch for two years.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I didn't get the letter from Zevlag, but I'm sort of assuming he might have asked for it to be sent to Australia. I don't know, if not, and someone has an address for him in the US we could wait.

You could just make something, or bake something delicious, or something like that. I know I'd be really happy to get something home made, whether it was food or art or whathaveyou.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Dagnabbit, I forgot the letter again. [Frown] But yes, the address was in Utah, so he could open it on Christmas Day.

The early pairing is so he can send one from Australia in time. [Smile] So really, what he needs is a volunteer to get something from Australia. [Smile]

OOOh that's even easier. Who wants something from Australia?

No one is too new! Folks should just dive in! I think it's a really good way to get into the forum because for 6 weeks, those of us involved are all pretty active posters/checkers. It's so fun to see what everyone received/sent.

Posted by DaisyMae (Member # 9722) on :

Umm, can I be in it even though I'm not really part of the "in" crowd here yet? I don't want someone to be like, "I got DaisyMae? Who the crap is that?"

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

NO! You are NOT allowed to be in it! Under no circumstances whatsoever! Even if you sent a check worth a substantial amount of money (think lots of zeros) payable to "Dr Strangelove" to my address, which can be arranged to be provided to you.

In other words, tis ludicrous to refrain from playing on account of newbieness. What better way to get more integrated into the community?

DaisyMae, a lot of times the exchange serves to put somone on your radar that wasn't there before. Last year erosomniac was the person I got a gift from. I was aware of him prior to the exchange, but not nearly to the degree that I was afterward. Somehow getting the CDs from him cemented him in my mind to a greater degree than he previously had been.

^_^

This actually worked both ways; once I got Noemon's name, I went back and checked his recent posts and definitely recognize him as being an actual presence on the board as opposed to just another poster because of it.

That and, you know, 'cause he's cool.

I have almost 50 entries in so far,and they aren't due until the 13th. Much Fun, we're getting new people and old ones both. I'm a bit concerned that lots of people have posted here but not emailed. I know I've said that before so I'm probably getting really boring, but you aren't entered until I have your mailing address. And while I still have names from last year, I only have addresses in one hard copy in a folder, which isn't nearly as easy or fun to copy.

I have to say that I love this idea. I really enjoy reading the posts on what everyone gets each year. I wish I could join in, but due to my lifestyle I will have to continue playing vicariously. Just wanting to wish everyone lots of fun in picking and receiving gifts this year.

Sr. Kat

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

What about your lifestyle prevents it? (Serious question seeking enlightenment [Smile] )

Is there a problem with you receiving a gift? Or with the cost of giving one? If the latter, I voluteer to be your recipient. I think it would be really cool to get something very inexpensive but heartfelt and/or fun from a nun. Do you draw or write poetry or prose? Take photos? Do any kind of craft?

If the former, of course, I have no idea what I'd get for a nun, but that's what the other stickied thread is for.

But this totally isn't a pressure thing. Just think of it as concern from someone who'd hate to see you miss out unnecessarily. [Smile]

Posted by katdog42 (Member # 4773) on :

Giving a gift would be pretty easy for me. I have enough money in my personal budget to cover the cost of mailing something, if nobody minded stuff from our gift shop and some hand made crafts. I guess I've just always been nervous that no one would care much for nun gifts (as we call them around here).

Receiving gifts is the bigger issue for me, really. We can receive gifts, but gift giving is not a huge practice around here. I guess it's more my own reticence than anything.

I'll think about it this year.

Posted by cmc (Member # 9549) on :

Just an idea - but I saw something earlier about emailing if you hadn't rcvd your gift by a certain time and the 'hatrack elves' would be notified... What if you were one of them (if you didn't feel comfortable rcvg...)?

Like I said - just an idea, since it's my first time and I have no idea how this all works...

My aunt is a nun, and I always love to hear from her. [Smile]

She was (is, but retired) a Sister of Charity in Pittsburg, PA.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

CMC is right, for Katdog or anyone who doesn't feel the need to recieve, or anyone who is willing to send out a second gift, we do need a list of elves. These people will be asked to send out a gift if something goes wrong later. In the past three years, it seems there has been one or two a year that for some reason or another a gift didn't make it to someone, and an elf stepped in to help.

Posted by tmservo (Member # 8552) on :

I hope I didn't miss getting in on the gift exchange! Loved it last year, looking forward to doing it again!

No you didn't, just email hatrackfestivus@gmail.com by the 13th with your name and email address, then post in the other thread by the 16th.

Posted by katdog42 (Member # 4773) on :

I would certainly not mind being an elf, of course, with the understanding that whatever I send will likely be handmade (which I know is a plus anyway) or incredibly simple. If that's cool, count me in as an elf... should I send an e-mail?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Yes please send an email so I can reply to you easier when I'm panicked that a present hasn't been sent. Thanks so much KatDog.

Has anyone not gotten a reply? Yes entries are still open, but I'd like to see if I haven't emailed anyone back, because I think I have. If you haven't gotten a reply, send another email, and please post here.

Well, despite the fact that it's been a number of months since I was here with any regularity, I think this sounds rather fun, and a good way to get back on Hatrack a bit and get to know some of the people who've joined since I left. So if no one minds, I'm in.

Info has been emailed, breyer.

I have at this point replied to everyone who has emailed. If I haven't replied to you there's something wrong one way or another. I will email on Thursday (or friday if it gets too long) with your match.

I did not get an email. I just realized that the email listed in my profile is the one I use for spam and I never check it. I just changed it over to my real email. I have 2500+ emails in my spam account (I never go there) so could you maybe possibly resend the confirmation, pretty please? [Smile]

Actually I remember a while back some comment was made and some ridiculously early user with a remarkably low post count popped out of the woodwork.

If you want to be notified when your gift is shipped or should arrive, please post in this thread or email. I know many people (including myself) like the surprise of not knowing when our gift will arrive, so it shows up at the door. But it's also useful in case you'll be gone or need to let someone know to watch your door.

I have my present, just need to pack it up and send it out. I'm really happy with what I got my person. For the first year I think I got them something they'll really like.

Plus, I know someone who works in a store, who got me a discount on one of the things I wanted to buy, thus allowing me to buy more while staying under the $10 limit. :grins:

All I had left was the card. This evening, I stopped by the library on a whim, and while I was there I saw a sign for an art show, so I went on a whim, and got the perfect card. I was going to just pick something up at KMart, but this is so much better.

*bounces* This is probably way too much information, I'm just so excited!

(Me and our new mailperson are having issues. We are taking it to her boss tomorrow. Mainly, previously our mail box would last less than 6 months before being demolished on the road where we live. Nice mail lady came out and showed me where I could move it to that would be accessible to her, and safe. It was fine for 2 years. New mail lady says, "you can't have it there. My big jeep can't reach it." Worse, she didn't say that. She just stopped delivering mail. #@$@#$$#@!)

I posted this on the other thread but I wanted to give some people without a gift a little hope. I want to apologize to the person who was supposed to get a gift from me. I transposed the zip with another package (another secret santa from another message board on another site) and it was returned today. Neither of you got your gifts and are probably a little sad. Some of it was homemade goodies so I will remake them tonight and send it back out tomorrow. Again, I am so sorry!
