Barnes and Noble apparently got this one three weeks earlier than the advertised May 1st release date.

So, is Book Five of the Underland Chronicles a worthy conclusion to the series?

Well...I have mixed feelings.

One of my favorite characters in the entire series dies a gruesome, pointless death.

There's a third act "Everything you thought what black is actually WHITE, HA!" revelation that can't quite be reconciled with...well...the entire rest of the series. Still, it's left ambiguous enough that readers can draw their own conclusions on the twist.

It just doesn't feel like the concluding book. There's still so many things unresolved, still so many dangling plot threads...and poor Gregor is such a screwed up mess by the end of the book!

I can understand this is part of the authour's point...in real life there are no "happy endings", and few things are definitively resolved. Still, I would have appreciated a tad more closure.

That said, Collins still has a knack for note perfect characterization and involving action that kept me glued to the book all the way through.

I want there to be another book. I'm still puzzling out if her third act rug-pulling bit really works with the rest of the books. And man, am I upset over the major character death. [Cry]

It's definitely worth reading. Just need to decide if I liked it. [Wink]
