Did anyone see the movie?? SOOO different from the book. In my opinion, the book was way better - excessive SAT words and all...

I (barely) managed to read the entire book, never bothered with the sequel, and walked out of the movie about less than halfway through.

The movie was absolute garbage. The books' storyline is unoriginal enough to start with, and the movie managed to butcher even that

I don't know. Most of the people I talked to liked it. But that's because I live in Redneck central and am still in high school. Whoever the target audience was supposed to be, high school students (overall) seemed to like it ok.

I thought the book was pretty decent. Little bits here and there rankled me, and it's not a particularly original storyline, but I like the universe he's created, it's cool.
The movie, on the other hand, was wretched. It was also Star Wars 2.0. I watched the whole thing, but I couldn't stop laughing at how utterly ridiculous it was. At some points they literally lifted lines right from Star Wars. It made the book look stellar. Horrible, horrible movie, especially compared to what was in the book.
The sequel, btw, rips just as heavily from Star Wars. It's like a fantasy version of the sci-fi epic.

The book was garbage, trash, predictable and poorly written. It masked an unoriginal plot with lengthy uneeded descriptions.
The movie... I'd rather puke up a thousand hairballs then watch it again.
Why did I watch the movie after reading the book? Because I have (edit: had) faith in Humanity.

I agree that the movie was wretchedly, horribly, awfully, bad. I haven't read the book, but my friends who have said that it was much better than the movie.

haven't seen it. My brother did, with our cousin, and brother kept saying "Natalie Portman" when he got home. Upon questioning, he explained that Natalie Portman is hot and that should distract him from how utterly bad the movie was. It's a random brother thing - she's not in the movie.
But brother and cousin both liked the book well enough.

The complaint I have with this movie is the same complaint of all movie based on books. The movie was just cut too thin. It was stripped of the heart and soul of the story, and left with just a wisp of a shadow of the original.
You simply can expect to make a substantial movie when you have stripped all the substance out of it.
For the record, I really enjoy 'The Inheritance' series, and am very much looking forward to the final book in the series. I still say that most people who strongly object to the 'Eragon' books are just LotR fans chewing on sour grapes.
When I read the books, I got a real sense of time and place, and found the characters deep and likable.
Just passing it along.

The movie was dreadful. The book was meh. I listened to it and the sequel on CD. I would not have made it through a text version.
This Paolini just took Star Wars and added a dragon and a brother.

I liked the book and its sequel (the third is coming out this summer).
I want to find every single copy of the movie and place them in a hazardous waste dump. It is bad for your health.

Replace "dragon" with "the Force" and "brother" with "sister."
Murtagh was Leia, whatever the evil Dragon rider's name, I can't remember, was Vader. Brom was obi-wan, Dragon Riders are Jedi. The whole thing fits very snugly. He didn't add anything, he just edited it.

Never read the book, but the movie was awful. Aside from the uninspired plot, which others have already pointed out, I found the dialogue to be absolutely cringe-inducing. Skeletor made a more believable villain than the one in the movie. I shudder to remember it even now.

Yes, but Broms quite good at healing spells, and then he'd have a dragon. An agry, hostile, fire-breathing dragon intent on killing him.
OK on second though, maybe not the best idea to kill eragon, maybe just put him under the imperius curse, or cut out his tongue.

I'm not entirely positive, but I'm pretty sure. Along with the all the books the fifth Harry Potter movie is coming out, and Ocean's 13, and some more movies I can't remember. Between all the new books and movies and a trip to Iceland I'm going to have a very busy summer.

Define "standard fantasy story", please.
Fantasy runs the gamut from The Wizard of Oz to The Shining to The Lord of the Rings, with countless variations between...and even many examples that don't fall within the traditional parameters of fairy tale, paranormal, and heroic epic. What's "standard"?
