I am setting up my old pentium II to run Slackware, The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table.

Currently downloading disc3 from their site and then I shall begin the installation, with my own Linux server I will be able to do stuff, really cool stuff.

Thought this was a spam whistle race there for a second.

(And wow, I didn't expect slackware to be a 3-disc install.)

Hey, can I host my game on your server?

Focus, padawan, on writing your chess software.

Ah sure King of Men but first you must answer this riddle:

How do I boot from a cd rom with a Pentium II?

Posted by Threads (Member # 10863) on :

That's a trick question [Smile] I think it depends on the motherboard not the processor.

okay scratch that i have found out how butit doesnt seem to recognize my linux boot disk.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

friggin hell it refuses to boot from the cdrom drive at all.

If you can't figure out how to install slack, you aren't ready to use slack.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

YAY! I chucked that computer found my sisters Pentium III and used that and it can boot from the cd.

I shall post soon.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Its not that i dont know how to install slack its that the P2 I found doesnt boot from the cd and ild need 4000 floppies.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Every second you spend on this project, Blayne, is a second you are not spending on your chess program.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Almost certainly you can get the P2 to boot from the CD.

However, if the P3 is already booting from CD, that works. Though I hope you aren't messing with your sister's computer without her permission.

Btw, while slack can be considered an 'advanced' Linux distribution, that doesn't mean it is better. It can be a good learning experience, but if you want learning that's more directly relevant to modern distributions, I'd start with debian, and if you want learning about the nuts and bolts of Linux, I'd start with gentoo (installing from source, naturally).

My OS is not inferior unless yours is too that offends me.

I cant work on the chess program right now, we have a system that when one person is working on the project only his changes matter, example yestderday was my day and as such my changes are the only ones commited, today is his day, tomorrow will be mine etc, with the exception being I worked on the in check logic while he debugged ValidPath, so right now I am working on my Hamming Code asignment while im waiting for the formatting to finish.

This is why establishing solid boundaries between parts of the code is important. It means you can work on them separately, at the same time.

*chortle* *sigh* That makes me laugh...(he said, knowing exactly how to get a Pentium 2 Computer, that never was capable of CD booting because that didn't really become a standard until the Pentium III, to install Linux off of a CD...) I'm just going to walk over here and feel smug for a while. Thanks, Blayne.

k seems like the hd on the p3 has a billion bad sectors so the isntall fails, i need to find a new harddrive it seems.

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

Nu, any luck on this? It would be great if you had a server to host my awesome 483 AUC game on. [Smile]

The current problem is that when i tried a newer harddrive it said "cannot access the disk" when i used cfdisk, so Im assuming putting in a random hardrive doesnt work with older mobo's, so when I get the chance Im popping the mobo battery and killing the bios password that someone put on.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

What does a BIOS password have to do with anything?

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

the BIOS doesnt recognize the harddrives I am trying to plug in, and the BIOS is password protected, so I need to kill its password to enable the BIOS to recognize the new hard drive.

Perhaps this is apt to the situation?

I use Windows 2000 [Wink] . Clearly, I am the best.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

how are my standards getting lower? my standard is still installing Linux, but I found programs on the way so its taking longer.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

How's your chess program going? I'd be panicky about it if I were in your situation.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

i can get a client-server stream going and send instructions I am just figuring out how to get it now to be the server switching messages between 2 clients now.
