For guessing at something in the category "What" (from the Cranium game Hullabaloo):

Processed
Packaged
Potted
Pork
Protein
Product
Polynesian

What "thing" would you guess?

I haven't played hullabaloo. Are they all describing the same thing? Soy? Poi? Reminds me of the Dobie chain from hell.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Yes, words all beginning with the same letter to describe one thing.

Hullabaloo is a Cranium-family game that uses a colored die and set of cards to determine how you are supposed to get a particular idea across to another player. You can do it through drawing, descriptions of "bigger than X but smaller than Y," acting it out in gestures and non-word sounds, or (like above) a list of words that start with the same letter.

It isn't soy or poi. Hmmm. My husband just laughed when I finally told him the item and rested his head on the table, barely getting out between giggles "You just are really not very good at this, are you?"

*sigh

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Does it start with the same letter as all the clues? Are there any words you are not allowed to us? Is there a constraint on the number of clues?

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Pork?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Is it Tofu?

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

You can give as many clue words as you want, and the first letter is just whatever letter you think will give the best clues. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the first letter of the word.

You can't use any words that are actually in the title of the item itself. I was drawing a blank at the time, but looking back, I'd add "Python."

Thanks for trying, pooka!

pocky?

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

Ah, just read the last bit...

Hmmm.

Snake meat?

I have no idea. Potted is throwing me for a loop.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Not pork, tofu, or pocky, but now I remember that I used "Pork" as one of the clues.

"Processed Pork Protein Product. Processed Potted Pork Product. Polynesian. Packaged."

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

(I haven't played the game before, so I might not understand it entirely. Don't, therefore, take my inability to guess it as a sign that your clues are defective. [Smile] )

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Spam.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

"Potted" threw David for a loop, too. I was using it in the British sense. (I think. I hope.)

Posted by Zophar (Member # 10063) on :

Long pig? (not really appropriate for a children's game, but I'm stumped)
spam?
sweet and sour?

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

I knew quid would get it! [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Yep, "Spam."

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Yay!!!!!!

If I can get it in two guesses, and collectively, we can get it in under a dozen, then the clues are fine, methinks. [Smile]

Posted by Zophar (Member # 10063) on :

ha...timed out by someone else. potted worked for me, but then I live in Britain.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

(Zophar, too. [Smile] )

Thanks. Just checking to see if my clues were as awesome as I thought. Probably not, given the confusion.

Dang it. Husband was right again.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

So. Does this mean that it's my turn to throw up clues? [Razz]

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Yay!

Posted by Zophar (Member # 10063) on :

for info, what slowed me down was the clue Polynesian. So good clues, becasue I learned something! (about use of spam in polynesian food)
intersting game. [Smile]

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Spam is Polynesian?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

My initial reaction to the OP, before reading any of the responses, was "Spam!"

Maybe it's not you, CT. Maybe it's him. [Wink]

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

It's used in Hawaiian cuisine, and I've seen many recipes for Polynesian Spam (correctly named or not).

Posted by Zophar (Member # 10063) on :

Why "Python"?

oh. duh.

excellent clue!

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Cool, rivka.

I wish I had more to offer you all, but that was my only item with words. If anyone would like to continue, you are welcome to give clues for something else.

My ego is neither stroked nor crushed, only mildly redeemed. I can live with that.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

You know, I so totally suck at trying to think of clues, so I'll let someone else go if they want to.

Posted by Lupus (Member # 6516) on :

I was thinking spam as well...though the Polynesian and python threw me off

Speaking of which...do you have someone who you just rock those kind of games with? My mother and I are like that. No one else in my family will play with us if we are on the same team, because no matter how off the wall our clues are, we figure it out. My father says that we are using some sort of telepathic connections, and argues that that is cheating. [Smile]

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Or we can just let it go, here to last as a monument to Spam itself. [Wink]

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Just in case it wasn't clear, Monty Python had a famous Spam skit from their tv show and a bit on Spamalot their movie, Monty Python and the The Holy Grail.

It took me about 20 seconds of thinking to get "Spam." "Potted" along with "pork" is what did it for me.

Django Reinhardt?

(there are only about 5 or 6 guitarists I would call guitar geniuses, or at least 5 or 6 I'd consider historically at the top of the game. Of course, I'm not musically inclined, so that may limit me.)

Hendrix it is! You go, Flaming Toad on a Stick.

Why did you think it had to be a member of The Who, aspectre? (Hendrix had an album IIRC titled "Band of Gypsys.") I take it this may be a joke. [Smile]

Zophar, rivka is correct that the "all start with one letter of your chosing" part is a rule of Hullabaloo. I don't have a need to continue that if you want to modify the game, though.

I like the restriction, as it makes it harder for me. But -- eh -- I'm flexible. [Smile]
