Cheesy as the old show was, during the first season it sometimes had some interesting episodes. Mainly because actual SF writers like Larry Niven and D.C. Fontana were behind the scripts.

How can that be bad? The original show was a huge cheeseball. Might as well make it funny, it was unintentionally funny before.
Will Ferrell is a comic master. If this has good writing, it will be awesome.

Out of tribute to the slap-dash approach the Krofft brothers took to their shows?
In that case, they would be better served making a film version of Lidsville, or perhaps Lost Saucer.
I think the concept (and definitely some of those more serious, survival-oriented, genuine SF-writer -written first season scripts hinted at it) could be used to make a film that's entertaining in a non-ironic sense.

Perhaps this is where we disagree.
Universal should take it's cue from the recent hit Disney films Pirates of the Carribean (The first one) and National Treasure. Those show how to make family action films.
They don't need to be epics, but they should take themselves mildly seriously, but not too seriously.
In other words, a little restrained on the comedy, a bit big on the action, but not over the top on either.
Will Ferrell and restrained have never been in the same room together.
Look, nobody's favorite movie is a goofy send-up of the original material. It ticks off the loyal fans, the people who hated the original don't see it anyway, and that leaves the people who liked the original okay. They end up liking the send-up okay, too. But that is not the path to box office success--just an easy path to getting back the $$$ you put in to the movie (Which in the case of send-ups, usually isn't much anyway).
Anyway, the National Treasure/Pirates niche is exactly the one I'd like to see them slide this one into.

Obviously you didn't watch Stranger Than Fiction. He is capable of restraint. Of course, that film didn't make much money...his fan base only like zany gross-out Will.

I like online Will*. Some of it's hit or miss. But the hits are solid gold. It's mostly just him wandering around his or his friend's house staging skits and being a funny guy.
I like every movie I've seen him in. Or at least his role in it. Haven't seen Elf yet.

I didn't really get the ending to Stranger than Fiction. It felt...unsatisfying. Which I suppose was the point in a way, but it didn't leave me with any real closure. I like happy endings, I like sad endings, but I don't dig the lukewarm ending. Still, it's the only movie I've really enjoyed Will Ferrell in.
I liked the Land of the Lost that was on back in the 90s. I remember it having a lot to do with family, ingenuity, and the question of what seperates humans from animals. It would be nice if the movie touches on at least one of these ideas. If I don't expect a lot, I'll like it, right?
