I've been away for a few days and came back to find the front page cluttered with political threads. Ok, so not "cluttered", but there do appear to be more than normal. And it hit me that it is nearing that time when politics becomes the hot topic which everyone fights over.

In light of this, and inspired in part by Pix's thread, I'm thinking about starting a political party. I think I'm going to name it "Other". I know, inventive. I try, I really do. This party will have no platform, it will have no history, no agenda, nada. All it will have is a figurehead, a name to cast a vote for. The figurehead will have no opinions or stances. In fact, I'm considering having said figurehead not actually exist at all, just some odd name like Ogsfield Bistlexat. Or, if that fails, choose a name at random and not tell the person that I'm placing them at the head of my party. Anyways, I'm hoping that this party will attract disgruntled party members from both sides, and hopefully manage to appeal to the apathetic and lazy (such as myself). It's much easier to just mark "Other". I mean, I do it on questions that ask for race and religious preference and that kind of thing all the time anyways.

So what do y'all think? Who's with me?

Is this along the lines of the guy that created a long distance phone provider company called "I Don't Care, Inc."?

"What long distance company would you like to usefor your collect call?"

"Oh, I don't care..."

Miami to Atlanta for $10 a minute. Here ya go!

That's not funny.

I heard Florida is considering putting a space for "none of the above" on the ballots. That way, if you want to abstain from voting for a particular race, you can mark that and there won't be any confusion. Some of the politicians are worried about how many votes that space might get.

I liked what one local candidate called his party: "Party for Working Families". I had no idea what sort of political opinions this person had, but as I told my wife, "I felt a little bad voting against working families..." [Smile]

I can't remember who wrote the SF story along these lines. The Presidential candidate was called "The Candidate," and her identity was secret. She was surrounded by demographically representative supporters, and she had no platform, even after she was elected.

I say we elect George P. Burdell.

*waits to see if anyone gets the reference without looking it up*

He's far too old. The stress of the job might do him in for good.

There was a Lois & Clark episode like that. John Doe was elected by a landslide.

Unfortunately, he was a time-travelling sociopathic megalomaniac with a mind-control device, but what do you expect from a politician?

You could check out the Rhinoceros Party in Canada. [Smile] Started as a joke, but they kept getting elected...

I propose Ronald Reagans corpse be our party leader. He will have no opinions. No platform. And we get to have Lewis Black as our celebrity member.
