I actually did that for the science fair in high school, but with a needle instead of a hot dog. I went to state with it and won the book How To Draw A Straight Line.

That was the first experiment we did in undergrad lab class. With 200 throws each of ten needles. I think they were trying to discourage the slackers. Though at least we didn't have to count 2000 fruit flies like the poor biology undergrads.

I'd never heard of it before; I don't think they trusted us kids throwing anything hundreds of times.

Is this experiment rather common in classrooms?
