Just a note to say how pleased I am that Serena Williams beat that shrieking banshee Maria Sharapova in the Aussie tennis open. The racket (no pun intended) Sharapova makes is unbearable.

i completely agree!!! i really cant stand maria or her terrible yelling. im not really a big Williams fan, but i was that day b/c i really dislike maria.
on another note, i was down that roddick got beat so soundly by federer. tho if anyone is going to do it im glad it was him. i had my hopes up for roddick after making it to the finals against federer in the US open, and just recently beating him in an exhibition match.
and on the whole Federer / Nadal match up, im a big federer supporter. i really hope roger breaks pete's record of most grand slam winnings of 14.

I think it's pretty obvious that he will beat Pete, unless in the near future he has a huge injury or a complete meltdown. He's only 25, and winning the Aussie gives him what, 11 grand slams? He'll beat it and then set the bar much, much higher.
That being said, I'm not a fan of Federer. I like to watch him play, as he's no doubt an excellent player, but I hate to see anyone dominate so easily. I don't even make an effort to watch his matches. It's boring to watch him win every set. The best matches these days are between lower ranked players in the top 20. All of his victories have made Federer pretty smug as well, from what I've seen in his interviews.
I find it unfortunate that Nadal is his biggest competition, as I don't care for him either. I hate the way he walks around the court with that perpetual scowl, and his ridiculous notion that he can stare his opponents down.
On the women's side, I was hoping that Hingis or Clijsters would win. So all around it was a disappointing Aussie Open from my perspective.
Edit: My mistake, Roger has 10 grand slams now.

I haven't followed tennis in a few years, but by the numbers, Federer seems like the most dominating player in the history of the sport. Is he getting the respect he deserves?

Federer is most certainly getting the respect he deserves. And I don't think that's smugness that you see, Fitz. If you're consistently winning every tournament that you enter, it's more like matter-of-factness to point out that you're playing really really well. In fact, it would almost be more insulting to people to say that there are others just as good as you out there. Anyway, I don't like Serena Williams much, and I do like Sharapova, but if Serena's the best, she's the best, and I don't begrudge her that.

Yeah he is, almost to a fault. Tournaments these days have been reduced to a contest of who can make it to the final round, since everyone knows Roger is going to win the championship.
The guy is just an insanely good player. I think he actually runs a pretty serious risk of getting bored. Nadal can beat him on clay, so that's the one and only thing that's still a challenge for him.
I'd love to see some young gun climb up the rankings and challenge Federer, if only to make the tourney's more interesting. Everyone was hoping that Roddick could be that guy, but that's obviously not going to happen. Then some people were hoping for Nadal, but I myself can't stand that guy. I suppose he's young enough that he could still push for supremacy before Roger retires.
I think we should go back in time and bring back Pete Sampras at his prime. I think he'd probably lose 2/3 of their matches, but he'd at least win some.
