So. Manischewitz (the kosher food company) is having a Cook-Off, and Havah and I entered a recipe in it. The way they rig it, there are semi-finals in three places in the country, and Chicago is one of them. They've chosen 9 of the 10 semi-finalists for Chicago already, and they've chosen 10 more "almost semi-finalists", one of whom is going to be the 10th real semi-finalist (think "wild card").

We're one of those 10, and if we get enough votes, we could be the last semi-finalists in Chicago.

Anyway, if you go to http://www.manischewitz.com/, there's a big thing on a purple background that says, "We've received all the entries and are now judging the delicious recipes." And there's a button so that you can vote, starting Monday.

The actual vote will be at http://www.manischewitzpromotions.com/, but they'll tell you that when they e-mail you. They'll accept one vote per person per day from October 8 through October 15. So you know: "vote early, vote often". And tell all your friends to vote for us as well.

Our recipe is called Mushrooms Italiano. It's out of this world amazingly yummy, and should have been in the first 9 semi-finalists. In fact, they should have just cancelled the semi-finals and given us the grand prize. So help them make the right decision, please.

Lisa, are online voters expected to have tried the recipes at one of the cookoff locations (San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia) before voting?

Your links aren't working for me, but directly typing the address into the browser window did. In case anyone else has the same problem, I'm going to try to run them through TinyURL.

[Edited to add: No, I see the problem -- your links accidentaly included the trailing commas.]

Main Manischewitz website

Manischewitz Promotions (not up until Oct 5*** -- see Lisa's OP)

----

***Edited again to add: Lisa, the link for the reminder email suggests that the voting starts on October 5, not the 8th (although "date subject to change"). Any idea which?

The problems are the commas that got added at the ends of the urls.

Yeah, I just saw that and edited. But I think TinyURL will help AJ post links with parentheses in the URL on her cleaning thread. I'll go tackle that next.

No. The recipes will be on the site, I imagine. I can post ours here, though. The semi-finals aren't until November 8. Presumably, they want people to vote based on the posted recipes. Maybe they figure people will try them all.

Yeah... I just included the address, and the board interpreted the commas as part of them. I edited it so that the commas are excluded.

The site may not be up until the 5th, but voting doesn't start until the 8th. At least so it says in the rules.

Oh Lisa! Dear!

I want to vote for you but...

How can I vote for something with Mushrooms in it!?!?

Oh what a vexing dilemma!

Mushrooms Italiano
original recipe by Havah Hope and Lisa Liel

Mix Manischewitz® Matzo Meal with pizza spices in large plastic bag (doubled to prevent leaks). Heat oil in a fryer or large soup pot. While oil is heating, coat mushrooms in egg, and place in bag with matzo meal and spices. Shake bag vigorously to cover mushrooms. When all mushrooms are coated, and oil is heated to frying temperature, place mushrooms in oil and fry until slightly golden brown.

Mix ricotta cheese and Manischewitz® Original Marinara Sauce in a large mixing bowl. Gently fold in fried mushrooms. Pour into 9×13 lasagna pan. Top with shredded cheese (you can shake grated Romano and/or Parmesan on top to taste).

Bake at 350° F for 20-30 minutes until cheese is melted and slightly browned.

Serves 8 with healthy appetites.

I actually had to modify that a little, because they only allow 8 ingredients. And obviously you can use the pasta sauce of your choice; but using Manischewitz products is what you do in a Manischewitz cook-off. The note about not using cottonseed oil is because it's gross.

You may notice that this is nothing more than eggplant parmesan, but with mushrooms instead of eggplant. Our first Passover together, Havah was still a vegetarian, and she's allergic to eggplant. So our options were limited. But everyone who has ever had this has raved.

Tova won't eat mushrooms, but she gobbles this stuff. Just don't think about it. <grin>

Awesome. I will try yours, and I am certain I will rave about it.

The Pixiest, is it a matter of flavor or texture for you? For me it is flavor, and I've found a way to prepare the mushrooms so that I get the flavor without the (ahem) weird, rubbery, fungi texture.

Now, if the issue is flavor, then I suppose the recipe is right out. *grin

That looks yummy-- my only nitpick is, you didn't put package sizes on the cheese...

(I don't like mushrooms either-- except stuffed.)

CT: Mushrooms taste like poison to me =( The texture bugs me too, though.

There ARE some mushrooms I will eat. But only the ones that don't taste or feel like Mushrooms.

Lisa: Actually, the recipe sounds great except for the mushrooms. How about I pretend it's Zucchini and vote for you anyway?

(pssst -- make it with those "special" mushrooms, you know, the long green ones with the seeds in the middle. *wink wink, nudge nudge)

Valid point. I think we noticed that when we input this into their site. They're 8 oz packages.

Absolutely. After all, we adapted it from eggplant, right? And it may not matter, but the texture of the shrooms is nothing like mushrooms once they're fried like that.

You're eating the wrong ones then. Eat the ones that aren't poisonous... [Wink]

Good luck!

I'm an on-line semifinalist in the Philadelphia region. Please feel free to vote for me, too. My recipe is

Thai Chicken Soup with Red Curry Dumplings

Hope to see you in New York.

Hi, Felice. Do we know you by another name, or is this your first time posting here?

Welcome to Hatrack, if so. [Smile]

Are you willing to post your recipe here in advance, as Lisa did? I'd like the chance to make it before voting on it, and this weekend would be a great time to do it.

What a weird small world. Good luck. I hope to beat you in the finals in New York. <grin>

Some of the recipes on the site look wicked good. I mean, in Philly and SF, of course. Only ours looks any good in Chicago. And the ones that look good in the other places will look somewhat less good once we're at the finals in NY.

Vote early, vote often! It's Mushrooms Italiano, and it's under Havah's name in Chicago.
